Indiana Hoosier Football vs Virginia Tech....
I posted this below in a thread and curious what you guys think about our last 3 years under Coach Pry and Indiana Football.... My point being Indiana Hoosiers were bottom feeders. Much less talent and cup literally empty. They are winning and winning BIG year 1 with their new hire. We keep hearing rebuild and patience. YES, we are much better at a lot of things with Pry...recruiting, alumni relations etc. BUT, at the end of the day you are measuring on wins and losses....
All we have to do is look at the Indiana Hoosier football team. Check out their record the past 3 years, 2-10, 4-8, 3-9.. They hire JMU's Curt Cignetti and in his FIRST year they are 9-0 and playing great football. Don't pretend that this is a fluke or Virginia Tech was so much worse than Indiana football when Pry took over. They hired a proven head coach who won tough ballgames and made executive decisions on the field. I love Pry and his commitment to Tech, but do not kid ourselves.... the man is learning on the job and maybe, just maybe he is does not have what it takes to be a head football coach in P4. Great coordinator at PSU, but maybe not executive HC material. BTW, his mentor is a proven loser in big games too...PSU fans need to move on from Franklin if they ever want to sniff a NC again.

But there are lots of examples of flops. My question which nobody will answer is who are you replacing him with. There is no savior out there for programs that can’t buy a team. Keep in mind TCU had a great year, then what happened??

Indiana and never even thanked JMU for the opportunity. Kinda like Kenny Brooks when he left VT for KY. Totally classless

For the old geezers like me, the name pretty familiar.
His Dad was on Bobby Bowden’s staff at WVU before Bowden went to FSU. He succeeded Bowden as head coach. Was later fired.
They’re from that blue collar Pa area and father and sons been in football all their lives.
Good for him. Seemed like he did a good job at JMU, and definitely a name older Hokies recognize from days gone by.

Every single year, across all NCAA divisions, across all sports, there's dozens of new head coaches. If it were commonplace to be undefeated for the first 75% of your sports season the year after firing your coach, everyone would be firing their coach all the time. Why ever retain a coach who didn't start 9-0 in football, or 21-0 in basketball, just fire them and get the next coach to do it

a similar turnaround with a first year HC as what we are seeing with Indiana this year. Now those teams may not be undefeated, but I don't think fans care particularly if their team is already bowl eligible or competing for a conference championship.

millennium in college football. Not that there's things we can't learn from Cignetti.
Curt recruited players that were 3 and 4 year starters and had been putting in the work to be great players but weren't on winning teams. Not winning much any way.
Turns out it's easier to build a winning team when you get the players who were already putting in the work. As opposed to cherry picking the best statistical leader from the previous year who has a couple years of eligibility left.
I don't blame Pry for not being Cignetti or Deion Sanders. Do I think Cignetti would have worked at VT? Sure. Deion? Maybe. We're not exactly a 'Prime Time' media exploiting campus like Deion is. So maybe he would, maybe he wouldn't.
But Pry is definitely a fit for our culture and we did give our last 3 head coaches 6 years to turn it around. I think we should give Pry at least that long.
Also, Maybe not winning close games is just something Pry is going to have to deal with. For 20 years Beamer couldn't win a game that the other team took a 10 point or more lead on. Solution, don't get down by 10 points. So for Pry, always try to win by more than 8. Take risks earlier rather than later.

3 more years of pissing 4th quarter leads away. Most telling stat I have read the last 48 hours is that we are 8-0-1 with 2:00 to go in the game. Marve and Holt should be jobless, the notepad should be set on fire, and we need to hire an assistant titled Game Management Coach. What Pry did at end of halves at Miami and Cuse twice is inexcusable. He is getting flustered in crunch time!! End of first half this past weekend was ridiculous!! He is doing a great job in the portal and recruiting, but he manages the game like a youth football coach!

We didn’t win our first bowl game until 1986. Other than the Beamer years What sustained? success has VT football ever had?
Our biggest Problem moving forward is our athletic Director does not know football. Babcock is a baseball and basketball person.
We need a separate athletic Director to run the football operations.
We certainly could’ve hired the former JMU football coach.

4-8 year before he takes over and they were terrible.
Next year, he goes 11-2 and then he goes 14-1 the following year and then lost in National Championship.
Now at Alabama and he is doing very well as a coach there. Surrounded himself with good coaches and great GAME manager. UW isn't any bigger of a name in College Football than VT either.
My point is, it can be done quickly and it doesn't have to be a standout coach. Pry just ain't it.

3-5 years for a turnaround is over. Pry's biggest mistake as a rookie HC was hiring a bunch of interns as his senior staff. Elko hired a senior staff, Shane did the same at USC.
Do we really think Duke had more money for it's staff? Pry decided to pi$$ away the assistant coaches budget on his buddies
