I know nil about NIL. How much is potential NIL for a school and player
impacted by school location? Example: Tuscaloosa -Alabama -VS
Atlanta - Ga Tech
maybe there is a better example.Smaller city, Historically high ranking schoolvs huge city and average or good historical ranking

I thought that would make a big difference when NIL first started...
But then collectives were introduced, so it's a moot point. NIL is about fans donating. Mostly big donors, but crowd sourcing also plays a role. It's about pure, hard cash. Pay for play. It's not about endorsement opportunities in bigger markets.

Go figure, Ruiz (LifeWallet) is/was under Federal investigation. Spending & accounting practices. Can't say I'm surprised -- when people are stupid/silly with their money, I'm always waiting for the "But it wasn't really their money. Fraud, embezzlement, Ponzi scheme, etc."

Bryce Young, Caleb Williams, Caitlin Clark, all doing their national commercials for Dr Pepper or State Farm or whatever, they've leveraged their name image and or likeness, because they're good and they're recognizable. That's what NIL was supposed to be.
I don't think anyone ever intended it to be an unknown 18-year-old having a bag of cash thrown at him.

Boosters & local businessmen (and shoe companies!) have been sliding cash under-the-table for 100 years. The NIL decision simply allowed everybody to throw the cash in full-view. If anything, I'm a bit surprised some of the bigger boosters (Phil Knight, T. Boone Pickens) have been somewhat reserved.

like that, they didn't get filthy rich throwing their money away. And in most cases that's what's happening here, people are throwing their money away.
But yeah, Phil Knight could buy an Oregon the best team money could buy if he so chose to do it.
People like that want to be able to see what their money goes for, and that's where some of the over-the-top facilities come from, from people like that.

I agree with you about what "NIL" is (it's not actually NIL, its pay for play), but if you didn't see this coming you (not you specifically) weren't paying attention. This is the ONLY way this could have gone down. There's absolutely zero evidence that the NCAA either could or would try and "police" this thing and keep everyone in line.

It's the talking heads at ESPN, and the politicians, those are the ones that didn't see this coming, or didn't think it would turn into the Wild West that it already is.
This was a "hold my beer, watch this" moment for the NCAA. If everybody wants this, this is what we'll give them, with no rules or structure or oversight.
The NCAA got politicians off their back, and shut up the talking heads.

money that used to be directly donated to the school, now being donated to NIL collectives from the same pool of boosters.
Occasionally, an actual business may opt to advertise but that's probably more likely in smaller markets without professional sports franchises. I always think of car dealerships, local eateries, etc.

NIL funding comes through funding from boosters and from businesses interested in using athletes in events and advertising. Clearly bigger cities will have more money than more remote schools. But how active the donor base is important. Take Texas A&M. More remote then the university of Texas in Austin, but the Aggies are all in. But nobody knows the full data because NIL cooperatives aren’t publishing the spending

It's some kind of mathematical formula.
At one point they had our fifth-string walk-on QB with one of the highest NIL valuations on the team. They also had Mutts valued at less than I know our poster deal made for him. My advice is to completely ignore On3's NIL valuations. And when I say completely, I mean exactly that.
