VT is still under the radar…
Not listed in Bracketology for NCAA tournament. My expectations are making the tournament at a minimum. They only have 6 ACC teams making it…and we are not one of them. Are we just excited as “fans”…but not to levels of reality? BTW: I got season tickets, so I’m excited.

Why shouldn’t we be? Record last year? Go win games.

Yea the national media and VT fans have very different expectations
We will see who is right. ACC looks much improved.

the challenge for me as far as season expectations go is I can see what
we have added and how much better we can be than what we were, especially last season. But I don't follow basketball on the whole enough to compare our level of improvement to our opponents'. I am certainly optimistic and the goal for VT, as minimum, should be top half of the conference and an NCAA tournament berth. I think we will get there but there's a lot of bias in my thinking.

Yes, different coach but the expectations for football this yr was 8-9wins.

Do what???
8-9 wins for the football team??? I had them at 4-8 before the ODU fiasco. There was never any thought that, with the portal that Pry had, this team would approach .500 ** Edited by GoneFishin Hokie at 9/25/2025, 9:22:28 AM

Well we should be under the radar
Given the meager levels of production we are returning. Can't really expect the rest of the world to extrapolate the collective value of all the new pieces. Me, I am quite hopefully optimistic about our prospects but been around the block enough to realize NO ONE , including CMY and staff, can be positive about what we really got until we tip it off a few times. I am excited, but trying not to get over my skis too far too early.

Color me cautiously optimistic because in MY I trust.

I am too but to be objective
it is easy . Last season we turned the roster and based on thin air a lot of folks were optimistic in early fall. I know I was when Miller was still the projected PG. Even after he left I held my tongue still hoping. Then it was reported off record that Liberty had smoked us in a scrimmage. Okay , maybe we weren't playing our Dawgs much or whatever. It wasn't to watching us the first couple of games that the alarm went off that this was going to be a bad team. I get there is a lot more to like on paper this September then last and i am happy everyone seems stoked. But again it is on paper. I am going to temper my expectations a tad until I actually see the product. But I love the athleticism we should have. And yeah one can make a case this could be a real breakout season . Let's hope that is the case. We deserve it and frankly we need it.

FWIW...VT is Top 3 in ACC in production returning

% of last years production or absolute amount?

Im certain on percentage, but I think total production too
They didnt have a short bench last year, and not for the good reasons

Also not all the returning production will be starting
Also significant upgrade at the 5 and backup 5 this year. Starting 5 likely to be Avdalas, Bedford, Johnson, Lawal, Hansberry? Or does Hammond start next to Bedford Avdalas lawal hansberry? Either way likely 2 of the returners come off the bench. Shows how much VT grew this off season

Per press conference, CMY expects 2-3 of last yr's players to start this yr
My guesses at the 2-3 returning starters: 1. Lawal is for sure to start. 2. Schutt or Johnson will likely start at wing. 3. Hammond could maybe start at PG some games.

I think all of last years players, other than Lawal, come off the bench
this year.

Doesn't that say more about the turnover in the ACC?
Let's face it, the ACC blew chunks last season. The conference should be better across the board this season.

Regardless, VT should be given same recognition as any other 6 ACC teams
There isn't a school who had more production return that had a better offseason than VT

We'll have to earn our respect during the season.
But I agree with you 100%.

I stand corrected
I guess Lawai and Schutt account for a lot more than i suspected .....or every other ACC schools is churning its roster just as much. But my guess is folks that didn't wear a VT uniform last year will easily surpass those who did in every relevant statistical category which does make it difficult to really gauge VT , or practically any other ACC school . Lot easier to project the NBA, to state the obvious.

It may be a good thing that the team is under the radar. Some teams do
better in that role while the players are learning how to mesh with each other. I would be thrilled seeing VT make any tournament this year. In terms of building any momentum for next year's team, I do think it is sometimes better if a team is able to make a deep run in the NIT or one of the other tournaments than losing in the play-in game or 1st Round of the NCAAT.

Especially with the type of season VT had last year..
The additions they made are not really substantial enough for bracketologists to say that they are a tournament team, even if it is true, which imo it is. I'm sure plenty of bracket guys have them on the fringe and it wouldn't take much to move them into the projected field.
