Mike Young working magic again. I guess the key is Rechsteiner and if he
can keep improving and whether he can he have a scoring contribution against the tough teams on our schedule. MY had the rug pulled out from under him with the Hysier Miller departure - which seemed like VT basketball's usual tough luck.

Hammond had 19 minutes last night. Maybe because Rech wasn't hitting
I don't know, but a few more nights like last night and Hammond may be getting the bulk of the PG playing time.

To your point, this roster looks a bit limited with what could be a
crippling blow when your first option at guard leaves right before the season - like last year. I think VT is a difficult place for recruiting basketball players. The way to overcome it is with NIL money. I also suspect the MY's allocation isn't that great compared to peer schools. Yet his players seem to always improve. He has effective clock management and in-game strategy adjustments. Last year he beat much more talented teams such as Clemson and NC State that made the final 8 and 4, respectively. Might we have a bad season? Well, we are EXPECTED to. We are 15/18 teams in preseason rankings - and that was before Miller bailed. https://theacc.com/news/2024/10/15/duke-selected-as-prese...

Rech only 2 assists = not good
Pylons Pylons
0 TO's and +9 = good
Chris Coleman Chris Coleman
Well, part of that is the large number of 3s missed.
Tech was 2 of 16 from the outside in the first half.

It all depends on how the team handles physical play on the guards.
Just like the last few years, teams did the bumping and grinding all the way up the court on our ball handlers. It seemed to disrupt the rhythm of the offense. Rechsteiner is built a little stronger than Pedulla and Hammond seems to be a step quicker than our past guards so ... If they struggle, do we have any mismatches at other positions to exploit?

Hammond seems to have a lot of upside. Quicker than Rech.

MY gets a guy like Lawal that didn't contribute that much at VCU and now he
is an absolute force. Lynn Kidd got much better with Young's coaching. We just keep seeing it all the time. It makes you wonder what MY could have done in his tenure if he had some better pieces to work with. It sure would be nice to see him have more resources and it sure would be nice to see the rest of the athletic department use its resources with the excellence that Mike Young does. I've always said that if you gave Mike Young a solid guard and a bench guy from a team like FSU or some other team that has rangy athletes, he'd probably get in the tourney. Its so refreshing to see effective coaching and know-how on the sidelines rather than learning by doing and frantic fire drill routines. Mike Young is about as good a basketball coach as there is and really knows what he is doing.

Just think if we had given an extra 1 million NIL from football to MY
The football team would have still been mediocre while we could have had a much better MBB team

As I watched the women on Sunday and the men last night
I felt bad for both teams. The fact we defunded non football sports of nil to pay for this football team is sad.

Saw Lawal play in Florida tourney last year and I’m scratching my head at
how much more athletic VCU players were than ours.Told my wife I’d wish we had that guy and a couple other of their players. Don’t understand how a mid major can seemingly out talent an ACC school but that seemed to be the case

Lawal contributed quite a bit at VCU
They just had more depth and Lawal was younger and more raw than now. He’s doing similar stuff he did at VCU just playing more minutes

Anyone else think teams with throw a lot of cash at VT's players....
in the off season again? Me too. I see a lot of potential in these guys, and doubt I'm the only one...

Yes. We are a feeder school until we commit
To these programs instead of a losing football team. We are a developmental academy for better funded programs.

Lawal had cash thrown out him this past year. Thankful for the previous
relationship with JD. It’s early in the season so not sure about others. TJ is a beast on the boards and around the basket. His outside shot needs development and he forced a few things last night leading to 4 turnovers. These are things that will be cleaned up. Other than those 2 and maybe Schutt I’m not sure who else would be a high portal priority for power 5 programs.

1. Player development 2. Impeccable game management 3. Shoestring budget
compared to his ACC peers. I wish the talent and effectiveness of Mike Young was exhibited in football, but I sure haven't seen it yet.
