If you think ANY D1 coach is clean, I think you’re deluding yourself. I’m not piling on MY, I imagine he’s just like the rest of them. No better and no worse.

Given the crazy, conflicting, and often-changing rules and the highly competitive environment, most every D1 coach likely breaks the rules at times. I don't think it is fair to say that they are all the same in this regard. I think that some break the rules more often and in more significant ways than others. Speeding 5mph over the speed limit is breaking the rules, but it is not equivalent to going 50mph over. I have no inside knowledge about this issue, just commenting based on human nature.

With all of the change in the past few years, the rules are a moving target for sure.

First thing, I was never a boy scout and never considered myself better than anyone else. I just had parents (career Air Force dad) who pushed my brothers / sisters and me that doing the right thing is hard, but it's easier to live this way when difficult decisions are needed. There are many coaches who use NCAA rules as suggestions that they don't want to be caught doing. Crossing the line over little things is not problem in their view. But, I hope there are more than a few coaches lead the way they preach. I was a HS BB coach in Va late 80's ~ early 90's. I had my best team in all my years at this school 1990-91. One player on this team was a better student than BB player. He was re-taking Pre-Calculus that he got a D in previous year. His counselor recommended this for college transcripts. Second semester (Jan) started with him taking this class plus 2 others (block scheduling) and a study hall. The re-take didn't count as a class for VHSL eligibility purposes since he already passed it previously. So, he was only enrolled in 2 classes that fell under VHSL credit rules. He needed at least 3 classes. He was ineligible 2nd semester. Tough part, new counselor who took over for the other one due to having a baby, discovered this the last week of the season. Counselor said she could forget about it since it was so late in the season. I said no, let's figure out with AD and Principal what's next. We were 8-1 2nd semester, in 2nd place. He played in 4 of the wins because they were blowouts. We forfeited those 4 wins to drop us to 5th place out of 8 teams. Tournament time we lost in 2nd round of district tournament, season ends. I was surprised by a lot of reactions I got. Players (just about whole team) couldn't understand why we would just not tell VHSL. I got angry comments, in a team / parents meeting, from all but a couple of parents. I had other coaches at school who told me that I had more guts than they did. Luckily, we didn't have social media back then. Every team I had coached had a list of rules they and their parents signed. Rule #1 was always DO THE RIGHT THING. Following rules is part of the right thing, whether it seems fair or not.

i dont think CMY is calling the kid during the season. But I think every staff in America is probably sending indirect signals (through intermediaries of some kind) to kids that, hey if you ever decide to go in the portal , we'd be interested in a convo. Or maybe just as likely the kid through his intermediaries is sending bat signals to various schools. I certainly think a few kids on our squad mentally had one foot out the door over the second half of our past season. Well, which is it, Jon? Tampering or just part of the game in this era? They're not the same thing.

H can be upset that people broke the rules AND recognize this is simply the way things will be in the portal era.

"Just part of the game" implies it's common practice, everyone's doing it, and it's become routine. "Tampering" implies an illegal act (or, at a minimum, a violation of NCAA rules). But whatever. Scheyer can say whatever he wants. It just sounds like sour grapes.

Lots of things in all sorts of contexts are both against the rules and commonplace. Not at all contradictory.

run them off. Is that what he is upset about? Just look at the high school class, alone, that he had coming in. Somebody was going to be leaving.

He's got a big dog program, and its tough to sustain and retain.. even at Duke. He needs to put on his big boy pants, leave his feelings to himself, and just work harder to retain, compete and get better.

The portal and NIL are a nightmare

I seriously doubt either staff would be tampering, especially for more “lower” level type transfer - guys who were high recruits but didn’t produce on the college level as of yet. With that being said, I am absolutely sure both schutt and power along with the other Duke transfers likely received inquiries of some sort from various schools other than from VT & UVA. And of course, players talk to one another all year long. But no I seriously doubt Tony Bennett and Mike Young (and their staffs) were working the lines all year long.

another. The better ones know where they are going before they enter portal whether it be thru former teammates, friends, etc. they know that the coach wants them even thought he may not have personal contact with them. There is no way of policing these violations and I would bet they are rampant.
