I thought it took 8 and thatβs why
The magnificent 7 was trying to get one more. Is it really 3/4? That wonβt happen.

There isn't much to figure out, we are Poland before WW2.
And you know who Germany and the USSR are. Is there anything we can do? Not really.

The answer is always money, nothing else, so if thats the case
lets make money. I'll double the money for the 16 most worthy schools and only charge 1% of the increase for my consulting. Easy.

What happens when a league gets so big
that the top portion of the league knows they would have enough members for scheduling and for a TV deal at significantly more per school that they split off?
All you need is 9 or 10 to make it work, thats a full schedule and you actually play the members of your league, what a concept.

Could a loosely knit collection of independents work out
collective media deals, likely with variable money?.
FYI don't be surprised if the B12 moves to add more sooner rather than later, names being thrown around are Oregon St. and UCONN.

I'll play ball with those who like/want expansion with p12 scraps
For the sake of argument, I think there is a valid point that there is value in several of the remaining schools. I'm against it for many reasons, but this is about being for it. If we could land ND as full time in conjunction with adding some P12 I'd shift my position. Adding Stanford and Cal would probably help with the ND cause. Having a league with Stanford, Cal, UVA, Duke, others would end the academics debate (if it even matters), the B10 couldn't touch the new league with that collection of acamdemic power houses.
So lets say Stanford, Cal, Oregon, Wash, and Utah are added along with ND.
ACC West: Stanford Cal Oregon Wash Utah
ACC North: ND Louis Syracuse Pitt BC
ACC Mid Atlantic: UVA VT UNC Duke NCSt
ACC South: Clem FSU Miami GT Wake
There is PLENTY of pop in this league to compete with B10 and SEC all day long in every sport. But schools have to live up to their potential/name (FSU, Miami, VT). Oregon, Wash, Utah, ND add a ton of muscle.

The Colorado move is jolting
Because the topic write off as "silly season" or "only rumor" won't work now. This is real and has been for many years now. More to come.

Dial being turned up on B12 talking to P12 schools
4 corners again. No P12 deal in place yet? Seems like they are vulnerable.

Thats what I keep telling people who are complaining but watch/support
Watching keeps the train moving in the same direction.
I'm also wondering with all these massive TV deals when recession or maybe even depression will impact all the future obligations. What happens when advertising money dries up and these mega deals can't be funded? The mega deals were signed in an era of easy money over the last ~14 years that virtually all economists say is over and not coming back anytime soon.

It was the steady stream of rules changes
over the last 20 years. I really enjoyed it in the 80s and 90s and early 2000s. I still followed the standings prob until 2010 or so but didn't watch as closely. Was thinking around the time Johnson won his 5 in a row looked it up and the 5th was 2010, so yeah thats right.
Lucky dog, no race to the line, single file restart, constant screwing around with the points, the intervals they do now. Good tracks lost or limited to one race, just bad strategy. Back in those days a ticket to bristol was like a 25 year waiting list, now they can't fill up any tracks and have tarps filling up huge sections of seats. At every turn they doubled down on their changes instead of turning back.
If its good again I'll check out some races. Its just been awhile.

Agree, sports being ruined has freed up a ton of my time
I think the sequence of events for me in order of stopping was MLB, NASCAR (don't get me started on this one), NBA, NFL.............never was into hockey.
College athletics are pushing hard to make me stop. I already have cut way back, especially basketball. Barely even watched much of the tourny. Football is no longer an all day Saturday event for me. In a strange twist of fate, I like my situation now better.
Its still sad though.

Warned on this a few weeks ago. At that time it was 6
Some of you CORRECTLY said no way VT and UVA don't align here. Well, you were right. UVA has now made 7. One more to go.

it sounds like fsu/miami/clem/unc are the drivers but they
have swayed, it would seem, NC St and VT. The best way to poach two more is probably to find them landing spots? If the recent news the B10 not only wants oregon and wash but also stan and cal then it means the SEC would respond. That could be driving some of this along with the B12 apparently thinking there is more value in acc schools than what would be left of the p12.

Please don't shoot the messenger
Hearing six ACC schools are aligned to try and end the ACC:
Clem, FSU, Miami, UNC, NC State, and VT. If they get to 8 it would mean they could end it, terminating the GOR. Please note, it does NOT necessarily mean they would all land in the same spot. It just means they are aligned in trying to get out of the long term death trap.
Take it with a grain of salt but something is brewing.

Actually I kinda agree, and GT also needs to be examined
I think Clem, FSU along with securing VA and NC states should be priorities but was trying to get to 8, but 8 might be arbitrary. None of it may matter if any of them get a life raft somehow and say "see ya" to the rest. Yeah yeah yeah GOR I get it, the liferaft might come years down the road. Some have suggested that it would be feasible to pay up and get out closer to the expiration date. At some point between now and the end, that curve flips between cost and benefit (I don't claim to know when that point is).
A lot of noise about the Big going to 20 with 4 additional west coast teams, or 3 additional and ND. If the SEC matched and added Clem, FSU, VT, UNC.........even if that isn't likely just entertain me for a second, would that not be a cool league???

Was thinking similiar but
My idea was FSU/Miami/GT/Clem and 2 from NC and 2 from VA. 8 (a majority) supposedly (although everyone is a lawyer now so I'm sure I'll be told I'm wrong) can void the league and therefor the contracts/GOR. VA and NC are very important states because they represent zones where there is no SEC or B10 presence, so it would be wise for the current noisy kids in the corner (clem/fsu/miami) to court them. These 8 schools then try to merge forces with either the best of the B12, the best of the P12, or both and possibly ND. If you get the right mix of schools I think you can get a good contract. But big contracts don't come without eyeballs, you can be in whatever cities you want to be in, without eyeballs it won't matter. Thats why I've never bought the markets narrative in this whole thing, if that were true than BC, Syracuse, Chicago, and NYU would be worth more than Bama, ND, Michigan, and OSU. Come on, just stop. BRANDS BRANDS BRANDS = EYEBALLS EYEBALLS EYEBALLS = MONEY MONEY MONEY.

As much as I agree with the underlying notion that
the B10 is overrated ON THE FIELD that isn't what matters, and honestly the "markets" don't matter either. What matters is ratings whether you are a school in the middle of nowhere or a school in NYC if you draw RATINGS you are worth more ad money PERIOD. And the Big 10 draws ratings that are really impressive. A lot of those middling schools you listed draw much better ratings than you or I would expect (because they suck....) and have really large alumni bases and fan bases.

Problem is dollars are fungible
How do you prove in their spend if its money raised from other things like boosters or if its their share of revenue being spent? It doesn't really address the core issue anyways, the earners want more up front and they don't want to be told how or how much to spend. I don't want to micro manage P&Ls with a larger conference bureaucracyHow do you prove in their spend if its money raised from other things like boosters or if its their share of revenue being spent? It doesn't really address the core issue anyways, the earners want more up front and they don't want to be told how or how much to spend. I don't want to micro manage P&Ls with a larger conference beuracracy, I want equity in Revenue, true equity not 2022 equity = equal outcome (which it doesn't).

And it would work if the entire power 5 split evenly
But thats not the situation so the NFL is a horrible example.
Conference Realignment Board

I'd actually be for this if we got to 20 not 18
By adding 5 pacs and ND and moved to 4 regional 5 team pods:
West: Oreg, Wash, Cal, Stan, AZ
North: ND, Syracuse, BC, Pitt, Lou
East: UVA, VT, UNC, Duke, NCSt
South: WF, Clem, GT, Miami, FSU
This league would be competitive financially, academically, football, and basketball, olympic.

scraps than anything between the big12 and acc.

Very interesting confirms what brett mcmurphy
was posting a couple days ago. Lets say 1 or more additional go to B10 and these 4 go to B12, at that point does the P12 actually fold? Would WSU and Oreg St end up in something like the Mountain West?

But the point is that "less" payout is becoming
too much "less" so it won't be competitively sustainable. 35M to 50M can work, but 45M to 115M can't. The growth in the gap is at the heart of the issue and why the B12 P12 and ACC are dead or dying and we are evolving to a power 2 and the rest from a power 5 and the rest.
Conference Realignment Board

Show the BIG and SEC
are colluding in all of this and I bet some would get involved.
I don't really see what it has to do with the gov otherwise. Why would they get involved?
Conference Realignment Board
4 y ago
For the people insisting this will be two 32 team mega conferences
I see no way that happens. The CURRENT power 5 is around 64 or 65 teams. Why would the new entity that wants more money per school grow to the size of the current power 5 but repackaged as two leagues? Makes zero sense.
This is about trimming the fat and having a smaller, higher value per school, group or pair of leagues. I think this goes to 24 each TOPS maybe only 20.
Conference Realignment Board
4 y ago
you could finance all the fees and GOR impact
over 30 years and it would be a drop in the bucket each year compared to the incremental you'd get from the coming BIG and SEC deals. And even that may not be necessary, the lawyers can figure this stuff out and get reduced penalties. And if enough leave is there a case that the entity due the money does not even exist in a form similar enough to maintain the contract? All that plus what we really have evolving is an ESPN vs FOX situation, well the contract on both sides if you are talking ACC and SEC is ESPN.........they can figure it out.

Total hypothetical just to gauge mood
Here is scenario Iβm curious if youβd be happy or sad with this, suspend disbelief for this exercise:
SEC and Big each expand to 24 and split, they have 4 team conference playoffs each followed by. National championship game. The scraps of the current power 5 plus the group of 5 create their own playoff. Additions to Big 10 are: usc ucla ND Stanford cal Oregon wash UVa UNC and Duke (14+10=24). Additions to SEC are: Tex, OU, OkSt, Clem, FSU, Miami, GT, NCSt, VT, Louis (14+10=24).
Thatβs offered to you right now do you say yes?
Football Board
4 y ago
Ehhh I think itβs pretty clear the b10 is going all in
On west coast expansion. They will want to further solidify that and give usc and ucla more travel partners. I think the sec moves to solidify the south and penetrate the mid Atlantic (which technically is south historically), each league between 20 and 24 teams ND likely to b10. Youβd end up with conference playoffs for a conference champ and then a single game natty like a super bowl between the two leagues. The scraps along with the group of five form a D1 playoff thatβs separate.
If the sec wants to go Big Dick and really check mate they add vt ncst clem fsu and get to 20. Those 4 have the fan bases and potential to compete. You let the wine and cheese Publics along with the privates form a group of 5 level league to contend in new D1 playoff I already mentioned. Same goes with p12 and b12 scraps.

Fyi from a well connected p12 source
You will see 2 to 4 additional pac12 teams announced within 2 weeks for big 10. The most noise is actually NOT around oregon. Itβs cal. Cal had some power on the UC system board and could be an obstacle for ucla. However cal and Stanford appear to be most likely 2 additions (to usc and ucla). The next 2 are Oregon and Washington.
