Will we have fewer 19-year old seniors in future years so that they can go 5 years in college? Or will parents still hold kids back to increase their college scholarship odds even if it cost them a 5th year of college wrestling? Aside from wrestling, football is the other sport where this could impact parental decisions.
The other place the new rules will have an impact are sports with lots of international athletes, such as track and soccer. Track especially gets a lot of freshmen coming to the USA after age 20 and then competing against younger US college students.

They use September 1 as their cutoff as well. One year holdback whether in kindergarten or 8th grade and they would still be fine.

Bo, Melvin both turned 19 during senior year of HS before wrestling was over. Any worry there? I read Bo would be all good and Melvin may come early but haven't looked into if that's changed at all

Bo is good to go he's as old as you can be without being impacted. Melvin would be impacted and graduate early only if 5 for 5 passed. This is months back so the rule could've changed slightly which may change how it impacts our guys.

Not affected. They made the date Sept 1. Not start of classes. So unless they change the language, he will only have 4 years because he turned 19 before September 1 of last year. Unless I’m reading the language and his tweet wrong.

Bo's Birthday is August 25, 2026.
He will turn 20 on August 25, 2026.

Bo's birthday is before September 1, so he will be determined by the Age-based trigger.
A student-athlete's five-year eligibility period begins with the start of the regular academic year following the student-athlete's 19th birthday, if the student-athlete turns 19 years old before September 1st. Unless I am misreading the definition of 'the start of the regular academic year.'

My understanding is he is currently 18 and will turn 19 in October. The NCAA description of the rule is below. The 2027-2028 academic year at Virginia Tech would be in August 2027 and Melvin will still be 19. I don't see any reason that he needs to recertify and still receive his 5 years of eligibility.
"The Division I Cabinet's age-based model permits Division I student-athletes up to five years of eligibility if they enroll in college no later than the academic year after their 19th birthday. The new rule streamlines a significant portion of the Division I rule book by eliminating season-of-competition limits, sport-specific eligibility and redshirt rules, and eligibility extension waiver"

It's going to make a mess of scholarships if guys that have graduated get to come back.

Maybe my response was confusing. If Mendez or other graduated seniors get to opt into 5 for 5 and come back due to lawsuits, then Caleb redshirting last year will cost him a 5th year of competing. As it currently stands, those graduates don't get an extra year and Caleb isn't missing out on anything due to the redshirt.

Anyone that's already in college should have the option to opt in to either eligibility rules, and I think his medical has already been approved. It's incoming athletes that will automatically be on 5 for 5.
