U-17

Only other Hokie adjacent wrestlers I noticed was Kooper Deputy who was at a recent camp and Jaydin O'Farrill out of Bishop McCort. Deputy lost in the semis and is in the repechage and O'Farrill went down in his first match. I know it'll never happen but really wish international competition had a backside bracket. Travelling that far for an international tournament and only getting one match in has to hurt.

Great Question

The way the injury seemed to be referenced last season, it seemed that he would be out at least part of this year. I have no further knowledge of his status. I thought the recent photo of the entire team in the weight room included him so hopefully he is at least training/working out with the team over the summer.

Campbell

I don't see any way Campbell gets down to 125. He was a big 133. I'm hoping the coaches get Rozas in a position to take that 125 spot in '27-28. He had very little competition in Louisiana and still did well at national tournaments. Will be interesting to see how much he can improve with that much talent in the room. ** Edited by Hokie2000x at 7/30/2026, 8:13:30 AM

JD did end up moving Sasso on to the podium

Final predictions had 6 AA which is pretty incredible. I am very high on Nininger and Burton this year. Nininger looked fantastic at 74 kg at U-23 - with another fall semester to pack on mass, I can see him definitely big enough to still pull a typical cut to wrestle at 165 this year. His style already plays well with the mid-upper weights with his underhook game. Gaj's weight class at 157 is going to be really challenging and as good as he is, I think he is a natural 149. The 157 weight class is absolutely stacked. Making the podium is hard, really hard. I think our order of likely AA is: 133/141/149 - 95-100% 125 - 75% [EV is definitely top 8 if he can just bring his offense against high caliber opponents] 157/165/174/197 - 50% 184/285 - 30% [Jimmy really is a prototypical R12/R16 guy - beats up on lesser competition but really struggles to even keep matches close against top 10 guys] We've only had 6 AA once back in 2016. With this being the last hurrah for EV and Caleb, I think anything less than 6 will be a dissapointment looking at this roster.

Carini was the better wrestler

But he got loose at the end of the match and was out of position several times. All in all a great performance from him throughout the tournament His win against Dhabolt told me a lot more than his loss in the final.

Recruits

All of the recruits advanced with two wins with the exception of Fortier. He lost to a tough kid out of Maryland but not a great loss. We'll see what kind of damage he can do on the backside.

Thanks

Was dissapointed that Keegan and Staples are not registered but good info on Dube and Wurster. I like Wurster also - love to see kids come through with greco backgrounds that can integrate throws and upper body work into folkstyle. Fingers crossed we can get him in class of 2028. I think Campbell is the only recruit we've had from Ohio recently??

Fargo

Looks we have the following recruits wrestling at Fargo later this week: Coluccio - 113 - New Jersey McMullen - 132 - Pennsylvania Miller - 165 - Pennsylvania Carini - 175 - California Fortier - 175 - West Virginia Konopka - 215 - Connecticut Anyone available of any other wrestlers/recruits tied to the Tech program registered to wrestle at the meet?

Carini

I agree on Carini - very high on him. He won that match against Jeter in the U-20 semis recently but has just gotten better year over year. I like Konopka too but competing at 215/97 in high school is a disadvantage to him to be an immediate impact at Heavy. Hopefully he can gain enough strength/mass in Jimmy's senior year. I'd say the only weights we don't have blue chips either here or coming in are at 125 and 197.

125

I think 125 is the spot where I have the most questions after Eddie. I like Rozas and Coluccio but not sure I'd consider either a slam dunk at this point.

Kozac

Kozac just tweeted that VT informed him Bo is getting 5 years.

Great Point

Crazy enough classes started on August 25, 2025, literally Bo's 19th birthday. Good luck working this out NCAA.

I think you are reading his tweet correctly but I think his tweet is wrong. Bo's Birthday is August 25, 2026. He will turn 20 on August 25, 2026. Virginia Tech Fall 2026 Classes begin August 24, 2026. https://www.registrar.vt.edu/dates-deadlines/academic-cal... Bo's birthday is before September 1, so he will be determined by the Age-based trigger. A student-athlete's five-year eligibility period begins with the start of the regular academic year following the student-athlete's 19th birthday, if the student-athlete turns 19 years old before September 1st. Unless I am misreading the definition of 'the start of the regular academic year.'

Miller's Birthday is in October

My understanding is he is currently 18 and will turn 19 in October. The NCAA description of the rule is below. The 2027-2028 academic year at Virginia Tech would be in August 2027 and Melvin will still be 19. I don't see any reason that he needs to recertify and still receive his 5 years of eligibility. "The Division I Cabinet's age-based model permits Division I student-athletes up to five years of eligibility if they enroll in college no later than the academic year after their 19th birthday. The new rule streamlines a significant portion of the Division I rule book by eliminating season-of-competition limits, sport-specific eligibility and redshirt rules, and eligibility extension waiver"

Seidel

If you noticed, Seidel was actually wearing a Marstellar singlet early in the tournament. Don't believe he is affliliated with Tech in any way.

57 kg

I'd assume the summer is his break from a hard cut down to 125. @donjfs3 - Any update if Gage Wright is still in the room? I see that he hasn't transferred in the portal yet. I know grades can create more obstacles to getting transfers approved, curious if he could be in the mix next year at the upper weights.

Understand This

But the reality is he goes to that strategy when he doesn't need to. He can create good offense on his own and is very solid on top. There is a time and place to go to the funk and scramble game and I don't think he picks and chooses the way he should.

100%

Same issues we just saw in freestyle impacts him in folkstyle. He gets buried under his opponents when shooting. His upper body game and getting in tight on chest wraps and underhooks is where he is best.

Sonny

Sonny has a pretty good high crotch himself if he could avoid giving up his own legs several times a match.

Wrestle Offs

I understand the need for wrestle offs but they are limited in value. Consistent results on the mat vs. wrestlers of all type are better predictors of success.

Sergio

I honestly think Sergio has a good chance to grab the 184 spot. His biggest issue last year was gassing out in the 3rd, presumably from the cut? We really need our 184 to give us an AA chance to carry through the lineup top to bottom.

Mullen Weight

Interestingly, Mullen weighed in at 116 kilos yesterday which is about 255 lbs. I know he has been working to add weight the past few off seasons. He still looks nimble and quick - just needs to match the power of the top guys to be competitive. If he can get to Mirasola, he’ll have a 30+ lb weight advantage.

Ref

Ref put up another 2 points for Carini but was overruled at the table. Very close to winning 11-10 and honestly I think he should have.

Carini

Carini has a touch match coming up against Jeter but he may be the guy facing Burton tonight!

PIn!

Pin against a tough college wrestler. Nice win.

Incoming Classes

SI just published their latest high school rankings last night. 120 Lbs Killian Coluccio (27) - #6 126 Lbs Alex Rozas (26) - #15 132 Lbs Nicholas Garcia (26) - #5 144 Lbs Bo Bassett (26) - #1 157 Lbs Melvin Miller (27) - #1 175 Lbs Mario Carini (27) - #1 Max Fortier (27) - #9 180 Lbs Jonathan Rocha (26) - #6 Kyle Scott (26) - #13 215 Lbs Max Konopka (27) - #4 Unranked Blake Jacobson (26) [175 Lbs] Owen McMullan (26) [139 Lbs]

High School

Foard competed at 190 his senior year in high school. He had a pretty nice list of accolades: 2025 National Prep Champ - 190 lbs 2024 National Prep 3rd Place - 165 lbs Three-Time VISAA State Champion Top #4 190 recruit - Class of 2025 Matscouts #38 2025 Big Board Flo #49 2025 Big Board Looks like he cut weight for the first time this year at Wyoming and wrestled at 174 before taking his redshirt. He clearly has the frame to put on the weight to get up to 184. He is an absolute tank. I could see him coming in and being a difference maker right away. He gave Burton his toughest match at U-20s earlier this month. https://vawrestle.substack.com/p/vawrestle-episode-4-w-la...

Weight

Intermat has his projected weight at 157 - he competed at 150 lbs and 70 kg (154) last summer so you may be right at 157. 149 or 157 if he hasn't bulked up further.

Very Excited

Very excited to see Noah compete after being on the shelf since December. Should tell us a lot about how his added bulk will impact his wrestling. If you recall at National Duals, Gaj was who was asked to take one for the team by moving up from 149 to 157, not Noah. Will be really interesting.

Looks About Right

Another name you could throw into the mix for the backups after Bo & Gorman: Walker Turley (2026) - Two Time VISAA Champion (Private Virginia Schools) [144] - Injured this past season Not sure if Donovan Chavis was on the team this year at 141 but he doesn't appear to be on the team roster or in the transfer portal.

If Seeded per List

Our path would be #10 Missouri, #2 Ohio State, #3 Stanford, #1 Okie State. Would be amazing.

Love Gorman

Not sure where you put him, he is competing with Seidel & Bo at 141/149 for the forseeable future. Don't see a spot for Weader either and I love his style.

5 for 5 and Transfer Portal

Considering how quiet we have been in the Transfer Portal and the likelihood of the 5-for-5 eligibility rules coming into effect, I think it's more and more likely that Robie is looking to move Gaj and Noah up to get them into the lineup next year. Hard to even consider sitting Gaj after his All-American performance last year but 157 is a different animal and much deeper weight class. I went back and watched a few of Sergio's matches and I think he has the frame to successfully move up to 184 and have a better gas tank in the 3rd period vs. last year. Also, Campbell appears to be sticking around and invested in the program even after his injury so he will in be in contention for 2027-28. Bo mentioned in an interview on Flo this week that he sees himself as a permanent 141/65 kg ideal weight for his entire college career which was interesting. Seidel is most likely only going to be able to keep himself at 133 for one more year. Thoughts? 2026-2027 Projected Lineup 125 - Eddie V 133 - Seidel (one more year) 141 - Bo 149 - Hitman 157 - Gaj 165 - Noah 174 - Burton 184 - Sergio 197 - Sasso 285 - Big JIm 2027-2028 Projected Lineup 125 - Rozas/Coluccio 133 - Campbell/Garcia 141 - Seidel 149 - Bo 157 - Gaj/Noah/Melvin 165 - Gaj/Noah/Melvin 174 - Burton/Fortier/Carini 184 - Burton/Fortier/Carini 197 - Sasso/Rocha 285 - Big Jim/Rocha/Konopka ** Edited by Hokie2000x at 5/8/2026, 8:32:15 AM

Seidel v Cortez

Considering Seidel worked the younger Cortez over earlier this year at the F&M 15-0, I'll feel pretty good with him against E. Cortez in the best of 3 this year. He also beat E. Cortez in the quarters at the US Open last year in freestyle. Seidel already qualified into the U20 WTT at the end of May with his All American finish at NCAAs. Regardless if he beats Jax or the other big boys here, it will be a good practice run this month.

Protecting Athletes and the Schools

Maybe. You have a race to recruit these kids early because the other schools were doing it. But trying to project a kid wrestling at 126 in high school and he hits campus freshman year at 165 isn't realistic. With such a limited scholarship quantity, schools need to prioritize having kids at the proper weights and filling in the lineup. The shift to 5 for 5 is only going to increase that need as the recruits are not going to be as willing to sit out a year so the coaches can manipulate the lineup year to year. I think it should actually help the kids, let them focus on school and improving over their high school career and leave recruiting until the summer after junior year.

C/O 2028 Recruiting Rules

Current Rules Division 1 men’s wrestling NCAA recruiting rules: Any time: Athletes can receive recruiting materials from college coaches, such as camp brochures, nonathletic institutional publications and NCAA educational materials published by the NCAA. June 15 after sophomore year: Coaches can make calls and send athletes all forms of private electronic correspondence, including text messages, instant messages, direct messages and emails, as well as all recruiting materials. Coaches can also call athletes at this point. August 1 before junior year: Athletes can begin taking unofficial visits and official visits to schools. August 1 before junior year: The NCAA recruiting rules allow coaches to conduct off-campus contact with athletes at their residence or school. Coaches can take seven recruiting opportunities (contacts and evaluations combined) per recruit starting August 1 before junior year. Beginning June 15 before the athlete’s junior year of high school, no more than three of the seven opportunities may be contacts each year. Proposed Rules (Not Yet Adopted) April 1st during Junior Year: Coaches can make calls and send athletes all forms of private electronic correspondence, including text messages, instant messages, direct messages and emails, as well as all recruiting materials. Coaches can also call athletes at this point. June 15 during/after junior year: The NCAA recruiting rules allow coaches to conduct off-campus contact with athletes at their residence or school. August 15 before/during senior year: Athletes can begin taking official visits to schools.

James Green

James Green addition to the coaching staff announced on Social Media. https://www.instagram.com/p/DX7OFZHEZV1/

Staff

All signs have pointed to Green & Walz. Green did already announce his departure from Nebraska but indicated he would stay in Lincoln to train through WTT. Why announce leaving the Nebraska staff this early if he was sticking around town to train? Seems like it is preferable from a recruiting standpoint to avoid any ambiguity on who the coaching staff will be in '27 and beyond as early as possible.

Coaching News?

Hopefully we get some official coaching staff news??

Carini

As NYC2000 mentions, Carini won't be here until 2028. That being said, he is a candidate to be a Day 1 starter at 174/184 depending on how big he gets. Fortier, Carini, Konopka - we have some really good big weight recruits coming in 2028. Konopka is a tweener, he'll need to put on some weight to compete at HW and probably too big for 197.

Shot Twice on Pantaleo

He had two shots, one successful on Pantaleo last night. Most of his points were scored on a leg lace and turns. Ridge has looked really solid, I think this will be a more fun match to watch than NCAA finals last year from an action standpoint.

US Open Updates

Senior Men's Freestyle 65 kg - Bo Bassett - #6 Seed - 4-0 Record; Wrestling in Finals tonight vs. #1 McKenna 70 kg - Melvin Miller - #7 Seed - 3-1 Record [Loss to Caleb]; Wrestling in Conso-Quarters today vs. #6 Ed Scott 70 kg - Caleb Henson - #2 Seed - 4-0 Record; Wrestling in Finals vs. #5 Lovett 70 kg - Drew Gorman - Unseeded - 3-2 Record [Losses to Bo, #5 Hardy] 74 kg - Bryce Andonian - #8 Seed - 4-2 Record [Losses to #11 Webster, #1 Carr] 74 kg - James Green - #5 Seed - 4-0 Record; Wrestling in Finals tonight vs. #11 Webster 86 kg - Mekhi Lewis - #5 Seed - 3-1 Record [Loss to #3 Welsh]; Wrestling in Conso-Quarters today vs. #8 Rogers 97 kg - Sonny Sasso - #8 Seed - 1-2 Record [Losses to #1 Buchanan, UR Malczewski] 125 kg - Jimmy Mullen - #10 Seed - 4-1 Record [2 Wins by Forfeit, Loss to #6 Wood]; Wrestling today in Conso-Quarters vs. #9 Hopke My Take - All the losses were basically expected and chalk with one exception. Sonny's loss to Malczewski was not pretty. The match was not as close as the score would indicate and he ran out of gas at the end, giving up the late takedown. Webster was underseeded at 74 kg so the loss by Bryce was not surprising. Bo and Caleb look great and James Green is a force, would absolutely love to have that stud in the room in a day to day basis. Looking forward to seeing the young guns below on the mat today!! U20 Men's Freestyle 57 kg - Alex Rozas 61 kg - Owen McMullen 65 kg - Bo Bassett 65 kg - Aaron Seidel [SCRATCHED] 70 kg - Melvin Miller 74 kg - Blake Jacobson 79 kg - Ryan Burton 79 kg - Mario Carini 97 kg - Max Konopka U17 Men's Freestyle 55 kg - Keegan Bassett

Seidel

Seidel not listed on the Hokie participants on social media. He may not be wrestling at the Open unfortunately.
