I really think Whit should reach out to the Tennessee coach. She was a
really good coach and the logical Tennessee fans recognized that. The ones who wanted her gone were living in the Pat Summit days. She may say no but it cannot hurt to put some feelers out.

Rice coach this week.

If we get her, we will lose all our players and drop like a rock I think
Players will see this as a step backwards, as in "what can she teach me?" Unlike KB, she does not have years of successful coaching behind her. That won't attract high level players. I don't think she will have much talent from Rice to bring over. We may get some decent mediocre players off the portal. We will be down in the bottom 3rd of the conference and will stay there for *at least* a few years. She may be able to recruit and if so perhaps over time things will slowly improve. But hey - won't cost VT too much, and more $$ can go to football.

I am going to bet you have little to no idea
Who is considered a rising star in the ranks of wbb. Can we let the people who are actually invested and knowledgeable work this through and quit with the keyboard histrionics.

Harsh, why should we listen to you?

We are not going to get the upper tier candidates. Plus, can't afford them.
H
Hokie_Forester OP
We were going to pay Kenny over a million.
Now I don't think we should pay Harper that but I disagree that we cannot afford a coach that was just fired.

She is a very good coach and no we want slide into an abyss backwards
Some of you need to take a step back from the cliff you seem to be leaning over:)

what is your evidence she is a very good coach?
H

Her past History and talking with people who are connected with WBB..
But please carry on with your tirade ...PS we are going to lose majority of players Brooks want regardless of our hire .. ** Edited by Hokie83 at 4/2/2024, 7:33:18 PM

83, do you know what Edmonds is currently making under contract at Rice?
Have you heard whether she's been on campus this week? Thanks.

THank for for your permission. My tirade probably is not yet over.

No coach would prevent girls wanting to stay with KB at KY if invited.

Should be though.....

OK, that was funny :)

I don't dislike that hire but I'd prefer Harper.
hokie77 hokie77
IMO, Harper will get offers from schools closer to what she was making @ Tn
Not named VT. She would really have to like us to come here at our max available pay. ** Edited by hokie77 at 4/2/2024, 8:04:31 PM

She'll be asking for at least $1 million / year...
With the focus on football, Whit is probably looking to pay no more than $500,000 - $750,000 per year, most likely closer to the half a million mark. Maybe that's one reason his search is taking longer than we all want.

If you look at Kellie Harper's coaching history (i.e. Western Carolina,
NC State, Missouri State, Tennessee), then why do you think she will ask for $1 million? Missouri State signed her "to a five-year contract paying $145,000 in annual base salary, plus $60,000 for radio and television shows. The contract also includes performance incentives." https://www.local3news.com/kellie-harper-hired-by-missour... Then when Tennessee hired her, she "received a five-year deal worth $750,000 annually." https://www.knoxnews.com/story/sports/college/university-... If history is any indication, then she could end up at another mid-major school. Or she could end up at a school like VT making somewhere between $500,000 and $750,000 with performance incentives which would be similar to her Missouri State contract and probably her Western Carolina contract.

I don't think she's getting a $1 million/year anywhere.
She was let go from a big job which usually means you are headed to a mid major program to revive your career. Coming to Tech isn't as glorious as Tennessee but it's well above a mid major school.

Plus she has buyout money in the bank

She's been fired twice. I think zero chance she would get a top 10 salary.
She didn't do well at NC State. Her resume says she's a good mid major coach.
H
Hokie_Forester OP
She took Tennessee to 4 straight tournaments, making the sweet 16 twice.
I think she's better than a mid major coach. She was victim to being a coach where one of the greatest ever set the standard.
vatechcowpatty vatechcowpatty
Ok, but she shouldn't get a top 10 salary. No way we pay her more than
Brooks.
H
Hokie_Forester OP
I agree 100%. I'd be ok in the $750k range.
Old Line Hokie Old Line Hokie
She's been to the NCAA Tournament 9 times in her 20 years as coach...
Would've been 10 times if not for the Covid ending season. She'll use that post season success to get her million.
H
Hokie_Forester OP
Someone may but I just can't see it. A fired coach getting top 20 coach
money.
Old Line Hokie Old Line Hokie
Harper wouldn't have been fired at 341 of the 351 D-1 WBB schools...
with her postseason record. Tennessee wants someone to play for national championships, not Sweet 16's or even Elite 8's.

Did she have a highly rated recruiting class coming in?
As terrible as it feels to have our roster and recruits taken, Tennessee is one of the schools that I may not feel bad about doing the same to them.
