In the past, a loss like Vt had, or even a Clemson (but
less so), would have eliminated any chance of competing for a National Championship. Today, a conference championship is all that matters, as depth and maturity makes a team much different at the end of the season than from the biggening. FSU is all but eliminated from getting into the conference championship with two losses. From where I'm sitting, with no dog in the hunt, the conference championship game is wide open for the taking. VT's schedule with a win against either Miami or Clemson puts them right there. While BC and GT can no longer be considered automatics, if VT takes care of business against conference foes, they are right there to play into the playoffs. The at large all but slipped away, but really, how many times has the ACC, old PAC, or the B12 have ever received an at large? Just a note: FSU has one of the best defensive lines on paper, that money can buy. What a complete waste of money. I hope our respective teams come out of this as being a lot smarter with their NIL money than FSU.

Looks Like FSU Players Decided They Wanted Out of the ACC With the Fan Base
It just surfaced with the players failing to show up to play the ACC games. The ditch the ACC at all cost attitude of the FSU fan base echoing all across the internet may have had a lot to do with their attitude. Do the players read these message boards? I have heard the people that claim to be Razorback insiders over the years say the Hog players do read message boards. This does open up the ACC. With Clemson having a poor showing against Georgia, it looks like Miami is the early ACC powerhouse. Of course Georgia will make a lot of pretty good football teams look bad. However Virginia Tech has Clemson at home and goes to Miami. The road game to Miami looks like the big one. Virginia Tech winning both those games and just taking care of business with the weaker ACC gang would put Tech in the ACC Championship Game. Winning that ACCCG would put Tech in the new Playoff and Vandy would be long forgotten.

What's the O/U on number of years before they start taking away autobids?
College football is moving towards the have's and have not's faster than ever before and the powers that be aren't even hiding it anymore. We are headed towards a playoff with 6 SEC schools and 6 B10 schools. To me, it's not a question of if, but when. The other leagues will be hoping for minor bowls as their reward. The only thing separating the present setup from what I'm laying out here is a couple 73-3 playoff games where ratings plummet into the toilet by halftime.

maybe the Clumpson drubbing and two FSU losses tell us something...
when your program is very focused on things other than games, nothing good happens

Hopefully both lines will wear cleats instead of roller skates going fwrd.

ACC needs 2 bids. That can still easily happen

Would be surprised if the 7 at-large bids don't go ND and the P2.
Not just this year, but most years moving forward. And I said this before Clemson and FSU got off to the dismal starts that they have.

Yeah, almost no chance the ACC gets more than 1 this season.
I guess the Big XII could come up with a couple of decent teams.

What ever. I don't see that at all. A one loss ACC team losing
in ACC championship gets an at large. A two loss team does not. Same with the B12. I'm in a conference of misfits, and chances are, a team that has never been invited to the playoffs before, will get a bid. Maybe 2. So the heck what if a 2 loss team from the SEC gets a bid. Heck, even a 3 loss team. I couldn't be more excited for the B12 teams, it's going to be a fun year.

Who is stepping up at this point in the ACC? Miami looks pretty good.
GT looks good, but they'd have to win the conference. The rest are a bunch of 7-6 or 8-5 teams unless Clemson runs the table, but that UGA stomping won't go away. The only possibility I see is Clemson winning out and Miami going undefeated, and Clemson beats them in the ACCCG.

May as well not play the season then.
reestuart reestuart
Who said that? There's plenty to play for, but if you take a realistic
view, the ACC is a one bid conference this year.

There is a lot of season left, and 16 schools still playing.

I do admire the optimism, even though I love seeing FSU and Clemson
flounder. Any loss by either is a good loss in my book.

Most years the ACC should have 2 teams in the top 11

You have more faith than I do the in polls and selection committees.
Even the current AP poll is has the Top 10 as all B1G, SEC and ND. If that's the end result, then both the ACC and BigXII are single-bid conferences. FSU's snub last year is all we need to know about how the future would go if it comes down to an ACC team vs. a P2. ** Edited by Maroon Baboon at 9/4/2024, 11:26:27 AM

Thats the way it was set up to function.
The B12 and ACC will get their conference champion into the playoff, along with one G5 conference champ, but the at large slots are going to the P2, with the SEC normally getting at least one more into the playoff than the B1X. Generally speaking, the only way the ACC or B12 gets an "at large" second team into the playoff is if they have one loss in the conference championship game.

The message from the media will be
"All the at large slots aren't reserved for the P2 and here's why its good that all the at large slots are reserved for the P2, peasants."
B
Big12 guy OP
Is that any different then it has been in the past? Basically, the P2
got 50% of the playoff spots, add ND, and they got 75% of the playoff spots. The P2 took almost all of the brands and playoff contenders, and ND takes the 2nd team from the ACC or the B12 every year that they are a contender. As a % off playoff spots, The P2 and ND will always get 50% to 75% of the playoff spots, that is a give in. A 2 loss ACC and B12 school would never have been considered before, yet here we are, complaining that our conferences will not get a 2 loss team into the playoffs. A LOT of the at large invites the B12 will receive, will depend on their OOC schedule, as the SEC and Big 10 will get their SOS from conference play. Who and how you lose to will determine any at large consideration, and of course the polls. I find it interesting that Miami has a quality win in the swamp, not an easy place to win, but they are not considered a top 10 team. If they go undefeated in the regular season, and lose in the conference championship game, they will be included as an at large. 2 losses, and they will be on the outside, looking in. Almost exactly as it has been in the past. "It's not fair" is an emotion, and there will be no level playing field moving forward. No different than the history of college football.

Natty's were the benchmark in the past. The future bench mark will
be making the playoffs. In basketball, some raise banners for making the final four. The smaller conferences raise banners for making the tournament. My point is, making the playoffs is the new bar for a successful season, successful coach, and building the ever elusive brand.

Agreed, but I don't see a path between what we saw on the field against
Vandy and a ticket to the ACC championship game. If the players were green and needed some experience I could follow your argument. However, in my opinion, that loss against Vandy was 100% on the coaching staff. They are not going to "improve". If they are not motivated enough to plan and execute an effective game plan with 8 months to prepare, they have no prayer of meeting the slate that is coming. ** Edited by VT ChemE 1986 at 9/3/2024, 2:40:15 PM
