My very plugged in to FSU board and admin buddy says Aug 15 is..
The day FSu announces they are leaving the Acc and joining B10. Says they will play this year as an independent then a full B10 schedule in 25... Don't shoot the messenger on this one, this is a 40 year Seminole booster that usually sat in Presidents suite once a year until he decided he'd rather spend his fall weekends with his grandkids and friends on 30A in his house in Watercolor...he honestly doesn't really care anymore either way but said 2 very reliable sources have said the same thing. Final Details still being worked out on exit fee / dollar amount... That's all I gots

He said below they plan to play their ACC schedule as an independent
And not take any money for it. So the schedule stays, but ACC schools take FSU’s share. It’s pretty good money. How much?? What the guy said is basically akin to the ACC getting the same revenue but splitting the pie 13.3 ways instead of 14.3 (the 0.3 is ND) because FSU is playing their games but forfeiting their ACC revenue. (Remember, SMU, Cal and Stanford are basically getting nothing this year). So, if the ACC got $588M paid out last year (which divided by 14.3 equals $41.3M per school) and the ACCN adds revenue through addition of Dallas and Bay Area markets and states of CA and TX (Gotta be at least $10-12M), lets say that puts the ACC at $600M in revenue. Then there’s the CFP revenue that starts this year! The ACC gets 17% of 1.3B ($221M). Now Calford + SMU dip into this share, so thats now divided by 16 instead of 17 because FSU gives up that revenue as well. So, let’s compare the results per school…. (With FSU taking their share in parentheses) $600M divided by 13.3 = $45.1M (14.3 = $41.9) Then, CFP ACC distribution (17% of $1.3B) is $221M divided by 16 = $13.8M (17 = $13M) Total ACC distribution per school is $58.9M if FSU forfeits revenue ($54.9M if FSU doesn't) The average ACC school would see an increase in year over year revenue of about $17M when you’re staring down a $20M athlete pay scale added budget item. That’s not bad. And look…FSU is leaving ANYWAY. They’ve been saying this for a year. So this means the average ACC school sees an increase of $4M in revenue if FSU leaves in this fashion. And being as FSU is doing this whether we like it or not, I think a lot of schools might take that $4M over not taking $4M dollars. Plus they don’t have to deal with the headache of scheduling new games if they take FSU off their schedules.

I'm not buying it. To suggest that a couple of weeks before the season
Starts, they are going to declare that they're playing this season as an independent, makes no sense. They have games scheduled for ACC Network and ACC media contracts. To declare they are an independent, would create some chaos at that point. And probably further lawsuits. And would probably undermine negotiations for a financial settlement. That's just too short of notice to walk out of a conference. ** Edited by wwhokie1 at 7/12/2024, 11:18:59 PM

I'm skeptical as well but let's stop and realize for a minute this is FSU
Most of what they have done lately hasn't made much sense. They appear to still think they are late 90's early 2000's FSU and not the team that until the last year or two was mid to bottom of the ACC. I wouldn't try to follow the logic here. There may not be any.

Based on the decisions by the NC courts so far
It would have to be $400mm+. Don't see it.
H
hokieZ71
I could see it
Paying $400M as $45M per year over 10 years (to add interest) while FSU is getting $100M a year to play in the B1G (including CFP money) means FSU is $55M a year in the black and is already ahead of where they’d be in the ACC. If they’ve got commitment from donors to give up to $15M-$20M per year to get them closer to their B1G peers, then they are going to be competitive in a Power league. Where there’s a will there’s a way. ** Edited by hokieZ71 at 7/12/2024, 9:27:29 PM

Oregon and Washington are both on half shares for 7 years until the media
deal is up for renewal. B10 would probably require the same of FSU.
H
hokieZ71
Getting into Florida is big for Fox. Oregon and Wash, only half as big.
L

Sure, but FSU's cut would still have to come out of the existing deal.
A full share would mean ~$5M less per school until 2030?
H

If that’s the case, FSU ain’t going nowhere.
If they’re going somewhere, they’re not getting less money than they’re getting in the ACC.

Did he explain how they do an Independent schedule with others scheduled?
The only way I can conceive of an Independent Schedule happening two weeks after they pull out is that the ACC still plays them, but FSU gets no money for playing their schedule this year and cannot win a Conference Championship in anything. Even that seems far fetched, but I will say that if ESPN wants to make it happen, with some agreements for certain things with/from Fox, it can happen. However, I will have to see it to believe it.

They will play an Acc schedule..
As an independent and let the Acc keep the revenue as part of exit fee. That's what he's being told.. Like I said he really doesn't care, his 50 yrd k ine seats are part of the Doak renovation and when they tried to relocate him to the new end zone club , he pulled the plug on tickets and pretty much all his giving..no are to grind, that's just what he's being told from long time sources that he still maintains a relationship with.He doesn't care one way or another and thinks cfb is screwed and going in a direction he's not really interested in anymore
V
VPI_1998
OK - assuming this is true (and I am skeptical) it would be financial
suicide, even if the ACC teams FSU has scheduled to play agree to still play those games. BUT - schools are doing crazy things to chase $$$ so this really all that far fetched?
H
hokieZ71
Exactly, SMU is basically paying the ACC to give the ACC money.
And, yes, I meant to write it like that. FSU was mentioned a year ago to be exploring private equity options to assist in raising money. (Likely for exit fees) Their football revenue alone spiked $13M last year. They have a motivated donor base willing to step up that far exceeds anything VT can imagine. They’ve been embroiled in a lawsuit for months with the primary goal of reducing their exit penalty as much as possible. (When the number is $572M, every $10M, $100M you can chip away from that matters….) And then - on the side - they are renovating Doak Campbell with basically the cost of another ACC exit penalty. (Link below) But they’re able to secure a $327M bond for that. Because they’re Florida State, and they’re in Florida. It can’t be a shock to anybody that FSU is getting out of this league if you’ve been paying attention to anything over the last 12 months.

So if FSU goes undefeated as said independent, they are cool foregoing a
first round bye in the CFP? Sounds dumb.
V

Well - in a way I can't blame them. The CFP screwed them last year when
they went undefeated. The CFP is complete bu11sh!t and has been from the get-go. Maybe it will be better in it's expanded form but this committee selection process has been horrendous.

How can FSU play as an independent? All the ACC games in all sports...
are already set. So, FSU drops all the football games and has a 4-game football schedule as an independent? It seems like they would be an independent in 2025-2026 and then join the Big 19+ no earlier than the fall of 2026?

If FSU is Promised to the B1G Next Month
All the B1G schools will rally to help FSU fill a schedule out. Eighteen schools with open dates could easily oblige. I know all the SEC schools have open dates built into their scheduling. Sure the B1G does too. The SEC would help FSU too on scheduling if they went there.
O
ombandit
Why would they do that?
W
WarHog38
Because FSU Would Effectually Become a B1G Member Under the Terms OP Stated
L
LonghornHokie
You can only play 12 regular season games per year.
Are 9 current B10 schools going to drop existing non-conference games to accommodate FSU? What about the financial and legal fallout from that?
W
WarHog38
Who Says FSU Would need 9 B1G Schools to Provide a Game?
FSU would not be out to play a B1G schedule in 2024. FSU would just be out to fill a schedule that ACC schools refused to honor. Those ACC schools have contracts to play FSU as my understanding goes. Arkansas had contracts with SWC schools as I remember from long ago when SWC schools threatened just what many on this thread want the ACC to do to FSU. I think you need to check the financial & legal fallout of ACC schools not honoring those contracts. Back to filling that FSU 2024 schedule if ACC schools refuse. Some of those 9 games could be gotten from across the FCS. Those FCS schools are virtually always willing to bend over backwards to get a payday playing a FBS Major. I know Arkansas use to pay those FCS schools a cool $1 Million to grace Razorback Stadium for one game. I heard a few years ago that $2 Million was the new starting point for most of those FCS opponent games. Whatever, FSU could get a few B1G schools to bust those $2 Million contracts. As I said, the B1G schools would gladly do so. Especially if FSU footed those $2 Million per game price tags. $2 Million is nothing with a big stadium nearly full of people that bought $150 or $200 tickets. You think the FSU fans will not support FSU against Anybody next year if FSU ditches the ACC? They would pay to see FSU play William & Mary.
wwhokie1 wwhokie1
Yes, ACC schools have contracts to play FSU this season, but that is
because FSU is a member of the ACC. If FSU walks out of their contract with the ACC and declares independence 2 weeks before the season starts, then FSU is breaking that contract not the other schools. But none of that matters, there is no way FSU ends their association with the ACC 2 weeks before the season starts and declares they are independent this season.
W
WarHog38
Not Sure That FSU Leaving ACC Would Void A Contract Pertaining to Precise
scheduled games. This is not like the GOR debate. However I tend to wholly agree that FSU is not going to declare independence from the ACC on August 15, for the 2024 season. I think that is a least a year away and depends on what ESPN does on that TV Deal that expires on June 30, 2027. We are just still too far away from 2027.
wwhokie1 wwhokie1
The ACC schedules those games, not the particular school. Virginia Tech
Does not decide which ACC schools they play, that decision is made by the ACC. As a result, I assume FSU leaving the ACC would potentially impact those games. Something would have to be negotiated.
mrcaniac mrcaniac
The schools don't have a contract with FSU
Contracts for games are for out of conference games, not in conference. As a member of the ACC, the ACC provides 8 conference games for each conference member, and if FSU says they are no longer part of the conference, then those 8 games go bye bye. BTW, FSU has ripped out seats at Doak because they are doing renovations there, they most definitely cannot afford to pass out $20M+ to other schools when they will not be getting any TV, CFP, and NCAA money from the ACC. Schools with an $800M endowment don't have that kind of money to throw around.
W
WarHog38
Is That Perception or Absolute Fact?
I can remember things from long ago crystal clear. I would have about swore in 1990 to just what you stated, except not about the ACC, about the SWC. I found out Arkansas had Two-Game Home & Home Contracts with all Eight other SWC schools. They were rotated every year with Four being renewed every single year. It legally binds the two schools to play those games with each other. Just being a member of the ACC doesn't legally bind a school to play another ACC school, those contracts would do so. How are ACC schools otherwise legally binded to play each other?
VTHokie2000 VTHokie2000
Actually, per the NCAA DI bylaws it is possible to play a 13th regular
season game. 17.11.6.1 Maximum Limitations -- Institutional. [FBS/FCS] In bowl subdivision football, a member institution shall limit its total regular-season playing schedule with outside competition during the permissible football playing season in any one year to 12 contests (games or scrimmages), except as provided for member institutions located in Alaska and Hawaii, under Bylaw 17.31.2, and except as provided for all members under Bylaw 17.11.6.2. In championship subdivision football, a member institution shall limit its total regular-season playing schedule with outside competition during the permissible football playing season in any one year to 11 contests (games or scrimmages), except as provided for member institutions located in Alaska and Hawaii, under Bylaw 17.31.2, and except as provided for all members under Bylaw 17.11.6.2. Twelve football contests shall be permissible during those years in which there are 14 Saturdays from the first permissible playing date through the last playing date in November (e.g., 2024, 2025). (Revised: 1/12/99 effective 8/1/02, 8/5/99 effective 8/1/02, 4/28/05 effective 8/1/06, 12/15/06) 17.31.2 Alaska/Hawaii, Additional Football Contest. Member institutions located in Alaska and Hawaii shall be permitted to exceed, by one, the maximum number of football contests permitted under Bylaw 17.11.6.1 but otherwise shall conform to the same maximum number of contests and dates of competition permitted other members of the Association. FWIW Colorado has played 13 regular season games before with no bye week the year it played an OOC game at Hawai'i. I think there may be a few other schools who have taken advantage of these bylaws over the years.
mrcaniac mrcaniac
The 13 game is for the team going to Hawaii to have another home game
An extra home game will help setoff the travel costs to Hawaii.
VTHokie2000 VTHokie2000
Yes, that is how most schools use the bylaws, but I don't think it is a
requirement. My point was if the enough Big Ten schools were going to add FSU to their schedule this year, then the only scenario where that could work is enough Big Ten schools would have needed to have a game at Hawai'i already on the schedule so they could add FSU to the schedule on short notice. Now that also assumes Hawai'i is an Independent, which they probably should be anyways given their location. Plus, they might be the only school who should be able to play 12 home games every year. Hawai'i could enter into a business relationships with various organizations to sponsor each home game. It would bring in an infusion of cash for the athletic department's budget which I think is still sorely needed there.
