More talk on the 🏈 board about the B1G & SEC demanding 4 auto bids each.
This has even rattled Notre Dame, but certainly everyone else not in a P2 is rattled too. Word is that if they don’t get supported for the 4 auto playoff bids each, they will leave and do their own thing. However, if the others support this, they know they will get hammered on the recruiting trail, and that includes Notre Dame. B1G and SEC will say, we make more money, have better television exposure, have better access to the playoff and thus can not only pay you a better base salary, but the NIL money will be exponentially better. Is this checkmate for the P2? What do you think? Will schools that don’t want to join the P2 like ND and UNC have no choice, but to do it?

Why? it still leaves 4, 1 ACC, 1 B12, 1 G5 and 1 ND
Only thing it does is prevent a second ACC or B12 bid which is just laughable anyway because neither has done anything in the last 5 years to earn 1 much less 2.

4 of how many playoff spots?
Presume one spot is saved for a Group of 5 champion to fend off the antitrust plaintiffs. Is it four spots each of a 12-team playoff, 14-team playoff, or a 16-team playoff? The bigger the playoff is, the more four apiece is tolerable in light of the leverage of the parties.

Makes sense with pace podcast
He mentioned thaf p2 might want to imbed the playoffs into their conference championships - have divisions and semifinal for conferences as well as championship - fhey get their own money and cf championship funds so big 10 and sec get 8 of fhe sixteen and then next rounds for championships then sec and big 10 get automatic into nexf round. The other 8 is at large for the resf

Conference Championship could be the NYD Final Four, and Finals would be
SEC versus B1G every year. This is of course, assuming they were to break off and go on their own. Interesting way to do it.

Just heard this from Pace. however reading connecting the dots
ALl I see is those 2 are making the move, and unless you are in the Power 2, teams will be scrambling for 2-3 slots. and guess what, what choice, power 2 can also say we walk and create our own (and maybe leave the NCAA entirely). Not good......

Ok then they gotta leave for everything.
No NCAA tournament or particpation in non-revs.
S

I think they want that, especially the πŸ€ money for a tournament.
I’m guessing, but as Mark Felt said in Watergate, follow the money.

Off topic but what a letdown that Mark Felt's family sold his secret as
Deep Throat for chump change to Vanity Fair. Mark Felt actually sold it, but he was suffering from dementia, and the family likely pressured him to do it for the money.

I didn't know that, that is sad.

A basketball tournament of just the SEC and Big 10
is going to boring as hell. What makes the NCAA tourny great is the romance of the first weekend...crazy upsets draw you in, then you're invested in the sweet 16 and beyond. I'm starting to think college sports is being run by people who don't really like, eh, sports.
H

The SEC and Big 10 will invite other conferences to "their tourney".
The SEC and Big 10, backed by big money Fox and ESPN, will throw money at the minor conferences, and likely Big East, that it will be too hard to turn down. ACC and the Big 12 will be isolated and will have to cave. Sucks.

Yeah you’re probably right. Ooof, what a dumb time to be alive.

It's about the large state schools getting TV watchers, they have studied
the numbers, and the numbers rule. I am not saying I like it, but IMHO the train has left the station and the best we can do is adapt to the situation.

This is all headed exactly where.......
everyone thought it would go. The P2 want control of governance, power to control playoff access and the lion's share of the money. To achieve those goals they will share just enough control, access, and money to get the votes and what they want while fending off antitrust allegations, investigations and government involvement. Nobody knows what the final result will look like. There are too many constituencies involved and that is BEFORE what is likely federal and state government involvement at some point. I think there are likely to have already been and inevitably will be more miscalculations in pushback from stakeholders. I also believe the biggest miscalculation is that a scaled down upper division that essentially represents a minor league enterprise will retain or increase the sport's popularity(i.e., money) or that a break off will actually enjoy the benefits as an associate that they currently have in the present form. I am sad to see the sport upended and my hope is that the parties responsible go down as well.

It seems very silly to have 4 auto bids each...
If your conference is so great, why can't you just "earn it on the field"? Oh yeah, I guess that's not how college football works anymore (see FSU), but the SEC got their guaranteed 2 spots this year with Texas and Alabama anyway over FSU, so why require it contractually? Four teams each is simply too much and feels like a duopoly. Sure, an argument could be made that because of their new sizes they should get 2 teams each. Clearly on any given year 2 of the top 12 teams are going to be from a collection of Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, LSU, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn, Texas A&M, and if not then some team like South Carolina or Missouri is going to pop in. Clearly on any given year 2 of the top 12 teams are going to be from a collection of Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Washington, Oregon, USC... and if not then some team like Nebraska or Iowa is going to pop in. Hmmm.

If you don’t want an agreement, throw out something they wouldn’t agree to.
This way they can do their own thing, but say we tried and they turned us down. As I said in another post, I’m okay with more tier/divisions because more teams can win a 🏈 National Championship . Right now there are less than 10% that can win a National Championship in tier 1 🏈. It’s pretty much over for the 90+% before the season even starts. PS I really enjoyed watching JMU and Richmond win National Championships, and even William Mary make the Elite 8 a couple of years ago. I do have ties to all 3 schools, but nothing like I have to Virginia Tech.
HokieAl HokieAl
Funny you mention size. SEC and B12 will both be 16, ACC 17, BIG 18
the P2 is not any bigger than ACC and B12, but they want to have exponentially more teams. It's the same dynamic you will see in a couple weeks when the ACC gets half as many teams in the NCAA men's tournament compared to the BIG and SEC. And when we look at actual championships, in football it is the SEC and ACC who have won the most lately. In men's basketball it is the B12 and ACC who have had the success (along with Big East). The money often isn't going to the best on the field/court teams.

They are not done expanding.
S

Nope
J

In fairness, my message was clearly about "quality of size"...
That's why I listed the teams. We can get picky with semantics and lose the overall point, which is the SEC and Big10, with their recent expansions, are undeniably far deeper and of higher quality in football than the ACC or B12. Similarly, the ACC of B12 is far superior to the Sun Belt or AAC. I don't like the concept of auto-bids though, just to be clear.
HokieAl HokieAl
If they do, then so be it. We would end up with three levels
Based off of who is currently in the P2. and not sure where ND will fall in this. FBS D 1-A, Top tier P2 $$$ level with BIG and SEC competing for a national title (34 teams, 12 team playoff) FBS D 1-A, Second tier level with ACC and B12 (include the PAC, AAC, MTW, MAC, SUN, CUSA) competing for a national title (95 teams, ? playoff) FCS Third tier D1-AA competing for a national title (128 teams, 24 team playoff) and for comparison: NFL 32 teams, 14 team playoff ** Edited by HokieAl at 2/27/2024, 12:32:52 PM ** Edited by HokieAl at 2/27/2024, 1:18:48 PM

I’m okay with more tiers/divisions. More teams can win an NC. Right now it
is limited to a handful of teams. I am probably in the minority here, but if Virginia Tech gets in a P2, I think they can win a National Championship in 🏈. Look what happened when we joined Big East 🏈, then look what happened when we joined ACC 🏈. Frank will tell you in both cases we landed more talent than before. Then the retirement whispers about Frank and Fuente not really recruiting Virginia happened. Not to mention kids got smaller under Fuente, aka skinny legs! So if we move up, we will get way more money and better kids IMHO.

I feel like they are making these changes that will, ultimately, lead to
what they are trying to move away from.
S
Sunsetunderground
They are preparing for future expansion and Divisions
4 Divisions of 6 teams each. With 24 its gonna be hard to play everyone in your own conference or decide which 4 are most deserving unless you have Divisions and maybe a conference championship semi-final.
S
Stech OP
Actually the numbers work out well, w/ 6 you play 5 every year and do a
Cross over with another division for two years, that’s 11 games. Then you still have room for an OOC game, probably the first game of the season. Then you rotate to play another division after 2 years. In 6 years everyone in the Conference has played at least a home and away game with everyone. It’s way better than Virginia Tech playing Clemson and FSU every 6-7 years. The TV networks are trying to build schedules like the NFL, no weeks off with the sisters of the poor. They are trying to sell ads, subscriptions etc. They do that by having compelling matchups every week. By the way, they could keep the Conference Championship game, since you could have a Champion from the two Divisions that played each other. The numbers and matchups would work really well.
M
MrFantastic!
I think you got 48 right
if they do SEC could get scheduling right. VT, UVA,, UNC, State, Clemson and one other Mag 7. Also KU and OK State in the west.

matter of time for another great conference is broken up.

I guess its lucky there aren't any great conferences left.
