I couldn't care less. They paid their debt to society and I wouldn't hold it against them. In fact, you could almost say that they were ahead of their time. Kinda gangster even. And I sort of low key like that. I also have respect for someone trying to buy their way in. Stanford has the academic card. SMU has the money card. Which one is more important to the ACC right now? And WRT the death penalty at large, many other schools since then should have gotten it. UNC academic scandal? And SMU and UNC were nothing compared to the craven depravity of Ped State, who had a coach raping young boys in their locker room, then ignoring it. And when the crimes were finally exposed to the world, the "fans" just protested about the firing of Slobbering Joe Paterno. And there are tons of people who would want PSU in the ACC as if none of that didn't happen more recently than the SMU scandal. I'm not saying I would accept or turn down any of these teams, Stanford, SMU, Cal or even hypothetically Penn State. But I will say that I am not going to hold SMU's past against them.

SMU was sanctioned by The NCAA for recruiting violations. Not exactly a rare act, and one that is sometimes hard to avoid because boosters have ways of circumventing well-intentioned oversight. But during their probation period, they were caught again violating the recruiting standards. This was the misstep that earned them "death." Maybe the athletic department, the school administrators all tried to stay within the rules. But the boosters who make "strong recruiting" possible cared nothing about the rules, the sanctions, nor the consequences. It is now some SMU boosters who are making it possible for their school to join a conference without receiving any media money for seven years. What are the limits to which these boosters would go to ensure the success of SMU? About the Death Penalty. It may never be used again. When it was imposed on SMU it affected all of the programs that were on their schedule for the next couple of years and it harmed the other schools in their conference.

Not sure why people think it would bring the Texas market, much less the Dallas one. It’s another small private school and we have too many of them in the ACC already.

that may be okay but nobody cares about so you beg Ralph Lauren to brand it for you, and are willing to pay royalty dollars out the arse on all sales for seven years, in hopes that your RL branded cologne will mean something to people at the end of the period, and then you can start making money. RL looks at and thinks, well it may dilute our other sales (and our overall brand name) a bit but on whole we can distribute more to our shareholders by doing the deal- so what the hell.
