Thamel: Cal, Stanford, SMU under serious consideration by ACC (link).
From ESPN's Pete Thamel: "Sources: The potential additions of Cal, Stanford and SMU to the ACC are again under serious consideration by the ACC. A small group of ACC presidents met Wednesday morning to discuss financial models that would come with the additions.
Those models are are expected to include significant financial concessions from the school that will be added.
More meetings are expected this week. Just one vote is needed among the block of UNC, N.C. State, Clemson and FSU to get the three new schools in, assuming all the yes votes are in agreement with the financial arrangements. A realistic timeline for a decision is about one week.
There’s expected to be a pool of money created from these additions, and the ACC presidents are discussing how the money would be split. The mechanics of that are still to be worked out, including a performance pool for success initiatives.
The concessions expected from SMU include a willingness to take no broadcast media revenue for the first seven years they are in the league. Stanford and Cal would both receive the same share, which will both be reduced but different in form than SMU's concessions.

If there ever was an inclination to add west coast schools, then the ACC should have have jumped and added Stanford, Oregon, California & Washington. That would have given the conference a solid west coast presence and made scheduling easier. Instead the ACC twiddled its thumbs and let the BIG snatch the remaining gems of the PAC. Having said the above it wouldn't surprise me if the BIG told Washington & Oregon to keep their powder dry because an invitation would soon be forthcoming.

Create scheduling pods for all sports (or all but football depending on ND’s cooperation):
Pod 1 Miami, FSU, GT, Clemson, SMU
Pod 2 UNC, Duke, NC ST, Wake, UVA
Pod 3 VT, Pitt, BC, Syracuse, Louisville
Pod 4 Stanford, Cal, Ore St, Wash St, ND

And without them, expansion doesn’t happen. They keep saying they need one more vote, but that may not even be a true. Maybe that small group of President that met were from the non-magnificent seven schools & Notre Dame.

So I would think ESPN would want west coast presence. They are shut out of the Big Ten and the Mountain West. They will get a portion of the Big 12 in Arizona and Utah.
This would give them access to California with the ACC. Since they were offering the PAC12 $100 million they may pay the ACC something for those night games out west.

ESPN contract with the ACC is totally separate. The GOR would need to be signed by the 3 new members.

I don't think FSU & Clemson would have ever came close to getting the EIGHT. Tobacco Road schools are never voting to destroy the ACC. Those Tobacco Road schools just oppose expansion because it could possibly threaten their control over the ACC. UNC is like Texas in the old SWC & continuing on into the Big 12. All those schools left the Big 12 to get away from Texas. UNC doesn't want an upraising like that. However it is somewhat rearing it's head with the current situation with FSU & Clemson.
When FSU & Clemson leave the ACC. The B1G can just sweep in like they did twice in the PAC and take Virginia schools. If UVA accepts. The ACC will crumle like the PAC. The SEC may do the sweeping by taking other ACC members with FSU & Clemson.
SMU not taking ACC money for seven years will not stop that. Cal needs ACC money very badly. Stanford & SMU refusing media shares will not add that much to a 15 member pot. This is the same type bad deal that Swofford got the ACC with ESPN. The ACC Commissioners are like the PAC commissioners.

What FSU wants is a chance at more money. So if they can put something together that will allow for that, then FSU may say yes. I saw a POD Cast today on Ovies and Gigglio with the Wake Forest AD. The Wake AD said that his field hockey team played road games and Stanford and Cal this past season, and that if Stanford and Cal joined in football that ACC members would only have to play a road game out there once in 4 years. So that the travel burden would not be that great on the ACC members.
I don't think travel is FSU's issue. FSU wants a concession on the performance POT of money.

I agree they should not just give them more. They should have to earn it. It's how the Big East football conference was structured. Miami made more when they won it.

any problems? I know that ACC supporters have been dying for the conference to do something, anything. So here it is... what changes?
Some are saying the extra money will shut up FSU. FSU doesn't want "more money." FSU wants P2 money, B1G/SEC money.
Will VT be better off with a few million more? Wait until the travel tab hits the table.
ACC expansion, over the years, has caused more buyers remorse than the '59 Edsel. Not your strong suit, guys.

Likely the stupidest thing since B12 added 2 commuter schools.
I have been wondering why I just don't care that CFB season is a couple weeks away, I think it's because I hvlave no interest any more because if all this. Good for my golf game, that much less to keep me off the course on Sat.

Adding teams like Stanford, Cal, and SMU is why we are in this situation.
Dont get me wrong, Stanford and Cal are creme de le creme of schools but this does not help our sports.
Even if all three gave up their 30 million, it is not worth the extra monies we would get. And heck based off this, I would assume FSU and Clemson would get the bulk of it.

dirty enough to have fought for that SEC spot back in 2011, that is just the reality we're in. I doubt the B10 really would want us and the state government and VT leadership want us to be in the SEC, then you have to be resigned to being in the ACC. That said, the ACC has a niche with a lot of elite schools and ought to be viewed as a more attractive conference than the B12. If we're not going to be in the B10 or SEC, I think these schools are really good additions.

But the key will be with the football team and winning on the field. We have to get back to the top of the conference to take advantage of this and to help our future position.
Football needs to win and they only have a couple of years to make that jump back to the top. VT athletics is depending on football having success and getting the extra performance dollars.
