Report: 12-Team College Football Playoff Format Could Be Adjusted
Due to Realignment
“Under one proposal, the five highest-ranked conference champions would automatically qualify for the playoff. The other seven bids would be determined on an at-large basis. Another idea is to remove automatic qualifiers and place the 12 highest-ranked teams into the CFP, according to Dellenger.”

I see it as 7-3 against it.

At least let it finish the first two years before monkeying with it.

Heaven forbid the SEC wouldn't maximize profits for two years.

You know the moment it's top 12 ranked teams, 11 of them will be BIG/SEC
(In response to this post by WBGV)
12 at-large will be like the B1G-SEC Challenge. Except for football.

...with conferences and divisions within them. call them whatever they want, but get down to divisions of 7 or less for round robin play allowing plenty of intra/inter league scheduling by schools. allow each to hold their own playoff and keep all that money then have a championship game between the 2 winners (splitting that money). If we're going to chase money and the total and complete control of it, let's at least try to fix/improve the competitive format in the process by getting back to regional rivalries and minimal travel for non-rev sports.
i'm thinking with total control of all the money, these 2 leagues could probably absorb all the former P5 schools and even some up and coming G5 schools in new markets and still increase per school payouts. hell, they could even have payout floors with bonuses for the teams performing the best consistently. just stop ruining the student athlete/college sport experience in the chase for more money. you can at least try to do both.

independence. They would only have to be top 12 with the second option, but would have to be ranked higher than the 7 non-champions in the first option. Let's call the second option, The Notre Dame Guarantee.

Notre Dame appears to have “Jedi like” mind control over the committee and the power five conferences. They always get treated as a one school conference equal and get anything they want even if it’s not in the best interests of the conferences. Even though the power five conferences hold all the cards and all the power they somehow acquiesce to Notre Dame‘s best interests.

Swarbrick and Sankey couldn't get their first plan through the front door before they got their wrists slapped. Now they're just walking around the house looking for another unlocked side door to slide through.

Making a path to the playoffs through a regular season championship was a really smart thing to do, but you know what, nope, can't have that either. Somebody not in the B1G or SEC might make a buck.
"He reported the SEC and Big Ten are expected to advocate for a model of distributing revenue that sees each conference receive an amount of money commensurate with its size."......oh I bet they will
These guys don't really want to play football, they don't want to compete, they just want the money....all of it....every last nickel. To hell with everything that makes college football fun and compelling.
Its a damn shame there are not enough administrators with the stones to stand up and say enough is enough. At this point, I hope they destroy the sport completely. I really do.

NCAAF is becoming more and more anti-competitive.
I mean this in terms of market structures (we basically have a duopoly now). And this translates to on the field anti-competitiveness as well.
Pick a few random P2 schools and go back and look at their schedules from back in the 1970s or 80s. They used to play a REAL schedule. Real OOC road games. I was watching a 1970s Oklahoma at USC recording on YouTube this week--a September road game for the Sooners. Now, it's three or four home cupcakes. And if we're lucky, a good match up at some lame neutral site venue like Atlanta or Jerry's World. And the SEC is expanding for UT and OU but NOT playing more conference games? Total trash. Everyone's trying to keep their skirts pressed for the CFP.
And the ACC isn't innocent in this. With as many teams as we have now, we should be playing MORE conference games. Clemson and FSU don't want to do it since they have in-state OOC rivals. Plus, every third year they have to play ND. What a joke, these are the schools crying the hardest to go to the SEC, but they can't handle ND, UF or USCe and 9 ACC games? Please.

Something crazy like, 24 teams, with all conference champs getting auto bids. Allow teams to be in it if they want (or not) regardless of whether or not they are also in a bowl or in the other CFP. Hold it in the Spring, with teams hosting it in their venues, etc.
I think that would eventually overtake the LIV CFP, just like the NCAA tourney did over the NIT. For all of its flaws, the NCAA at least has a minimum level of trust.

great was that it was largely regional, more grass roots supported by Alumni and fans "local" to the school (generally). Trying to turn it into NFL junior will turn off a lot of fans, won't gain more fans in the NFL areas (Northeast and big cities) and it could go the way of NASCAR

As Techsupport said, let them burn the entire thing to the ground.

With huge amounts of bids, the Acc with a few and the Acc still makes the final 4 while they watch.

prepare to take financial hits. - Dennis Dodd
“The Mountain West and American are both in competition for any combination of the Pac-4. The MWC pays schools approximately $4 million per year in media rights with three years left to go on its deal with CBS and Fox. The AAC pays approximately $7 million per school and has 10 years to remaining on its deal with ESPN. In both cases, rightsholders for those conferences would have to go back to affiliates and ask for additional subscription fees. Stanford, and perhaps Cal, might have a bit more juice than the others, but it's doubtful rightsholders will pay much more for those four brands.”
These PAC-12 schools are in a world of hurt.

7 teams from Colorado to the West Coast and 7 from Texas to the East Coast. Then do hard divisions for everything.
For football, have 8 conference games, with only 2 reaching into the other division, one home and one away. That is doable. For everything else, do round robin within each division, or double round robin before reaching into the other, or something close to that.
The PAC could get SDSU, Boise State, Colorado State (or Fresno State) for the west
Then add something like SMU, UTSA, USF, Memphis, Tulane, UAB, and Charlotte (or Georgia State) to the east
Maybe do that with eight on each side with a nine-game football schedule, or maybe six.
It seems like trying to become the last place P5-ish conference (or clear #1 G5) is still doable, if they try rebuilding.

18 with 4 isolated out west just seems very unwieldy for scheduling purposes. Picking up another PAC-10 school and then another school in the East gives them 4 divisions of 5 teams each, with 5 in the Western division. Stanford would be the leading candidate because of their reputation for academics and all-around sports success. And because they play Notre Dame every year, they would be another enticement for the Irish to join the Big-10. If they can’t get ND for #20 though, the options become more limited. If the GOR wasn’t in place, I could see them going after UVA or even Miami as #20, either of which would pair up nicely with Penn St, MD, and Rutgers in a division.

it is one thing to say Cal/Stanford/SMU are now in the "footprint" for subs; another for the affiliates to actually agree to pay the bump

“This offseason saw another dramatic phase of college football conference realignment as eight current Pac-12 teams are scheduled to leave for other leagues and two Big 12 powers head to the SEC, all effective next summer. But if you listen to ESPN College GameDay analyst Kirk Herbstreit, it sounds like there's a lot more movement still to come. "I just feel like more's coming," Herbstreit said. "I don't feel like we're done until we get to August of 2024. I feel like anything and everything's in play.”

Take all 10 conference champions, assuming the PAC survives in some form, and two at large. That would share the wealth, and make the SEC and Big ten really mad. Probably make Notre Dame mad as well. So it's all a win!

Sankey wants the last can of Hoo Hash 🥫
He's talking out his arse here, big time. Pure sleeze.
Expansion wasn't about "bringing in Western Football" to the CFP. It was about making money for the B1G and the SEC. And if it was about football "west of the Rockies", why did the SEC not take Arizona or Arizona State? They stopped at the Plains.
Let's face it. The SEC cherry picked the "West" and now the SEC feels like there just aren't enough bids for the conference. This is rich.

of the P5 (Power 5) and G5 (Group of 5). We can see that the P category is about to be diminished by one. The future members of these two groups or any newly designated category is up-in-the-air.
