Finebaum thinks the B1G will likely hire Jim Phillips, thinks old school
thinking is what the B1G Presidents wants to get back to. Versus a TV guru, or entertainment guru or an NFL guy like Warren was. He thinks Jim Phillips who almost got the job last time, is exactly what they are looking for. HOO86 that sure would explain why there are crickets, or Phillips saying we need to turn the clock back and basically nothing else about the expansion that is going on, while the B12 and PAC never stop talking about it. The saying everything is on the table line, just another way of saying nothing. Heck John Skipper has said more about ACC expansion than anyone else. Maybe Philips takes his old school to the B!G and someone aggressive like John Skipper needs to take the ACC reigns. He certainly knows how to deal with ESPN and get an amazing deal for whomever he is representing. Okay it's a long shot, but a guy can hope can't he? :-) (Accidentally first posted on the football board) ** Edited by Stech at 3/15/2023, 12:56:08 PM

I hope he's gone. He's working for them now imo.
He jumped on the stupid alignment thing against the Sec because the big 10 was jealous and butt hurt. He's done nothing to get Acc teams into the tourney. Get the plant out of here.

This putz doesn't even understand that Miami-VT should be an annual series
as it has been for over three decades. Granted, will the GOR/TV hand he was dealt, it he didn't have much to work with as a commissioner. But I can't think of one thing he's done to elevate the conference. The B1G can have him at this point. Would rather get some new blood in.

I certainly understand why you feel that way.

Know he knows broadcast business and UNC graduate, however, is he a little old for the job and sorta out of the loop and also his weakness for drugs (that lead him to leave ESPN/Disney.

Wishful thinking.

My bold prediction, ACC lives on by going really old school
The Privates Syracuse, Wake, BC take the ACC name and merge with the AAC or the Big East. Miami (private) gets a P2 invite for football brand, market, and money Duke (private) gets a P2 invite for basketball brand, academics, and money ND (private) keeps doing their own thing or gets pulled into BIG The public schools get poached by BIG and SEC for the top teams. Everyone else joins the B12 as the third power conference. ** Edited by HokieAl at 3/15/2023, 7:55:42 PM

How does adding the leftovers that P2 doesn't want make a power conf?
the big12 isn't a power conference once Tex and OK leave, they have nothing left. The ACC leftovers after Clem, FSU and Miami are gone aren't going to add anything to that to make it competitive with the P2.

That's just media bias. There is plenty of value in having a (hypothetical)
22 team Big 12 that spans coast to coast with teams in AZ, CO, CA, TX, etc. There are a lot of people, a lot of markets, and a lot of fan bases for those marketing dollars. And many of those "leftovers" actually perform equal to or above many of the P2 members each year. Yes the money is different and teams would be hard pressed to catch the top of the P2. But otherwise the B12 should easily be able to maintain competitiveness as a power conference.

Did you forget that the media pays the bills?
Would say their "bias" carries the majority of the weight. Did you forget the media is who funds conferences, and without massive funding, P5 conferences turn into G5 conferences. You can add 100 schools to a conference and never bring in enough money per school to join the "big boy" party.

Don't agree, but I guess it's a definition of a power conference
to me, a power conference is a conference that can consistently compete for a championship and have 3 or 4 teams that can push those teams during the regular season. You can call it media bias, but media attention is what defines who is relevant and provides a huge advantage in generating revenue and attracting talent. The Big12 as it exists now, much less without TX and OK fails the first part, only the SEC and Big10 currently can do that. TCU getting to the final for the Big12 and Cinci getting to the playoff (both getting crushed) doesn't mean they are competing consistently. Expanding the playoff to 12 helps for a short time, but after the newness wears off, the networks will tire of airing blowouts that get ratings along the lines of the Fastlane Bowl and changes will be made, and those changes will not be good for anyone but the P2. Once the reshuffle happens, assuming it happens similar to what you propose, the national tv money is going to shift more to the P2 because they have the brands that sports fans nationwide, not fans of particular schools, will watch. In addition to the money, those conferences will get the media attention that attracts the top players who want to be seen nationally. The ACC/Big12/PAC could create a market, and maybe have a better overall level of competition, but it will be a minor league because they won't have the depth of talent or resources needed to compete consistently and maybe more importantly, to generate the national fan interest to engage the media machine to make them relevant.

ACC needs Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos to run the conference and...
stimulate its growth with their over abundance of cash. ACC can be the first conference to expand to the moon and eventually Mars. Take that $EC and B16. ;)

At this point, ACC should get an ESPN producer to run the league
What's there to do really that some TV executive couldn't manage? Since we've kowtowed to ESPN for the next 12 years, might as well be one of their guys.

With our luck, we would get Zuckerberg who wants to put all ACC games...

Bezos would work in spades. Musk would tweet the ACC into oblivion. And

In Pennsylvania, there is a Moon High School and a Mars High School.
If we would just add them, we'd save a lot on travel costs. Moon (Pittsburgh) are the Tigers Mars (Mars, Butler, PA) are the Fighting Planets ** Edited by Maroon Baboon at 3/15/2023, 4:25:09 PM
