Landman fans - what the heck happened to that show?
I finally watched it. I've never seen Yellowstone or those other old west soap operas, because I don't like soap operas. I do enjoy learning about how an industry works and watching well-drawn characters live in a unique environment. And I have always liked Billy Bob Thornton.
So I was very engaged in the first 3-4 episodes of Landman. The stuff about the lives of the roughnecks, the middle man "Landman" and the rich oil dudes was all interesting. And then there was some realistic drama with accidents and oil strategy and whatnot.
But then ... Angela. And Ainsley. And Cooper and Ariana. And Ainsley and various guys. Landman became a ... soap opera.
The season finale was roughly half of that nonsense (including the old folks escapades) and then half of an interesting story.
Are all these shows like that? So disappointing, especially given how it started.

the grand a month I need for Paramount+, HBO, Cinemax, Netflix, Amazon TV, Peacock...
I have Netflix, but I barely watch it. I'm too busy keeping up with the lounge.

The thing I like about his projects is he really seems to do his homework on whatever subject he’s writing about.
Peter Berg is another. American Primeeval is next up for me.

saying. Overall I enjoyed the show and am definitely hoping for a season 2. I'm not sure about the soap opera take, as I feel all TV dramas are to some point. Look at Sopranos, Breaking Bad, or The Wire. All were soap operaish at times. I do feel like too many storylines were going on by episode 4 or 5 of Landman. I think the Angela/Ainsley stuff is just to show what Tommy's life outside of work is like and provide some comic relief, but honestly Tommy himself provides most of the show's comedy in my opinion with his matter of fact delivery of one liners. So I'd like to see much less of Angela/Ainsley going forward. I kind of dread the scenes with just those two and their escapades. I don't mind the Cooper story because that's obviously going somewhere related to the oil industry. I do feel like it was unnecessarily rushed and would have liked to see a much longer arc with him working a crew before the explosion, him getting beat up, getting together with Ariana, and quitting. Going forward could be good with Cami becoming more central to the storyline in a potential season 2 along with Andy Garcia (don't remember his character's name). Overall, pretty entertaining but definitely has some flaws

... good characters. Tony's mental issues were the actual hook of The Sopranos, which otherwise might have been just another mob show. And the fact he had two families - the mob, and his actual family - was part of that world's dichotomy. That said, I often was annoyed at AJ and Meadow plots and would skip some of them.
Usually too much emphasis on couple relationships and ungrateful kids takes you straight to soap opera. That's what Landman did.

...that sometimes airs where they're like, "Hey, we love to kick back and watch a fun show after a long day of work just like you do, viewer, but to be clear our jobs are much safer and more professional than is being depicted here," lolol.

But then almost everything in the prestige TV era is, at its core, a soap opera. Serialized storytelling is usually going to be that way.
That said, as I've said here before, no matter how dumb these Taylor Sheridan shows can be, I would watch a million episodes. I eat it up.

but BBT's one liner delivery made it worthwhile - he is amazing at that.
Did not like the ending at all - unless, of course they are setting up another season.

but enjoyed the silliness of Angela. Angela character reminded me a bit of my first wife in attitude and craziness just not the hotness aspect.
