Had to get into the major work to get my attention I guess. Once that happened it was smooth sailing except for differential equations

See, that's the problem...
I fought, clawed, bribed and begged my way through calculus for more than two years, best I mustered was a C in any of those (thank god for freshman rule on 5-hour calc). Then I hit Diffy-Q's and notched a B+. TA taught the class and she actually gave a damn about teaching, and that was all the difference.

And to add insult to injury I put my cup up on my iMac and who should appear to help but my high school ex (who I had not seen in 4 years despite going to the same university). I felt about an inch tall.

Exactly the opposite...
She actually TAUGHT the material and was able to get us to absorb that material. Plus, she had very liberal office hours. She would take several of us at a time and basically have a group study session. If you took the time to visit her during office hours, you KNEW that material once you left.
I'll never forget how to apply Cauchy-Euler formula to linear functions.

He plays bass in a band at school and travels all over Tennessee and Kentucky playing shows. His grades show it.
