Apparently, VT did make a run at Torrian Gray but failed
He’s a long time buddy of Shane Beamer’s and were teammates at VT in the late ‘90s. He did get a promotion to Co-offsensive coordinator and raise out of it. I expect he has roots down in SC and his wife and two daughters had some input. Hard to argue friendship, family and money. At least, a credible effort for a high level talent was made. With any luck, we get a second shot at him if SC axes Shane next year. ** Edited by V333T at 12/29/2025, 7:49:31 AM

What about D’Angelo hall

That’s probably a lucky break. Might be the most overrated coach in VT…
History. I know coaching is not a stationary gig but anywhere Bud Foster hasn’t been DC prior to Shane, his stay has been short lived. I’m just not a fan of his as a coach.

We loved him until the last couple of years. He was apparently very
stubborn on some in game personnel decisions that bothered Bud and I know the raging nerds that follow recruiting really closely got extremely pissed at some stubborn lack of offers, etc.

TG was better....
than Cheetah ever was but, not nearly as good as he thought he was. He had a difficult time accepting the reality he was an Indian and not a chief, at least at that time. That was a big issue in Beamer's last years and a stark contrast to his earlier staffs, too many thinking they were chiefs and not willing to be indians.

No opinion on if TG was good at his job or not
Reading some this morning, many considered him high on their list. Still, I’m hoping to be surprised with who we pull as a DB coach. Noted while reading, that Shane hired Deion Barnes as DL coach after he was released by PSU. I had hoped we’d get Deion “Bedlam” Barnes (I gave him the nickname echoing Coach Chaos) if we did not get his prior boss, Coach Chaos (Sean Spencer). Well, we got Coach Chaos so I’m not at all disappointed.

I just want a DB coach that teaches to turn & look for the ball
That’s evidently been very hard for VT to do in the past.

That's an issue with coverage...not technique

Very common technique that is widely taught. DBs are being taught
to read the receivers not turn around for the ball because that slows you down. I see the argument for both sides though.

Talking about reading the receiver & turning to play the ball as it arrives
Tired of watching DBs watch receivers catch balls they could have defended had they turned a second earlier.

Only the elite master that. Most are taught to defend it without turning
their heads at all.

It's not taught b/c it's not a solid technique. You can't be looking back
for the ball constantly while also keeping track of the receiver. Ideally the DB stays with the WR and then when the WR's eyes/body indicate the ball is in the air the DB turns and finds the ball. In practice that is very difficult for a variety of reasons. The reaction time alone makes it tough. It's not that VT (or any other school) doesn't teach it. It's that it's not easy to do and given the choice between finding the ball or staying with the WR it's better to stay with the WR.

I can see in the future receivers on long routes will fake out their cover
guys by raising their hands early as if making a catch hoping that the DB will do just that.

That’s what I’m talking about

And they are already being taught to do that. But knowing it and doing it
are two very different things. In a real game, at real speed, with everything else happening even if you are right with the WR and even if you read his eyes right you still only have a second or two max to get your head around and find the ball. It's just an extremely difficult thing to execute. It's like asking why a QB doesn't put the ball between the numbers every single throw.

Yeah. VT hasn't been able to put DBs in the NFL due to this poor technique

This poor technique is widely used.
