Thoughts re Hendon Hooker
Much has been said of Coach F not figuring out how much talent he had to work with when HH didn't work out for us. But its hard to figure out who has the best potential with all the variables. HH didn't start for UT even after their Spring and Fall practices. It took their starter to get injured for Hooker to get his chance. Even Tom Brady road the pine for UM some and was in the 5th round.

...a lot of his V.P.I. epitaph, and likewise his UTenn résumé=pic...
St.Nikon bless his knee, now... ...tho' he stayed killed @V.Tech. You can even see the shoulder harness in the pic below. A cruel mistress this Terminal Contact... sport. 🇨🇭 b.street

I remember how he came back in after that. Crazy!

...it literally is bending -if not breaking- the ESM rulz. Truly... nutty.

That doesn't seem like a quitter to me.

it goes to show what a fine line success is at the QB position. I think
people greatly underestimate how important all variables are to leading to success. Supporting cast, coaching ability to develop that specific QB, scheme, etc. Plenty of busts could have been successful in different situations and plenty of studs could have busted in worse situations.

Yup. Archie Manning knew this. Why Eli refused to play for the Chargers

Take Paxton Lynch. Fuente made him look like a 1st round potential and he's
no longer even a backup.

He kept Corney who ran QB after QB out of VT, it's not just one thing
it's an accumulation of many things. I could go on, but the bottom line is that Fuente was not a good fit for Virginia Tech, just look at the Pinstripe Bowl and the butt kicking we got from Maryland with his recruits or what was left of them, Maryland a team that we have owned in the past, even when they were a Bowl team, but that was pure embarrassing after 25+ years of at least owning the best team in the mid-atlantic area.

I knew Fuente had to go when I heard Corn had chewed a QB who...
...had improvised to make a play. Whatever was called, that receiver wasn't open, but our QB found someone else open and had a completion for a nice gain. Once I heard that, I wanted those coaches (Corn and Fuente) gone! I wasn't happy with our on the field performance from the first ODU loss, but I held my tongue (and typing), but I didn't start slamming them on the board until I heard that. I also wondered if they had been doing that all along and this was the first time I'd heard about it. After seeing so many QBs leave the program, pretty sure my fears were well founded. If you are a "QB whisperer," your job is to develop QB to know what to do, especially if the play fails. You develop QBs to make the good decisions, not prevent them from making decisions.

That was my final straw.

That unbelievable fact turned me finally for good. Amazingly myopic.

They had to go but that story is to be taken with a grain of salt IMO.
There are two versions of the story and then the truth. We've heard 1 of the 3 and even that may have been filtered through a game of telephone.

100% agree. I always think that way.

I heard it here before he left.

To be fair, that was JV squad we put out there
Unless you are Alabama, Ohio State, LSU, etc you don't have the depth.

Fuente coached Hendon Hooker and Ryan Willis into the NFL
BG Hokie BG Hokie
Paxton Lynch is why Fuente never has to work again. Paxton Lynch led to
Fuente being a really smart hire for Virginia Tech. Fuente, couldn't capture that magic again...
kingofcassell kingofcassell
worst part about that story
Fuente didnt even recruit Lynch. Apparently Memphis's AD or asst AD at the time did all of the legwork and got Lynch on campus

Tom Brady owes his success to Scott Loeffler....
It's not just QB coaches, if you've ever coached an NFL RB or WR, people tend to put that all over their resume too.

For HH’s sake, I hope he doesn’t land somewhere cold.

Yeah he looked like he was out of it in that last cold game with his ticks.

Willis maybe. Hooker got there based on his play at UT. Fu's biggest
problem was he appeared to be the only good coach on his staff.

But also to say Hooker wasn’t “developed” at VT is false
He was worlds better when he played in 2019 than when he was redshirting in 2018. 2020 is a huge anomaly due to Covid specifically with the post-Covid Issues Hooker was apparently dealing with that came to a head with the reaction he had in the Clemson game

I view him as being in a perfect situation
Two coaching staffs thought he might look better holding a clipboard. Then he gets thrown into an offense with playmakers all around and told to sling it. It worked great. I do not see him as a great decision maker under pressure. I do not see him being a successful NFL quarterback. But, he proved me wrong at Tennessee, and I would be happy for him to prove me wrong again.

He didn't hold a clipboard. He wasn't a backup.
He didn't hold a clipboard. He wasn't a backup. He took over the starting position in 2019 during the third game of the season. He started 8 games for us that year. He was cemented as the starter headed into 2020, however a few weeks before the season he had a medical issue and wasn't cleared to play. He sat the first two games. Hooker came into the third game late in the first half. He then started the next seven games. The seventh game was the Clemson "incident" and he was pulled and then didn't start or play in the last game of the season (UVA). He transferred January 7th of 2021.

The point is he didn’t win the starting job in practice at VT OR UT

I don't view HH as not working out for us..maybe
Coach F, but not "us". Maybe VT did not work out for him. I hated to see him go. He did a lot while was here given what he had, and his coach Brady was drafted in the 6th round ** Edited by fnhokie at 4/27/2023, 8:21:50 PM

I still remember both he and QP playing in that 6 OT game against UNC. We
had 3 QB’s contribute that day.
