The rankings I'm most concerned about...
...are these, and not football. Honestly, I think we can do both, and that's what we should strive for. But if only one of those was sustainable, I'd prefer to be known as a national top 10 public university, and number 1 in the state.

Not really an academic ranking. "Student experience and future earnings"...
Still a noteworthy distinction....just calling balls and strikes. I don't think top 10 public is coming anytime soon. We've moved up 5-7 spots in the last 25 years or so. Since these are not mutually exclusive anyway, I'm not sure what the point is. Kinda sounds like sour grapes tbh.

I see your point, but no reason we can't do both.

Go back and read my post...
I plainly said, "Honestly, I think we can do both"

I disagree. I don't think you can pursue academics and "sell your soul"
to the athletics gods.

? The entire B1G is made up of AAU schools.

They got to where they are now when college sports was still a
gentleman’s game. They are grandfathered in at this stage.

Michigan/OSU NIL is many millions of dollars/year. Don't see your point.
The only diff between us and them is the size of our budget.

Yeah I can't stand UNC at Cheating Hill just as much as you do
but it's one of top public schools in the nation ** Edited by Windows NT at 3/25/2025, 9:23:39 PM

now thats ok but
During Playoff times, these teams will be irrelevant in the national discussion, not on TV - irrelevant... and associated rights and values of rights of sports related teams diminish and with that signficant loss in revenues and sports offered.. That is an option. but with it goes not complaints why the athetlic teams cannot be ranked, beat anybody, and performance on the field.

strong academics. beautiful campus. great weather!

I took a few minutes to look at the Big12 academics...if there is an ACC
and Big12 merger the old snooty Tobacco Road types are going to catch the vapors. The average USNWR National University rankings for the BIG 12 is a smooth #140. The highest ranked school is Baylor at #91...with the cousins pulling a #220. It will be entertaining to watch if nothing else.

What about Pitt and Syracuse?

not good academically
Tuckahokie Tuckahokie
Those are both solid schools (Pitt #70 and Cuse #73)

Pitt is an AAU school. I am certain they would tell you that they are not
inferior to VT academically. Pitt and Syracuse also have more competitive acceptance rates than VT. So I am not sure what criteria you would use to eliminate schools for the conference, but like everyone else's criteria, it is subjective and probably not the best way to pick conference members.

aau... basketball? LoL
lots of top univ don't have aau membership.. VT, USD, USNA, AFA, West Point, W&M... In the Wall Street Journal/College Pulse's 2025 "Best Colleges in the U.S." ranking, Pitt is ranked #167 and Syracuse is ranked #164 among public universities Best to follow the $$$ and not aau membership. ** Edited by Windows NT at 3/25/2025, 8:14:06 PM

Maybe our academic profile will increase enough to get an invite to the
Ivy League. Pretty stable athletic conference at least. In all seriousness, WSJ is just one measurable. And how one measures all of this is anyone's guess. I can't imagine most people thinking that VT is the top public school in Virginia with UVa around. I'd like to think we are number one, but I am biased. Certainly the AAU and USN&WR (among other subjective listings) would disagree. If only the WSJ were handing out AAU invites. Academics is not the enemy of athletics and vice versa. And being a conference or national champion in a sport is a much more objective and tangible goal than pleasing any of the above. So while it's flattering to know that WSJ holds us in such high esteem, I think I'd rather win a national championship in football. ** Edited by Maroon Baboon at 3/24/2025, 6:54:24 PM

Ok. Serious question for you...
Is Virginia Tech a university or a professional football team? Because 38,000 people don't go there for 4 years just to watch football games.
R

Serious question! UVA stepping up with NIL
UVA will demonstrate you can do both! Takes good leadership. UNC moving in the same direction and UVA about 1 to years behind them. Enough time to exit to P2 invite. This is why UNC and Duke never wanted VT because unable to walk and chew gum at the same time!
