Why play Wofford?
I see that on the VT sked here soon? Seems like a waste of a game to me. Should be used for in-state opponents. Liberty, JMU, William and Mary. Still hope one day George Mason will have a team.

GMU will never have a team. Redskins/WFT/WTF they are wanted to build
The facility and GMU still said no.

Yep, they have no interest in fielding a football team.

Which as a GMU alum I absolutely hate and why I’ll never donate a penny

I'm cool with playing VMI for old time sake
if we must play a non-P5 school from the state.

Its not so much playing these teams, it is playing them as away games.
Alabama, Georgia, LSU, USC, Penn State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Michigan, Clemson, etc. etc. etc. do not play the Woffords, ODUs, Libertys, etc. as away games. They play them at home and that's that, yet we schedule away games with these teams with no upside benefit. If you want to play like the big boys, you schedule like the big boys. The fact we schedule with these teams as away games, demonstrates we consider ourselves to be second rate. I'm not knocking these schools nor their programs but do you see those schools listed at the top playing at these smaller schools? No.

You do not see those.....
schools playing away at smaller schools but, there is more involved than VT considering themselves second rate. IMO the missed opportunity for VT was scheduling as home and homes versus getting 2 for 1s and/or other additional considerations/contract concessions. Scheduling and all that it involves financially, logistically, etc. is a whole lot more difficult than just calling somebody up and saying let's play or in the case of schools of varying size the larger just saying you come here. I have always believed that is one of the more underappreciated things about the Weaver/Beamer pairing. Those guys were pretty good at balancing risk/reward. That is also one of the larger failings of the UVA athletic administration with respect to football. It is also a skill set that Whit has plenty of room to improve upon but, that I would have expected him to be better out of the gate with considering Ballein's experience and availability to support. ** Edited by 2hhoop3 at 9/11/2022, 9:24:24 PM

Again, a good post. Ballein is available, but is he being asked and
is he opining. Hypothetically, how helpful does Ballein want to be when he applied to be AD but Whit was picked?

All valid questions.....
and possibly a substantial piece of the operating dynamics. I do not know the answer or even have an inkling what the reality might be. However, I know that effective leaders recognize what they don't know and use those on their staff to effectively compensate and/or go outside and find help to supplement/complement their skillset. I also believe that an employee should be a team player and if they are not I do not want them on my team. That's a long winded way of saying effective organizations cut through the BS and find a way to get the job done. I think money, inexperience and learning to work together are valid explanations, not excuses, for why things may not happen as fast as we would like but, they are not a permanent free pass, at least IMO.

They have more money, we are second rate.

We are playing Liberty… at Liberty for some dumb reason
We often play W&M and haven’t played JMU since the 2010 debacle. I’m glad we’re playing Wofford. If we’re going to pay a team to come play us, it should be a weak FCS program in my opinion. No offense to Wofford, but they’re not North Dakota State or Montana.

Ah yes that is correct. I stand corrected however..
Stil seems like a slot for an in-state FCS team. Liberty I think is FBS now?
