If not for Lawal's improbable rebound off the missed FT,
We may be lamenting another last minute blown lead. Thankfully he's back now and starting to play at full strength. All the elements were there: missed FTs, turnovers, quick shots, getting trapped on the inbound. ** Edited by DoYouLiftHokies at 1/22/2026, 8:55:36 AM

A freak athlete is put there to make the rebound more probable.

He did the exact same thing against SMU.
He rebounded a missed free throw with just over three seconds left, and Tech up by two. Last night he rebounded a missed free throw with five seconds left and Tech up by three. It was deja vu. Except this time he had two free throws, instead of a one-and-one, and he made both. We ended up shooting 72.2% from the FT line for the game, and 75.8% in the second half. The play that hurt us the most down the stretch was the Hammond foul on the three-pointer.

The play that I was upset with was that we went for the dunk on the...
fast break instead of trying to eat time off the clock.

There was an “air gap” of at least a foot between Hammond hand and the
Shooter’s. ACC Officials are [redacted by TSL Staff]…and have always been. It’s hurt the conference in the tournament almost every year. SEC Big Ten big 12-they’ll let him play much more than the ACC officials. ** Edited by Chris Coleman at 1/22/2026, 10:53:45 AM

i think they called him for getting underneath him when he landed
I am not sure why we are trying to contest that shot that hard to begin with. it was past NBA range.

The board complained about 3 D. Challenge one and get a foul called. 🤦‍♂️

That's the "cataract/vision gap"........
Or sometimes the "expectation gap"....... The TV replays, when provided, usually show the various vision and expectation gaps in foul calls. I don't mind the close ones, but the "Teddy Valentine - Cattoor" type are mind boggling and detract from the game and credibility of the zebras..

I don't think they called the foul for upper body contact.
I think they called it for lower body contact. And the lower body of both players weren't visible in the replay, so I can't tell you whether it was a foul or not.

the "foul"? Hammond didn't touch him.

Looked like a little leg contact, not enough for a foul,
Then a flop to sell it.

Good take
The foul was certainly a head scratching mistake by a player that pretty much put the team on his shoulders in the second half. I would add that our inbound plays against the press are atrocious. Need to run some action to get the ball to someone who is moving vertically up the court rather than horizontally into the corner. I know there is only so much practice time available, but our inbounding mistakes have contributed to turning valuable wins into soul-crushing losses. Also, Schutt should have taken a timeout. I think we had some left, but was experiencing Hokie sports induced 🤮, so didn’t check.

they didnt show a good replay but i didn't see him touch the shooter
they said he hit his lower body but the one replay looked liked Hammond wasn't close to the legs

Hammond played a great game, but he made a couple mistakes late.
Fouling the three-point shooter with 45 seconds left, and he missed a 3-pointer early in the shot clock (13 seconds into a possession) with two minutes to go and VT leading by 7. Should have run more clock.

Jumping with shooter- not fouling
Our guys are too scared of fouling in last 2 minutes with a lead. They let teams run to basket unopposed which is bad coaching. Contest stop the shot and let them try to make foul shots.

These should be very coachable things to correct. Avdalas passed on an
open 3 during the last minutes and ran clock. The inbounds turnover was also a coachable thing that is not getting communicated well enough.

He plays like a freshman
I don't think he ever started in the Greek league, he was not exposed to a lot of end of game pressure. He also didn't play against players with the type of quickness he is going against now. My question is why is Bedford not playing late in games? Better defender and has played in a lot of pressure situations in his career. I know he has not been a great FT shooter this year although the last couple of years he shot over 70%.
