What’s the guess on VTs position in media picks?
I’m guessing 11. Women a little lower, 12.

I really don't know exactly where I'd pick them.
There is so much roster turnover in sports these days that it's taken me half the season to memorize Tomas Rimac's number. And that's my own team. I don't know jack about other basketball teams right now. Pretty much all ACC basketball rosters have been gutted since last season, with some new coaches as well. You're pinning the tail on the donkey, basically. The only thing I can say is that I don't know that I've seen Young this confident before.

Chris - I agree with you 100%. Spoke to him last year right before…
the season, and I walked away thinking, “uh-oh.” He didn’t come out and say, “don’t expect much,” but those were the implications. This year’s confidence is not typical CMY. I hope this team gels and plays to their potential. I know I haven’t been this high on Hokie hoops in awhile, if ever.

Didn't we have another coach recently that we said the same thing
about preseason? A certain football head coach? or am I misremembering? LOL

difference is that guy couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper bag.
Young's problem is never about actual coaching ability.

Personally, I wouldn’t remotely compare Pry to Young.

yeah seriously.
Mike Young has been a head coach for a longggg time and has seen it all. If he likes the team, I like it too. He's also not the kind of guy to shy away from voicing his concerns about a squad.

do you think fair to say this is the most
talented team, 1-13 (or say 1-9), that coach MY has had in his career? ** Edited by 804Hokie at 10/8/2025, 3:29:54 PM

Hard to compare.
Tobi Lawal does some things better than Mutts, but he also does some things worse obviously. Hansberry will be really good I think, but he's not quite as big as Aluma. Nobody on the wing will shoot the 3 like Cattoor, but Bedford and Johnson should be better around the basket. I guess Neo pushes the pure talent level up ahead of his past teams, but overall it's a very different type of team than he's had in the past. I think this is more like his second team in terms of grittiness, defense, rebounding, and stuff like that.

I agree on those three comparisons, but 1-9 I
Think this is his best, deepest roster of his career. I believe in his coaching abilities and roster mgt, and throw Frazier back into the mix. I’m excited.

I don’t either for the same reason.
But I’m fairly confident this team will not be outmatched by any team they face.

I'll guess 12th, I'd put them 8th

I have a vote for MBB. Haven't done my full research yet, but
I think I'll have VT around the middle of the table, like 8-10. (That's probably what I'd have for WBB too.) But... expect many other voters to have VT lower. Saw a colleague of mine, whom Teel mentioned on the podcast yesterday, had VT 15th for MBB. That is way, way, way too low. Like doesn't make sense low (IMO). I agree that MBB will probably be around 11th by the overall media. WBB... probably in that same 10-12 range (though I'd have them slightly higher).

I was surprised you think WBB is a NCAA team.
They lost three good players in Eck, White and Rose and replaced them with three not as good players in the portal. No size on the team. Unless Wenzel and Baker really improve, I don’t see anything more than an average team.

We are WAY more athletic than a year ago and can play different styles than
a year ago. We also have a bit more depth. In addition to Wenzel and Baker, I expect improvement from Nelson, Petersen, and Suffren. We will be a difficult matchup for a lot of teams simply due to our athleticism. Freelon will be a matchup nightmare, as will Suffren when she is back to full speed. Also, we did lose three good players but we gained three good (and more versatile) players as well as potentially 4 freshmen who can contribute. We were VERY close to being a tournament team last year - with a full year in CMD's system it wouldn't surprise me at all if we make the tourney this year.

Agree, and particularly the fact that this is Duffys second year with this
team will be big. And having Suffren back and healthy.

Alas, we lack height and "bigs" under the basket to compete with top teams
vt90 vt90

A lack of height/rebounding is a weakness for sure. I didn't say we would
be an elite 8 team or anything. I simply said we will be better than last year and have a very good chance of making the tournament. Just as we won't match up well with teams that have a lot of size, other teams will lack the athleticism to compete with us.

David, I have Louisville, Duke. UNC, NCSU, Clemson and maybe uva above VT.
I think VT will finish 3rd at highest and 9 at lowest. It is tough to pick alot of 1st year coaches, roster turnover high all around the league. Not to mention unbalanced conference schedules some much harder than others!

I forecasted we finish in the top 6 down the board.

We finished tied for 9th last year.
Given how much we have improved it seems unlikely that we finish in the middle of the pack again.

The ACC was terrible last yr, it’s going to be good this year.

The ACC finally woke up to the NIL game, in both football and basketball.
All it took was two years of ass-whippings from the SEC for the ACC (as a group) to realize that big NIL budgets are a good idea.

I'd agree with you as I put alot of stock in coach Young and coach Frazier
However pretty much every team went out and upgraded their roster talent wise.

Makes me wonder how many teams think they drastically updated their roster
based on adding players other teams lost, who also think they upgraded their roster.

Well Will Wade at NCSU brought in a haul of talent for sure. Odom pretty
Much turned uva roster over. They will be totally different style of play wise. Miami's coach is unproven, but also brought in a load of talent. Clemson is consistently good now and reloads without much trouble. I don't know how much talent UNC brought in alot I am sure, but I would not underestimate their coaches ability to *crew it up! I think Syracuse brought in some nice pieces, but I am not sold on Autry as coach yet.

seems like this may be one of the deepest ACC's in awhile based on that.
