So, how good could this team be?
I donβt follow or know basketball, but several things Iβve read here recently seem to suggest that folks within believe we can be good. Iβm curious about the ceiling (& hoping we hit it). π

Tough to say how improved the ACC will be but the overall NCAA should be comparable year to year. Once in the tourney, advancement is mostly about matchups and how hot you are at that time. So predict an O/U anywhere from Out to bubble (first 4 out or/ in) to safely in (and the associated seed).
My O/U prediction is safely in with a seed of 9.
Thoughts?

The assumption here is that there are no serious injuries
Regular Season Top 1/3 in ACC 90%
Regular Season Top 4 in ACC 50%
ACC Tournament Finalist 33%
ACC Tournament Winner 20%
NCAA Tournament 80%
Sweet 16 25%
Final Four 5%

Finishing top 3 in the ACC would be an enormous coup. The ACC is much better this year than in recent years. I'm not saying top 3 is impossible, but the odds are far far worse than 90%. I think this team should pretty comfortably finish in the top half of the conference, I would imagine probably somewhere between 5th-8th.
Will that be enough to make the tournament? Depends entirely on the strength of the conference. We have a tough schedule with a lot of our hardest games on the road, which is both good and bad. Lots of chances for statement wins, but they are much harder to achieve.

We finished tied for 9th last year and we have improved more than any other team in the league. I think my forecast is realistic.

Lville, NC State, and UVa have improved the most in conference. Not saying the talent addition isnβt good at VT, but all three elevated their rosters to a better degree than VT. The impending season will obviously answer opinions.
Duke, NC State, Lville will comprise the top 3. UNC, UVA, Clemson and VT will battle for 4-6. Today id say -
1. Lville
2. Duke
3. State
4. UVA
5. UNC
6. VT
7. Clemson

New coach, whole new roster...
While visiting the message board of the team with Top 3 most returning production, brings in a higher rated prospect than UVA has in the last 5 decades and a coach with an ACC Championship
I'll give it up, that takes some balls...or delusion

top third is much more realistic obviously. still don't know that I would put it at 80% chance. I think that's probably closer to Louisville's odds for that kind of projection
I don't think you're crazy though. It would be one think if this team had some kind of success last year and was returning the core with the additions that we have. Then I would think for sure, pretty much no doubt we make the tournament. But this team didn't have success last year. It was one of the worst teams in recent VT MBB memory. They still have a lot to prove.

But with what about 350 or so div 1 schools and a lot of automatic qualifiers, getting at at large bid means you are likely a top ten percent, or close to it, team. I hope we are that much of a near slam dunk....but I wouldnt take that bet from Vegas.

strong NCAA run, a lot has to go right. Need health and a hot streak and the stars to align. But that's the case for every single team in March.
If things do line up for us, we have the talent, depth and versatility to return punches against the very best.

I think he's as good as anyone in the country, and the sky's the limit now that he has a roster like this.
