Wasn't he just hired by Penn State

I think his wife is VT’s head volleyball coach?
If nothing else that should help with staff continuity, assuming the volleyball team can stay on an upward trajectory

I believe so

#2 chair?

Would have to think while some of the offers were to be top assistant...
...this one would be to be third assistant and bump the others up. Just my 2 cents.

Agreed

Yep wait and see. Maybe the former VT assistant rumor doesn't have legs.

Per Chris Arvin 247, that was Frazier and it fell through.

Hm thought folks were saying Bill Courtney. Guess sources are getting mixed

It was Frazier.

Ah my bad, I was going off of a previous thread.
I'm in no way linked to any sources so i was trusting 2nd hand

Courtney was contacted
I assumed when people said former assistant they had caught on there...they were talking of someone else James Johnson was also interested, but unsure of the reciprocation Jamion Christian was interested but obviously not for a 2nd chair role to bump up Webster (he was/is getting other offers)

Would have been kinda awkward for JJ to return as assistant, no?
I guess stranger things have happened

If there's one thing I know about JJ...
It's that he's never felt he's too big for any job. He loves basketball, loves his players and wants to help people get better. He's a lot better with relationships than program building, but he's not under the assumption that he deserves more than he's been given
Chris Coleman Chris Coleman
It wouldn't have been for JJ.
He was in town back in December. Went to a few games wearing VT gear. Good guy.

Thanks, good to hear. As a fan/alum I never faulted JJ too much
He wasn't dealt a great hand. I'm not sure other than Mark Byington he ever had a staff to recruit well, and they still found some diamonds in the rough like Emelogu and Trevor Thompson that could have developed. Hope he lands back in coaching soon.

Hmmm...wife is our Head Volleyball Coach.

Pretty accomplished guy, just hired at PSU with Rhoades

His background doesn't do much for me.

Seems to me he did pretty good wherever he was

Hard to evaluate asst 🏀 coaches
Is it the head coach W-L record or industry reputation? Or both? I’m 🏈 you watch their unit and look at advanced stats. Mike doesn’t even publicize a specialty for his assistants. ** Edited by tallahasseehokie at 4/7/2023, 12:45:19 PM

He doesn't publicize a specialty bc they don't have one

They do at VCU, and have as long as MR was the head coach...
...this is from Jamal Brunt's bio in his hiring at Penn State: "Brunt engineered one of the nation's top defenses throughout his time at VCU as associate head coach and defensive coordinator, helping the Rams to three NCAA Tournament appearances, four national postseason appearances, a pair of Atlantic 10 regular-season titles and an A-10 tournament championship during his five seasons on Rhoades' VCU staff." Byers was always the offensive coordinator and Jamal Brunt the defensive coordinator.

I'm talking about MY
tallahasseehokie tallahasseehokie
so, how are they evaluated?
How does anyone but Mike evaluate any of his assistants in their performance at Tech?
G
GCHokie34
What they bring to the table...
MY has his own criteria I'm sure just like any boss in any career. Mike Young is far from the only coach to not have defensive and offensive specialists. It's much more common not to have them than have them. I think people are getting stuck on them due to the familiarity with football and those distinct roles
C
Cvillehoops13
VCU under Rhoades had offensive and defensive coordinator roles...
...and he coached the offense while Jamal Brunt did the defense. No idea why it is listed on Brunt's bio but not his but I'm 100% sure those were the roles. Brunt was always considered the ace recruiter on that staff for whatever that is worth.
