All you need is a couple Tech Bro billionaire Stanford grads to get an itch
and all of a sudden you have Texas Tech and Stanford paying NFL salaries for backup long snappers.

If you're interested we had a thread on this where a few of our attorneys
chimed in with their explanations of the legal aspects involved and potential workarounds

Definitely. UVA's wall street types have been on a bit of a heater. Tony
met with a few of them and made a sales pitch: this is what's required in the current set up. UVA can't win without adequate funding. Fund the program and we will win games. Next season, he rips off 10 wins, a berth in the acc championship game with a chance to go to the CFP. We had a few other 8 figure donations throughout the season. The money situation looks on track for UVA. The issue, to me, is more about being at a competitive disadvantage relative to the power conferences. They're getting so much more money than TV that you need more and more billionaires to keep up with the P2. We just don't have that many. The gap will continue to widen, so I'm happy that Now It's Legal, and UVA is now playing to win.
But in the short term, yes. Absolutely UVA is in a better position to make the CFP in the ACC than the SEC or the B1G. Long-term sustainability will require both of our schools to somehow close the big boys' advantage in the y/y funding

Any thoughts about Franklin saying that VT hired him in part to better
Position Virginia Tech in the next round of realignment? I wonder if he knows somethingβ¦
I have no link to the interview, but it was apparently in reference to signing Day on ESPN. I read about it secondhand on the Sabre.
I am of the opinion that the next round of realignment is less likely to be expansion, rather contraction. Unless the Big Ten is able to poach UNC or FSU, consolation prizes to Miami and Clemson, theyβre unlikely to move. I think the SEC is only likely to move on UNC. Otherwise everyone is sitting on thumbs until the ACC GOR implodes.
Programs like Syracuse, Boston College, Vandy (despite recency bias), Buttgers, Purdue, or Mississippi State likely add very little to power- and quasi-power conferences in the new media landscape. Further, none is investing into their programs sufficiently to make success sustainable. Decades of business consulting dogma tells these suits and their consultants that itβs easier to increase profits by cutting the dead weight than it is to grow the pieβ¦

Weβre better positioned in 2027. Weβre hoping to have a few guys on βship
Who are also collecting social security next season. Bill snyder at ksu built a national power on juco and lighter recruited guys. It can be done but it is a bit harder to build your culture with wholesale turnover each year

Week 14 might not matter for the acccg
If Pitt beats Georgia Tech, Louisville beats SMU, and UNC beats Duke in week 13, UVA will play in the ACC championship game regardless of the outcome in week 14.

He has a groh-clause
I think groh took the dc job at GT for 200k/year. His uva contract stipulated that his salary would be deducted from his buyout, so he intentionally took a job in the coastal for a below market salary.

No, UVA's scholarship student draw nothing from the endowment.
The athletic scholarships are funded by the VAF and the endowment doesn't support the VAF in any capacity. Academic scholarships at UVA, which are hyper competitive, are typically endowed scholarships with their own fund. The Echols scholars don't have any tuition benefits IIRC; it just allows for preferential class selection in CLAS. Jefferson scholars have tuition and stipend benefits, but those kids were typically deciding between a full ride at UVA or paying full or partial freight for Harvard, Yale, Princeton, or Stanford. Those are the ones I remember from 20 years ago bc I was CLAS. I'm sure their are other programs and funds at UVA that support students

What would the realignment landscape look like if Penn St had joined the
ACC in the early 90s alongside FSU? I doubt the ACC would be on the verge of implosion.

I'm not sure the ACCN dollars are worked out, but I think it's around $3mn
per school per year based. That's something, better than nothing, but it's probably not going to move the needle too much if we're staring down the barrel of a $30mn shortfall annually. The ACC is unrecognizable at this point. Just kill it with fire already

Maybe this is a duct tape move to get some more money, since itβs probable
That the acc loses members when the GOR ends. If youβre selling this to fsu, Clemson, and UNC, maybe you just say that this narrows the gap for the immediate term with potential to make real hay. If it doesnβt work, thereβs just a few years remaining in the contract and the GOR and you can leave then

I donβt believe the same dynamics play in this round. UVA and state pols
Could put the screws to the acc to include vt because uva sat secure. In a world where both could be left in the cold, the state pops would not cut off their noses to spite their faces. If one school is left in the cold, itβs better than both of them

Thereβs a landing spot for both schools. It may not be what both schools
Want, but neither program will be left without a chair when the music stops.

The sec and acc were once in a league together: the old southern conference
Bama, Georgia, uva, unc, vmi, Washington and Lee were all in a conference together. I think at its peak there were 28 teams in the old SoCon, but my memory may be flawed

Stanford may be happy to sit the semi pro athletics era out.
Uva went through that phase in 1951, and persisted through 1982.

Pretty close to 0%. Texas is the most valuable athletic department in NCAA
They move the needle more than any other program in the game.

You don't get to the line very often if you don't go hard to the basket.
Shooting 44% from 3 (12/27) is pretty damn good. It is literally half of the field goals attempted 27/55! Jump shooting teams tend not to be the ones who draw a bunch of fouls. I didn't catch the game, but looking at the box score gives you a pretty good indication why VT isn't getting many FTA.
