Posting History (83)

Pitt

I'm pretty sure it's at Pitt next year in their new arena. I also saw a rumour on twitter that this was the last year it would be a one day event. Not sure if that's been discussed on this board or not. Rock and Kenney mentioned that there might be a format change next year but then they kind of hushed up. No idea how they would work a two day tournament.

Good Possibilities

I see good possibilities to wrestle above seed at 141, 149, 165, 174, and 184. Interested to see a Mullen-Pitzer rematch too. Crook can beat Consiglio in the semi's. Likely would face Jack in the finals. We know how that goes. Gaj (if healthy) can beat Valencia in semi's and has a 50/50 shot vs Buesgens in finals. Church vs Parco in semi's could go either way. Denny will win vs anyone in the finals. Serg has a shot in semi's vs Augustine, that went to tie breakers in the dual. If he loses there he can beat Wallace from duke in the consi finals. Bullock can beat Wojcikiewicz in semi's. Could face Dailey in the finals and is 2-0 vs him. Jimmy can beat Pitzer - we've seen it. Nobody is beating Trumble That's 6 weights that have a *chance to wrestle above seed and none of them are outlandish.

Keegan & Melvin

Keegan should have a semi final clash with #15 Brock Rothermel (PITT Commit) at 121lbs. Could be a great spring board into his Junior year. Melvin shouldn't face much resistance. #2 seed is ranked #13 by Flo at 157 heading to American.

Close to my predictions

Only differences i have are below: 157: I think Miller gets the two seed. He's 5-1 in ACC Comp with the only loss to Cardenas. Nobody else could be ranked ahead of him. 165: This is messy. Denny clear #1 but after that, woof. Hepner is the next ranked nationally, but he's 2-3 in ACC comp with losses to Denny (MD), Church, and Parco. Parco has wins over Hepner and Keslar, Church has wins over Hepner, Duke and UVA, Keslar has a win over Church. Anything opposite Denny is ideal for Mac. I would go: Parco 2, Church 3, Hepner 4, Keslar 5 197: Sasso is the clear #3 seed. Posada 6-0 in ACC and Stout 5-1 both beat Sonny by clear margin.

More

Church likely the 4 seed behind Denny, Hepner, and Keslar if i had to make a guess. That's assuming he goes 2-1 in the remaining ACC Duals. Duke and UVA are pretty bad there. Parco could beat Keslar in the Pitt/Stanford dual though which would make things messy. Sergio is 1-3 vs ACC Comp. He beat Stanfords Guffey in that dual (barely). He has two big matches against Hamilton and Wallace (Duke) that will determine his seed between 3-5. All are similarly ranked. UNC and Stanford will be 6-7 there. 3 seed here would pay dividends. Sasso and Mullen will be 3 seeds unless one takes a bad loss.

Positives and Negatives of the 2 seed

Positives, like you said, 2 seed is likely to rack up 1-2 bonus points in their first match. Negative is there are a lot of good 3 seeds this year that will make for a much tougher second round than the 4/5 seed. 125, 149, 157, 197, 285 all have top 15ish guys in the 3 seed that it would be beneficial to miss. The addition of Stanford and Pitt being pretty good has kind of flipped that compared to years past. Examples: 125 will be a Provo vs Robinson matchup. Good for EV to avoid that. Double good that it decreases chances of a NCST finalist 149 will likely be a Buesgens vs Valencia matchup. Good for Gaj to avoid that even though a likely 1v4 matchup with Kade Brown is tough too.

2's

Piggy Backing off Hokie90_CA: 125: Robinson (NCST) or Provo (Stanford) - lean Provo with the head to head win 133: Knox (Stanford) 141: Jack (NCST) 149: Buesgens (NCST) 157: Miller (VT) 165: Hepner (UNC) 174: Augustine (PITT) 184: Kranitz (PITT) 197: Stout (PITT) or Posada (Stanford) 285: Pitzer (PITT)

Yes they do

Assuming you're talking about Rozas & Coluccio. I was taking them into account. Both would be very young (RSFR & True FR) in a year VT is hoping to push for a team trophy. I'm just thinking that may be a spot to plug through the portal for a year if needed.

It's Rutgers

Hard to fault him for staying with his home state school and getting a big bag. Always thought it was a little far fetched for him to want to gray shirt this year and red shirt at VT next year (assuming EV is returning). Looking like VT will need to hit the portal for a 125 starter for the 27-28 season unless I'm forgetting someone.

Hope So

74 and 84 were rough this weekend. Hopefully Sergio improves and takes it up a few notches as the season goes. I think what we saw at 184 is about what we should've expected though. Beat #63 on WS, lost to 3 (2x), 20, and 27. I would really like to see what Gage could do here.

Henrich

Hoping Henrich can still make 57. That would be a solid stop gap until Miller is ready. Would be nice to see what we have in Henrich too. Not many two time NJ state champs walking around.

This is a pretty fun one

My guess would be somewhere in the 60s. Using really incomplete data on McCorts lineup and a lot of guessing with results. Trying to keep in mind some of these age gaps could be 5-7 years, which really matters for the HS wrestlers not named Forrest, Basset, and Miller. McCort would get crushed in the upper weights. Randomly picked Bellarmine, dual rank 58th by wrestlestat, and Duke who we know pretty well, dual ranked 69th. McCorts studs are rolling in both of these duals. Very subjective for the results column. Would be interested to see anyone else's take.

Singleton?

He was a huge 174 this year. Maybe is moving up and bumping Fishback out of that 184 spot. I guess Fishback isn't interested in going up to 197 in that scenario.

Wrestlestat

Wrestlestat is factored into the seeding at some point. Not sure where or how. Best overall results would lean Hip at 157 with wins over # 8 and #21 and Scott, while Scott's best win is Evans (next best is #37) and Evans best win is Hip (next best is #29). Neither of them beat anyone noteworthy. Hip as the #1 makes sense to me.

PITT Matchup

125: Ventresca vs Babin - Babin's best position is on top. He gave Robinson from NCST really tough ride. Eddie needs to be aggressive in neutral and control the match there. 3-0 VT 133: McGonagle vs Chappell - Pitt's backup here with Santaniello being out with injury. Chappell isn't bad though lost a 4-1 DEC to Oakley from UNC. McGonagle in the form we've seen him recently should cruise. 7-0 VT 141: Latona vs Santaniello - Younger of the Santaniello brothers here. He's better than his record/ranking shows. Sam will need solid attacks and quick finishes. 10-0 149: Henson vs Solomon - 3rd matchup between these two. Henson won 8-6 and 8-1 last year. Solomon is a pretty solid wrestler, but obviously the Caleb we saw last week is on a very different level. Going with a major here but more is possible for Henson. 14-0 157: Hipolito vs Evans - should be a good match here. Evans has been really solid in his first year starting and Hips first match in almost a month. If Raf is fully back it shouldn't be a problem. Going decision but more is possible if Hip wrestles well. 17-0 165: Church vs Keslar - Really close when looking at wrestlestat. Need Mac to be a little more aggressive on offense. It's a really big last two weeks for Church. Chance to get the 3 seed and be opposite Garvin at ACCs. Losses will drop him to 5/6. I'll take Mac in a close one but could go either way. 20-0 174: Wolak vs Augustine - Another interesting match. Wolak has beaten him twice in the past but the last one came at 2023 NCAAs. If there was a time to start boosting his stock and getting hot, this is it. I'm going to go Pitt here. 20-3 184: Stewart vs Heller - Big one for ACC seeding. Wins in the next two weeks could jump TJ up to the #1 seed and setup a rematch with Kane in the semi's. If TJ is fully back on track I like him here, but Heller has been really good this year. Big key is not letting Heller get funky. TJ avoided it last year and won in SV. It's going to be close, but I'm hopeful this is the next step on TJ's rise back up to the top. 23-3 197: Smith vs Stout - Two months ago I would've picked Andy here but Stout has been really good and Andy has had a rough second half of the season. Likely will decide the #1 seed at ACCs, which would avoid Stemmet, but I think Andy wins that rematch anyway so not a huge deal. Being the 2 seed would give an opportunity for some bonus. 23-6 285: Mullen vs Pitzer - should be a pretty fun match. Pitzer hasn't been quite as good this year but is still dangerous definitely in the top position. Jimmy should have the advantage in neutral. This will be a good test because we haven't really seen how Jimmy stacks up with the 10-20ish ranked guys yet. 26-6 VT

Wrestlestat Agrees With You

They have it at 19-12 currently. That's including a weird Mullen over Trumble result, so I'll say 16-15. NCST pulling the redshirt on Ryan Jack would make it even closer and probably flip it to NCST being favored. We have bonus possibilities at 141 (without Jack), 149, and 197. NCST has bonus possibilities at 125 (Robinson is that good), 157 (Ed Scott can still pin anybody), and 285. If Trumble can almost turn Hendrickson he can turn Jimmy. A healthy McGonagle with Wolak and TJ rounding into form would obviously help quite a bit.

Seidel was impressive

I've seen it mentioned here before, but I don't know if he's a 125 like most of us expected. He looked every bit of 126 and is pretty long. With another year plus until his true freshman year, I would be surprised if he doesn't grow into a 133. Either way he's a total stud. We have a great mix of styles in the 25 class. Seidel and Gorman get after it on offense while it seems like Gaj and Burton use great positioning and counter offense a little bit more. Really am hoping Burton and Gage Wright naturally separate themselves weight wise because both are so freaking good.

I only went to top 50ish for the other programs

They had a few more from 50-100 I think, but the list was getting pretty long.

U20's and U23's This Weekend on Flo

Trying to list everyone, but let me know if someone slipped through. U20 Competitors: 57KG Aaron Seidel (Commit) 70KG Collin Gaj (Commit) 125KG Jimmy Mullen Jimmy is sitting in the finals. Mostly the same group of guys as the US Open except the huge addition of Ben Kueter from Iowa. It will be really interesting if that ends up being the best 2 out of 3 finals match up. The finals will be Saturday from 4pm-7pm U23 Competitors: 65KG Hunter Mason 70KG Tom Crook 74KG Bryce Andonian 79KG Ty Finn 86KG Sam Fisher 97KG Andy Smith Obviously will be great to get to watch BA compete again and up at ~163lbs. I think his biggest competition will come from Ryder Downey and Hunter Garvin unless I'm overlooking someone. Good to see Sam Fisher back on the mat. I think Freestyle is his best form of wrestling too. Main comp will be Fishback (NCST), Hawks (MIZZ), and Heller (PITT). Hoping for Andy Smith to continue his momentum from NCAAs. His main comp will be Stemmet (STAN). 97KG is a little light so Andy should have a great shot of making the team. First few rounds will be Saturday afternoon, and quarterfinals and on will be Sunday 10AM-3:30PM.

Flo Updated 2024 Big Board

Gage Wright #10 Dillon Campbell #49 Matthew Henrich #70 Parker Ferrell #96 Really solid class that fills some future holes. I think Henrich is underrated. There aren't a ton of 2x Jersey state champs walking around. I don't have Rokfin or I would add Willie's rankings in too. Other ACC Notables (Stanford has a massive class): #8 Aden Valencia - Stanford #19 Luke Simcox - UNC #24 Jack Consiglio - Stanford #34 Grigor Cholakyan - Stanford #36 Max Shulaw - UVA #41 Laird Root - UNC #43 Louie Gill - NCST #44 Collin Guffey - Stanford #45 Jason Mara - Stanford #46 Ethan Parco - Stanford #47 Cole Han-Lindemyer - Stanford

Torres

Is actually going 74KG. He looks big. He might be a good option to spell Brady at 165 this year while redshirting.

Sonny Sasso

I'm seeing him at 92KG on Flo's listings. Biggest competition there will be Connor Mirasola who just beat David McFadden at the Trials. He also had a takedown and a very impressive match with Aaron Brooks.

Team JB

MM was pushing the edge of dirty the entire match. I don’t blame JB for the shove at the end.

True

Maybe it's just for the pay day. I would assume Iowa or Michigan will hand out quite a bit of money for an almost surefire AA.

Kaleb Larkin

Kaleb Larkin is the real deal for ASU. 7 seed at 65KG in the Olympic Team Trials today. Had to bump Parco out in combo with Teemer if Parco wanted to go up. Larkin, Van Ness, and Lovett will provide some really stiff competition for Caleb this upcoming year. Can't wait.

My Take

Only guesses here, but I think the weight cut stole some strength from Sam this year. It looked very similar to his 21-22 season at 125 (not quite as extreme). A lot of inconsistent results from somebody that has proved to be consistent when weight wasn't as big of an issue. With a full offseason of training and eating I don't think the jump to 141 is to much, just like the jump from 125 to 133 went smooth in 22-23. I think McGonagle only wrestled some this year at 141 because Crookham beat him out at 133. Small side note that may be swaying some opinions too is that McGonagle beat Sam this year.

Those 4 plus Eddie

Could be the start of a pretty damn good dual team. I hope they can all graduate as Hokies if they decide to move on.

Previous Week

I just saw that the takedown of the conference tournament week was Lennie Wolak. Our backend next year is going to be insanely offensive. Wolak, TJ, Sonny (maybe), Mullen (maybe). That could be very fun to watch.

He also said (via Frayer)

That Caleb's injury was a little more serious then we even knew. It makes his run to the Natty even more impressive.

Sam

I'm intrigued with Latona at 141. This year seemed to mirror his last year at 125. I don't think the cut was as brutal, but there seemed to be something going on. Could've been an injury. He was flexing his knee quite a bit by the end of the year. I would love to see him eat and lift into 141 and not worry about the weight grind as much. With that being said, nobody knows as much about his body as Sam and the coaching/training staff so they'll figure out the best fit for him.

good to hear

I assume we would love a 133/141 and a 157/165. With Latona and Hip filling whatever weights they want. We obviously have to pay up for our returning stars like Caleb and TJ, but with Bryce and Khi being done we should have quite a bit of leftovers for two starters if they're the right fit.

Has he officially signed yet?

Makes me a little nervous with all the $$ getting thrown around for transfers. I know high schoolers aren't getting that type of money, but if one of these big money programs has extra cash to burn and a hole at 174/184 you gotta think they're contacting him.

Agreed

In my opinion it's illogical that these two situations end up being the same score differential: Wrestler A gets a takedown, wrestler B gets an escape = 3-1 Wrestler A gets a takedown, wrestler B gets a reversal, wrestler A gets an escape = 4-2... A score of 4-3 makes much more sense after this sequence. I guess riding time can factor in here, but a lot of the time it doesn't like in your example.

Agreed

The one point Askren made is there is a reason the guy on top rarely improves his position from there. Because they don't really have control. Gotta break that lock for it to be a takedown. Caleb got screwed there, but he obviously got the last laugh in a monumental way.

Slight disagree here

I think 3-4 takedowns to 0, barring back points, is plenty for a bonus point.

Camacho and Trephan

Based off seeds NCS should've had a quarter finalist at 125 and 285 also. So they're 5/7

AA Paths

125: Flynn: #5 seed Volk- tough but Cooper can beat him. Would have winner of Provo (already beat him) and McCrone (beatable). He would have the loser of Barnett/Smith in the blood round which is very tough. Hope he makes it there. 133: Latona: Zaccone first which is beatable. Van Dee next most likely. Hes good that will be really tough. Sam really needs to keep his ankles clear after getting to the leg. He's getting tied up so much after good initial shots. He's also limping a bit. Would have Frost from Iowa St. if he makes it through. Not the worst path. 141: Crook: as other have stated he has a really nice path. 30 seed Owen first. Then the winner of 21 Edmond (already beat him this year) and 22 Composto. Then most likely gets 26 seed Vombaur in the blood round. Let's go Tampa Tom 149: Henson has #5 Watters in the quarters. Majored him earlier this year but Watters is wrestling really well and Henson doesn't seem 100%. Loser of that will get the winner of Bond/Cetta/Abas/Tyus in the blood round. Very winnable. 157: Bryce has Ed Scott. Maybe he can turn the tables. I think Bryce looked better yesterday than he did at ACCs. Loser of that gets the winner of Swenson/Wilcox/Kellar/Chumbley. All winnable to make AA. 174: Khi obviously vs Carter. Time to get his revenge. Loser here gets the winner of Murphy/Kennedy/Cramer/Faison. Murphy/Kennedy are good wrestlers that won't be an easy blood round win. 184: TJ gets Salazar who I dont think has looked great. He's very big too so maybe getting him off the scale will be good. TJ has a significant athletic advantage. Loser of that gets the winner of Foca/Ayzerov/Kane/Bullock. Foca/Ayzerov/Bullock are all really good that will be a very hard blood round. 197: Andy has Urbas first. Tall good rider. That won't be easy. Next would have the winner of Stemmet and Stout. Also would be a tough win. If he makes it through there he would have the loser of Elam/Beard. That's nasty. 285: Catka has Hill from Iowa then winner of Szuba/Griess. If he survives that he gets loser of Elam/Hendrickson. Not easy.

The Wrestling Nomad On Twitter

Already tried to post this once and it failed but i'll keep it short. Caleb beats Parco and Arrington in the matrix they use for seeding. CKLV where he outplaced them both and beat Parco is huge. Hope the seeding holds up because the 2/3 will be much better for Caleb than the 4. Here's the matrix Nomad posted of Caleb vs Arrington.

Path to Victory

Obviously some things need to go our way to pull the upset. We need a combo of us wrestling slightly above seed, NCST wrestling slightly below seed, and some big swing matches with Pitt vs NCST. Here's a path that isn't outlandish (I used the interactive bracket posted on intermat forums): 125: Champ - Camacho +1 Bonus, 2nd - Flynn ---- NCST 13, VT 9 133: Champ - Orine +1 Bonus, 2nd - Latona +1.5 Bonus ---- NCST 26, VT 19.5 141: Champ - Matthews, 2nd - Jack, 4th Crook +2.5 Bonus ---- NCST 35, VT 25.5 149: Champ - Henson +1 Bonus, 2nd - Arrington +1 Bonus ---- NCST 45, VT 38.5 157: Champ - Andonian +3 Bonus, 3rd - Scott +2 Bonus ---- NCST 51.5, VT 52.5 --- This is obviously a massive swing 165: Champ - Heller, 2nd - Fields, 3rd - Brady +2 Bonus ---- NCST 60.5, VT 60 --- Extra room for bonus depending on round 1 174: Champ - Lewis +1 Bonus, DNP - Faison ---- NCST 60.5, VT 73 --- R1 match b/w Pitt and NCST is huge 184: Champ - Stewart, 3rd Fishback +1.5 Bonus --- NCST 69, VT 85 --- R2 match b/w Pitt and NCST is huge 197: Champ - Hidlay +3 Bonus, 2nd - Smith ---- NCST 84, VT 94 285: Champ - Trephan, 2nd - H Catka ---- NCST 96, VT 103 Upsets by seeds: Andonian over Scott and Santiago, Heller over Fields, Augustine over Faison. Not my predictions, just trying to show how little flipping the team scores actually takes. What do you guys think?

1 and 2 seeds

They do get a championship advancement point for the first round. 3-6 still does have an opportunity to achieve bonus in the first round though. So definitely a small advantage to be the 3 vs the 2 if the 3 can take advantage of it. It gets multiplied a bit when Duke is as bad as they are this year.

Last Year

Duke didn't have an entry at 174 last year. Pre seeds show the 6 seed at 174 as "Open". I ran through team scores last year to double check. Pitt's Luca Augustine was the 3 seed and track wrestling shows him winning by forfeit. I scored it as a Fall and ended up calculating Pitt's team score exactly.

125: Camacho Flynn Moore Montaperto Agin Camacho 133: Orine Yarborough Latona Santaniello Palmer Adams 141 Matthews Jack Crook McNeil Gioffre Colman 149 Henson Arrington Scott Solomon Gioffre Papcsy 157: Santiago (I missed this one) Scott Andonian Keslar Cedeno Ferrero 165: Fields (this hurts) Heller Brady Hamilton Estrada Console 174: Lewis McCoy Eischens Faison Augustine 184: Stewart Heller Fishback Kane Weatherspoon Becker 197: Hidlay Smith (nice) Shaw Stout Kinsey Bonsu 285: Trephan H Catka R Catka Pitzer Barket Lautt

My Guesses:

Flynn 2 Latona 3 Crook 3 Henson 1 Andonian 2 Brady 2 Mekhi 1 Stewart 1 Smith 3 Catka 2 Questionable ones are 165, 184, 197, 285 165 top 3 guys, Fields, Heller, Brady, all beat each other. National Rankings (Intermat/Flo) have Heller at 14/14, Brady at 21/16, and Fields at 22/17. 184 - Stewart beat Fishback and Heller but lost to Kane. Does Stewart get penalized for only wrestling a partial season? I dont think so. I would go Stewart, Heller, Fishback, Kane here 197- Battle for 2-4 seeds here. Shaw beat Stout, Smith was out vs Pitt, Smith beat Shaw. All of them got tech'd by Hidlay. National rankings have it Stout, Shaw, Smith. I think that's what they get seeded. #3 seed is the best here because that Duke wrestler gives up Techs and Pins to everyone. 285- Kind of a weird one here with Pitzer not wrestling any ACC duals. I think the difference between this and 157 and Bryce is the Hunter is a top 20 guy that you cant automatically slide Pitzer in front of, and 157 doesn't really have anyone like that. I think I would go Trephan, Catka, Pitzer here. But Hunter being the 3 wouldn't be the worst thing either so he can get bonus in round one.

I think you're right

Not sure where EA is getting 6 from lol still impressive though!
