I wonder if a non NCAA college football organization could end up…
like the old AFL and NFL in the late 60s when they only played one another in preseason or the Super Bowl. The Big Ten could add 2 more schools to have 4 five team divisions and the SEC to add 4 teams to make their 4 five team divisions. The Big 20 could just play one another and have their own championship. The SEC could do the same. And then the Big 20 champ plays the SEC champ in the CFB Super Bowl.
The Big 20 could neatly have 4 divisions by adding UVa and UNC to join PSU, UMCP and Rutgers in the East. OSU, MSU, UM, IU and Purdue in the Midwest. NW, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minn to the Central. And Nebraska, USC, UCLA, Oregon and UW for the west. A Big 24 with 4 6-team divisions could add Syracuse or Pitt to the east, shift NW to the Midwest, shift Nebraska and add Kansas to the Central, and add Stanford and Cal to the west.
The SEC-20 might not be as neat because they need 4. But a potential Big 12 exclusive version could be FSU, Clemson, GT, USC-e and NCSU in the Coastal. UF, UGa, UTenn, Vandy and UK in the East. Bama, Auburn, Ole Miss, MSU and LSU in the Deep South. And aTm, UTex, OU, Ark and Mizzou in the west. A SEC-24 with 4 6-team divisions could shift USC-e to the East, remove USC-e and add WVU and VT to the Coastal, add Ark to the Deep South, and shift Ark out and add TT and Ok St to the west.
Every team plays only within their conference much like the old MLB until the 2 conference champions play in the CFB Super Bowl. Each division plays one another every year and they play 2 teams from the other 3 divisions every 3 years if they are 24 team conferences.
I hate what college football is now, but if they can get back to more regional divisions it might be salvageable. I would miss a lot of the G5 and left out power schools though.

You’ might care when the ACC implodes and the ND leach starts…
searching for the next power conference to suck the blood out of and to house their other non-football sports. That conference won’t be the Big 18 or $EC. Hopefully they’ll go crawling back into the Big East hole. But if not, the Big 12 might look appealing to them. And at first it looks like a great move because ND will make it seem like they’re a good partner until you find out they’re not.

Sure
They could be good in non revs in any conference just as long as they aren’t in the same conference with my Hokies. I couldn’t care less about what ND brings to the ACC in non rev sports unless they joined full time with football. And don’t worry, their non rev athletes will be fine without a conference. ND has the cash. That said, their success in non rev sports is inconsequential in my argument. From “your own” data the ACC has 8 other schools in the top 25 in the directors cup. ND can go away and the ACC would still be fine for those who really care about field hockey. I just don’t want ND in a comfy bed here in the ACC.
It’s just 10 + another 12 years of being aligned with those leaches that irritates me. You have to admit the hypocrisy and double standards that they embody. If you’re OK with that, you can go on loving ND. But in the words of Robert Bruce to his father… “my hate will die with you” when I speak of ND in any conference with Tech as a partial member.

If Pitt only had real estate available for on-campus stadium…
Pitt has a proud football history and might get left in the dust. I’m not a Pitt fan but this will sadden me to see them left behind.
Miami is the same thing but will be OK because they become relevant every 20 years. They don’t need fans, they just have money.

You don't understand my argument (look at my thread here)
My argument is simple. ND join the ACC in football. If not, leave the ACC in all other sports and become independent. My point is about football but aLao about all their other sports. Not sure I understand why data is needed but your data proves they’re good enough to stand alone in ALL sports. I never said ND stunk in non-rev sports but I did say “if they think they’re all that” which it looks like they are, then they should leave the ACC and be independent in all sports. I don’t think you understand what my argument is.
If you want some data, go back to the 60s, 70s and 80s and see how ND thrived as an independent in all sports. They can do this again and I would gladly support them.

I think it’s evolving that way naturally…
But ND’s proclivity to parasitic tendencies is at the center of their core. They refuse to be left alone for all their other non football sports and they will just find a power adjacent conference to wheel and deal and make special demands to benefit their football team while remaining independent. I just hope Tech isn’t in that conference when the dust settles.

Well…
Where did the hints come from ? ND
When? All the time since 1994-ish
Who made them? ND
ND has a hundreds of root cellars with carrots they use to dangle in front of Big East and ACC commissioners as well as the NCAA. To this day Mike Tranghese won’t eat carrots.

You did prove my point… ND is strong enough to go independent ..
in ALL sports. They can leave now.
I never said they were horrible… they just need to be all in including football or leave altogether. Leaches.

In time… a hungry JMU type school will knock off a big boy…
In that kind of playoff setup. A 1 seed losing to a 12 seed in college football seems way more likely of an occurrence than a 1 seed losing to a 16 seed in basketball. Of course any 12 seed would have to win that first round before getting to that 1 seed. What about ranking a FCS school like NDSU in the FBS rankings? I often feel some FCS schools like NDSU and Montana are better than some of the lower ranked FBS schools. Plus some FCS schools would be breathing a sigh of relief because they wouldn’t have to plat NDSU in a title game.

Call your AD to see if he agrees with me😂😂😂
That’s rich Terry. I’d love to talk to Peetie Boy just to tell him the same thing I’ve been unloading on you. I would stand strong in the stance that ND should be independent in ALL sports if it’s that important to them in football. Stop picking and choosing and leaching off conferences like the Big East and ACC for your other sports. And stop your *****ing about the ACC when your football team doesn’t get supported like full time member Miami did (a team who beat ND head to head). Please tell us why again the ACC should ever promote ND football over any of its true football members?
In the voice of Adam Sandler…. You’re wrong TerryD.

To that point, I’ll be the first to ***** when the ACC schedules us to have 4 straight away games to Cal, BC Miami and then SMU ha ha ha.

Whoa! Wait! ND only cares about football independence?
I had NO CLUE😂. Terry… I think my non sports loving daughter even knows this. ND cries so much about it my dead great great grandfather probably hears about it in his grave.
I STRONGLY feel that if ND holds football independence so dear, then they should hold independence for ALL sports dear. Otherwise you’re just what you are… hypocrites. The honorable thing for ND to do is to leave the ACC in all other sports since we’re such a bad conference for you. I bet ND can work out a similar deal with the SEC and Big Ten that they have with the ACC right?
Conference Realignment Board
6 mo ago
I know that’s true…
but how fun would it be to be in a conference that cared about football and whose fans actually showed up to games? I do get excited about away games at Chesnut Hill, Duke and Wake Forest. Im equally pumped up looking into the stands at Miami and Pitt but at least they have football pedigree. Syracuse is OK when they have a winning program and give that private school a pass.
But you’re right in that the GoR protected the ACC but it also locked Tech and many other large state universities in with some schools who are lucky to be called a power conference school.
Conference Realignment Board

The next ACC commissioner (assuming time doesn’t run out)…
should be a huge ACC homer who isn’t a alumnus of UNC, Duke or Wake. Someone who has Mark Packer, Cory Alexander or Debbie Antonelli’s love for the conference but with business acumen. But someone who is a football first thinker. Either that or a shrewd businessman who hates losing and thinks they can legitimately play ball with the big boy P2s.
No matter who the next commissioner is, they have a tough hill t climb with all the private schools and schools with small footprints within their own states and the weird dysfunction of Cal, Stanford, SMU and a partial member in ND.
If not for that dumb GoR, a business savvy commissioner could propose a new super conference with Miami, FSU, GT, Clemson, NCSU, UNC, UVa, Tech, Pitt, West Virginia, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Kansas, Iowa State, Colorado, Utah, BYU, Arizona, ASU, Cal, Stanford, WSU, Oregon State and BSU. Mostly big state schools minus Miami, BYU and Stanford that could consist of five 5-team divisions.
All that said, I really miss the old days of 8 t 10 member conferences.

Come on!!! Go all in independent. “Independence” is ND’s cornerstone….
Bite the bullet and start a movement at ND to go all in for independence for ALL sports. ND doesn’t need anyone. They can stand alone without any conference support for basketball and all their low to non-revenue generating olympic sports. ND is THAT great, right? You all did this in the 70s and 80s and before and seemed OK with that. You can do it again living like Kelly Tripucka. TerryD… you could be the one who started the movement.
The status quo here feels weak and like ND is giving up on the true meaning of independence. If not, then maybe your SEC allies can take ND in the same arrangement that the Big East and ACC did. Do you think the SEC would take a bite like those idiot ACC schools? If not, then you might have no allies except for maybe the ACC who let you all partially into the conference so you could have a nice landing spot for your other DEPENDENT sports.
Conference Realignment Board
6 mo ago
Correction… ND is ND’s only real ally re: independence.
The SEC is gaming ND much the way ND games everyone else. It’s the whole the enemy of my enemy is my friend thing and ND is pretty much everyone’s enemy because of their elitist and obnoxious behavior.
BTW… ND needs to go independent in ALL sports if independence is so important. Otherwise they should join the ACC in football. If they simply can’t, the noble thing for ND would be to leave the ACC and be independent in all sports. No one ever talks about this.

NIL
NIL has caught the SEC by surprise.
NIL and transfer portal restrictions or regulations used to be the talk of the poorer power schools and G5 schools. It’s a matter of time before the SEC makes regulation talk a reality. The SEC will find a way to work it out so there is a cap while somehow capturing the cream of the crop in order to return back to dominance. 3 years of non SEC champs simply cannot stand.
Either that or the pollsters will just make sure to rank 8 SEC schools in the top 10 to saturate the playoff field even more because 5 just wasn’t enough to move the needle in 2025.

Better yet…
What would the Hoo’s record have been had they played the entirety of Tech’s schedule? Tech’s opponents had a combined .639 winning percentage making our schedule the toughest in the conference along with playing 2 10-win, 3 9-win, 2 8-win, 2 7-win teams of which 4 were ranked top 25 at the end of regular season.
UVa’s opponents had a .493 winning percentage and one of the easiest schedules of the ACC schools with only 3 8-win teams and 2 7-win teams with no one with 9 or more wins and no teams finishing in the top 25 regular season and they lost to one 8-win team (Wake) and loss to one other 7-win team (NCSU). I think if UVa had Tech’s schedule, they would have gone 7-5 with losses to Vandy, Miami, NC State (who they lost to anyway), Wake (who they lost to anyway) and probably GT. But watching them this year and their luck, they may have stolen one or 2 of those to go as good as 9-3. Still impressive for a football program who have had only 5 winning seasons in the last 20-years and within what turned out to be a pretty good ACC.
Don’t fret though…. Tech is about to take back our rightful place after many crappy years. BTW our crappy years since 2016 had almost as many winning seasons as UVa’s last 20 for comparison. We had 14 winning seasons over the last 20 years. But I’ll tip my hat to them this year.

And they have good money going into that program with their school’s….
High student athletic fees that separates them from many other SBC and G5 schools. ODU has a similar setup and can’t help but notice they won 10 games this year.

There you go. Similar to what Maroon Baboon just said recently…
Rabid fans, fans with football knowledge, interest for televised games, football first schools and tradition are all out the window now. I never thought I’d see the day where Indiana and Vandy would have the top guys for the Heisman and a school like SMU be relevant in a power conference so quickly. To a lesser extent…. a school like JMU (deserving or not) go from FCS to CFP in just 3 short years.

I think if you look at some past posts of mine…
On multiple boards which hadn’t been many for the past many years but a few more these past few weeks, I think you’ll realize “enamored” isn’t quite the right word. UVa had a good team this year and just owning up to it but I also poked fun at their weak schedule. They were good twice in the last 20 years if that makes you feel any better
Conference Realignment Board
7 mo ago
I hate admitting this…
But UVa had a 11-win football team in what turned out to be a good ACC. Granted they had one of the weaker schedules in the ACC, but still an impressive feat. And Duke played a tough schedule it turned out because Illinois, Tulane, UConn, UVa and GT all turned out to be good teams this year. After saying all this, I feel like I need to vomit.
Conference Realignment Board
7 mo ago
Luckily for the SEC….
They can win CFP games by saturating the field with all of their 9-win or better schools so that a school like Bama can get a win over another SEC school but call it a “CFP” win.
NIL for those schools who have money (Miami, UVa, SMU) is proving to be a thorn in the SEC’s side. If Stanford and Duke really wanted to, they could be really good in football. Non-football schools like Indiana, UVa, Illinois and Vandy are testaments to this. I would put UNC in this category but I’ve never seen a school infuse more cash into coaches and land 4 and 5 star players over the past 30+ years only to have one really good season in 1997. I have hope that UNC will continue to fail.

We’ve had the TV on with bowl game noise in the background…
but couldn’t tell you what was going on in any of those games outside of Miami’s playoff games and the UVa bowl game. I didn’t even pay attention to the GT or Clemson bowl games. These games are just hard to watch with teams with depleted rosters that are a shell of what their regular season roster had.
If the NCAA could lock the portal until after bowl season, limit player transfers to 2 or less transfers within 5 years, and only allow 5 calendar years for eligibility, that might make these greedy and fickle “college” athletes think twice before hopping around. And NIL needs some serious regulation, and I loathe government oversight and intervention as a general rule. NCAA sports have become unrecognizable in the past 10 years and I lose interest more each year.
Conference Realignment Board

That’s always been the case with bowls…
Nothing against UVa, but Tech was well known for traveling when we were good and still got 2nd to 3rd pick in many bowl allocations back in the BCS era. Not that it’s right, but UVa always had issues with fan turnout compared to other big schools and that never helped you all.
As for basketball, you really can’t spell VirgiNIaTech without NIT.
Conference Realignment Board

If they ever need a lesson in understanding how it feels to get the shaft…
from being excluded from higher level bowls, higher rankings or tournament invites, Tech could give them some good pointers. If I’m not mistaken, I believe the Irish screwed us over on a few bowls that should have been ours back in the day. We whined just like they did this year. The big difference was no one heard us or cared ha ha ha.
My favorite is still the year we beat Wake Forest twice in basketball and had the better record during the Greenberg days, and the selection committee invited Wake to the dance and we went to the NIT with them citing it was Wake’s body of work that got them in.
My 2nd favorite was in 2000 when a top 10 Michael Vick 10-1 team was passed up for the Fiesta Bowl in favor for the lower ranked 9-2 Notre Dame. We destroyed Clemson in the lower tiered Gator Bowl and watched Oregon State take ND to the woodshed.
There are so many more examples as we Hokies know.

OK, I have to pick on you a bit here…
Miami had the 3rd weakest regular season schedule in the ACC (15th out of 17 reams) with their opponent’s winning percentage at .479 compared to Duke's opponent’s ,611 and Tech’s opponent’s .639 (Tech had the strongest ACC schedule FWIW but we still would have stunk with Miami’s weak schedule). Only Cal and Clemson had weaker schedules than Miami in the ACC.
Had UVa beaten Duke in the ACCCG, many could be saying the same about UVa’s weak regular season schedule as the #10 seed in the CFP. UVa’s regular season opponent’s winning percentage was .493 which was 13th in the ACC. Only GT, Miami, Cal and Clemson had weaker schedules.
Miami still deserves to be there and UVa would have too if they beat Duke. BTW OSU had a .528 opponent’s record and played #13 Texas and #18 Michigan as their only 2 top 25 opponents not counting #1 Indiana in the B10CG. Miami played only #11 Notre Dame as their only top 25 opponent. UVa played zero top 25 opponents as reflected in the final ranking but will note that FSU and Louisville were ranked at the time UVa played them. ND who pleaded that they should be in the CFP had a ,521 opponent’s winning percentage and played #7 aTm, #10 Miami and #16 USC.
So I wouldn’t cast too many stones at OSU given the facts presented

I would have liked to see a TT v Miami championship game…
but it’s not meant to be. I guess I’m pulling for Miami to win it all now and could care less which SEC or Big Ten school is there to play them. That said, how gross is it to root for scUM? I need to eat some soap. I would have pulled for TT over Miami had they played. I don’t particularly pull for most ACC schools outside of Tech of course, Clemson, NCSU and begrudgingly GT, Pitt, SU and BC

Oregon was winning 48-13 mid way through the 3rd quarter…
and called off the dogs to keep their players healthy for the game that mattered. JMU’s 21 points late in the 3rd and 4th quarters were true trash points. If that were a regular season game, Oregon would have wanted more style points and hit 70+ on them. Oregon came prepared today and had a nice practice game against a JMU team who didn’t belong there. If JMU played Texas Tech, they would have gotten worked there too.
Texas Tech belonged. ND belonged. BYU belonged. Alabama was the outlier but can see where they could have been the 12th seed. JMU and Tulane did not belong. JMU’s one loss was to a middle of the pack ACC school in Louisville. Yes I get it, JMU could have beaten Virginia Tech given the opportunity but they would have been 7-5 or 8-4 at best in the ACC even with UVa’s easy schedule. Tulane was crushed by Ole Miss (regular season) and crushed by UTSA but did beat the ACC champs but they didn’t deserve to be there either. Bama or Vandy were deserving of the 12th spot but would give the nod to Bama since they beat Vandy head-to-head. Had UVa won the ACCCG, both Alabama and Vandy should have been left out with UVa as the #12. It would have been gross too especially since they played the weakest possible ACC schedule that the conference had to offer. But a 11-2 UVa Power conference champion should have gotten in over Bama or Vandy.
Unfortunately the CFP has the “everybody gets a trophy clause” thus a few trashcan programs get to sneak in every year. I was OK with Boise State getting in last year but it turned out they weren’t at the CFP level.

I see UVa at 26 but not sure how much a drop that is
I’ll just find it interesting if UVa dropped less than we gained especially since we have a slightly better overall record by 0.5 games and honestly can’t see where UVa’s SOS is that much stronger when looking at their opponents and opponents records versus what Tech has played against.
Not saying we should be 26th but definitely don’t think UVa belongs there. If life were fair I could see Tech and UVa neck and neck in the upper 30s to lower 40s.

Listed athlete heights always seem exaggerated….
I remember thinking if JRob was listed as 6’-1” that he is probably 5’-10” in reality. My 5’-9” son has a picture with he and JRob and he looked about 4” shorter which surprised me but probably should have believed the data. I guess small guards just look smaller when you have a 6’-9” point guard playing alongside of you as is the case with Hammond

1998 was rough…
Lost 3 games by a total of 10 points combined, 2 games where SU and UVa won in the last minute and Temple where we failed to score in the last minute with backup QB and future safety Nick Sorensen. We were 10 points and 3 minutes from being undefeated that year. It was actually a very good team but lacked Michael Vick.
