Are we satisfied with the upper weight development?
It seems to be lacking.

The last VT AA for 197 and 285 was Haught (2018) and Walz (2017)
The last round of 12 finisher is Smith and Catka in 2024

Walz was a 3 time AA. There was also Chris Penny who made a run.
I think they are good....we will see!

I personally have had enough of this nonsense.
Its November. The guys you are talking about are sophomores. They are good, let em go! And Haught, as a reminder, was a 3 time All American. And all he did was get better til he wrestled on Saturday night. Upper weights, imo, are the absolute hardest to wrestle at...they are good to go!

Nonsense? How did Mullen close the year? What about Catka?

I would like to be wrong. I hope they have a great year. I just want the
team to succeed.

I'm not hitting the panic button yet. Mullen absolutely looked like he can beat Hopke- he wrestled dumb. But we need to see clear improvement from Sasso and Mullen this year, and the open wasn't a good start.

I picked him to do that just a week ago
Big fan of Jimmy. Just didn't like how he wrestled in that loss, and really didn't like how Sasso looked.

Sasso was a kid with high upside once he focused on wrestling
I think we are still seeing a lack of consistency from him and I am hoping it clicks soon for him to take another step forward. Mullen, however, came in highly regarded and yes, he did play football for a while at VT, he was very accomplished on the mat and should be doing better with getting results.

We use the football crutch with Sasso a bit too much as well IMO
He played football but he also had a full freestyle season and he was no stranger to the mat. He had seen high level competition prior to VT, he has a win over one of the Mirasolas if I'm not mistaken.

It is lacking. We've recruited very well and have little to nothing to
show for it

I think this is the year we need to do something about it
If Sasso and Mullen both don't get close to the podium we will have to do something. The natural talent is there.

Nope
I've been in wait and see mode. I thought Andy developed well, but was athletically limited. Catka was a big recruit though. Was his career a one off of bad luck or a knock against our coaching? We've got the talent now. If Sasso and Mullen don't develop, it'll be hard to deny there's an issue.

This is something I’ve tried to bring up for the last 2 years…
I’m not seeing the development in the upper weights. I think we’re getting the talent. Andy Smith was the exception, was not a marquee, recruit and developed well. However, we need to see our blue chippers in the upper weights progress. And we really haven’t to date.
