I just finished watching Caleb’s match and have little wrestling knowledge:
Someone please explain why he would not take bottom for the escape point. And then he just gave Lovett his escape point?? He lost 1-0. Makes no sense to me. Was rooting hard for him. Go Hokies!

Even if Henson got out, he still would need a TD to win. Thought is that he’d have 2 full minutes to get a TD. There’s no guarantee it would have went to OT. And if the match ended OT with no score, the 2 30 second ride outs are Lovett’s advantage.
So the coaches and Henson strategized that to beat Lovett, Henson needed a TD in regulation. They believed in his ability and he almost had it.
I agree with the coaches strategy there.

Involved getting a takedown. He was committing time/energy to that pursuit.

Most people don't go underneath Lovett. Caleb is also very good on top but he thought he had a better chance of getting a TD than a rideout. He was in on his legs a few times and had momentum so it made sense IMO just didn't work out.
