Beginning to be concerned. Mike Young has been able to bring in 3 transfer.
In the same time CMD has none. Nada. She was able to keep the holdovers. That’s a very important part of her recruiting. But she was able to work on them during the non-contact period. Doesn’t appear that she has been able to bring in any former players or former recruits. Is she just on a batting slump?

Duffy has had to move, rebuild her entire coaching staff from the bottom up
get paraded around to shake hands and kiss babies, keep the current committed players, well…committed, scour the portal, reach out to her HS commits at Marquette, review players that had been offered by the former staff to assess whether they fit into her coaching philosophy/strategy and should be re-offered scholarships, offer new players scholarships, and actually coach practice…who would’ve thought…yeah, I’m getting really concerned.

Blacksburg. The process is more than just offering a scholarship. There are a lot of factors and intangibles involved for the athlete to make the decision. If they like the campus, lifestyle, academics, Cassell, the locker room, weight room, etc. What VT's NIL will offer them. Meeting the current athletes on the team if they like each other and would get along. If the athlete likes the new coaching staff.
The athletes (and their parents) will be comparing VT versus other schools they are considering. We're not the big name school like Uconn, Texas, Tenn, LSU, SC-e, SC-w, Stanford, etc, who have won NC's, so we're not going to get big name athletes. They could be making decisions mid/late May. Take deep breath, patience patience. Glad we're not the head coach.

Kim Marshall has had less time than Duffy and has gotten two pretty decent portal players. Not saying there's reason necessarily to panic here and I'm sure Duffy is working hard to find the RIGHT players to fit with the team, but I don't think it's unreasonable to have had a few portal commitments to this point. The 2024 recruits we locked down are definitely nice and important, but we need experience and it is a little concerning to me that we haven't gotten any. Again, not panicking and not saying she's Failing, but it does make me wonder. There's just other coaches in the same situation that have done a little more.

Shoring up her base and low hanging fruit first. Would love to see her grab
big out of the portal, but admittedly haven’t reviewed the WBB portal that closely. I do like the UK “big” decommit, but again that’s a current HS player.

I said earlier that I was glad she seemed to be focusing on the incoming classes rather than transfers and people jumped on me for suggesting it lol I definitely love the approach, it's just getting that ONE taller player that I think we really need to be even somewhat competitive. Next year is going to be a lot of trial and error, so I'm not expecting too much, but I think we have less of a chance of being competitive if we're relying on Myah for our height. Not that she isn't talented, but a skinny freshman is going to struggle.
(In response to this post by BackInTheBurg)
Agreed. The UK decommit big is SEC size but will be a freshman. Need to
give Rose someone who pushes her and can either spell her, or vice versa.

People coming to VT, IMHO, do want to be here or they would not come. They like the coaches, players, conference, school, place, and the NIL is satisfactory. A lot of players will pick a TN, UConn, ND, etc. just for the name (and possibly big NIL). I like the way we do it, frankly. I want people who WANT to be here.

My point was that the "she's had a lot to do" reasoning doesn't really land for me, because every coach has a lot to do.

But that doesn't really address my other point of getting experience. Again, not worried necessarily, but it does make me tilt my head a little bit.

Granted, their considerations are a big higher stakes than a HS player, but some are connected to Petersen on IG, so maybe a few know each other. Also, there are lots of experienced players in the portal who are sophomores with less experience than our current crop. We actually have some decent minutes (and a lot of talent) with the crew we have. Duffy will know what they can do and what we need - she has been doing workouts with them

My main issue is that we have one player over 6'2 and she's going to be a freshman. Like even if we get one of those sophomores, they've still at least experienced some of the physicality it takes to play at this level. I think Myah is incredibly talented and is going to be really good, but I think relying on her, especially because she's so thin, to be our height isn't exactly ideal. I'd love to get Karlen, but even she is only 6'2 I believe. I'm excited about the players we have and that have committed, but I'm just going to temper my expectations for this year a little unless we get someone with size. Doesn't have to be a huge star, but just someone.

Last year I saw a lot of big players (ex. Baylor had one 6'7" who would be a sophmore now but hardly got ay minutes) who just did not have the chops. I will take a more athletic 6'4" any day of the week. Just look at how Stulke (Iowa) at 6'2"handled a lot of big centers when she had to fill in there. Beers from OSU is considered pretty much the best in the biz now as a post, and she is 6'4". Of course, a *good* player at 6'5"+ (like Strack) is a goldmine. Unfortunately you often have to develop those. But if I had to choose, I would go for skills over height. Maybe we will luck out and find that hidden gem of height and skill and experience somewhere.

The Iowa Centers remind me of lineman that Wisconsin get year in and year
out and on a consistent basis. That’s meant to be a compliment. They just seem to recruit and get commitments from prototypical OTs and OGs, who have great size, hands and feet. Iowa WBB recruits centers similarly. Not undersized by any means, but not Liz Kitley tall. But they are good with the ball around the basket, physical, can pass and screen well, are great in the pick and roll and can finish through contact. Give me that everyday and twice on Sunday.

I'd much rather have athleticism than just a statue under the basket, but I think consistently having your 5 position so undersized at 6'2, especially in the ACC, is going to make sustained success difficult. You said it, an athletic 6'4 is legitimately ideal in my opinion as well, but that's not what we have right now. We have a presumed starter that's 6'2 and a freshman that needs to put on some muscle. So I'm with you, I don't need anyone that's Cardoso out there, but someone that falls in the middle would be great.

But it has been really quiet, and that is alarming. I’m not sure why certain people jump all over any poster that says anything about the FACT, there has been little to no information come out about the portal. I am personally super excited about CMD and the team will be just fine, but it has been very quiet.
