This is craziness
What is the reason to not use two scholarships? Someone needs to ask Kenny. Player evaluation is not a perfect science. Better to get more players. A sleeper may turn out to be a player. Players who you think will be good don't always pan out. And then there are injuries. With the portal its easy to get one year players if you don't want to tie the scholarships up for a few years.

I don't think it is as simple math as that sounds. Everybody on the roster
has a Covid year they may or may not use going forward, so the idea may be to keep a spot or two if someone decides to stick around for the extra year. Heck, I've given up on figuring out what year a player is.

Besides, one ball, 5 spots on the floor, transfer portal, you can't keep that many happy all the time. Somebody may transfer out of the numbers are too high, or a real good player want to transfer in.

Also, do you add a couple of players who will never see the court?
It's one thing to bring in players who will be in the regular rotation in a year or two, but it's another to extend scholarships to players who will never see the court.

Maybe Kenny isn't extending more scholarships because he can't find 5 players who will definitely contribute?

The question is will all three recruits make it to the 1st game?
We've lost recruits to the portal before the season starts each of the last few seasons. Only two of the last two years' recruits was on the roster by the 1st game, and only one became a regular.

Some schools
Bring in top notch academic players for the 14th and 15th spot to raise the team's GPA. This is especially true of the coach has a bonus clause in the contract for a certain level of GPA.

In our case, we don’t need that
We’ve got a high GPA

Help me understand the logic
"Tech has five scholarships available, but Brooks intends to pass out only two or three of them" If the portal is where you are looking and there are one and dones that are available given the previous substantial attrition/ injury history at VT wouldn't you want to fill out the roster if available quality is there? Is it $$$, worry about playing time, integration in team culture?

I’m not sure KB knows how to use more than 8

If he leaves two, he still has 13 scholarship players which is exactly ...
what the men's team has. 15 is too many - don't know if that is a Title IX thing or why there is a difference but with the portal being so active in WCBB I think 15 is too many. Your 14th and 15th players will not stick around anyway. This year we had too few IMHO but that is because we lost some mid year again. 13 is the sweet spot - 11 is too few as we saw when Kitley and King got hurt.

To bad they can't transfer the unused schollies to another sport
I'm sure that the softball, WSoccer, WT&F, and WSwimming teams would love to have a few extra above their NCAA limits

Henrickson didn’t carry 15 scholarship players either. She was usually
around 12 or 13. Her reasoning was that she didn’t have minutes available to play 15 and was stretched finding minutes for 10. I’m sure there are other coaches who feel the same way.

You said exactly what I was thinking, after reading the interview.
Sounds like Kenny wants one "Big"(C/PF) and one Guard. Then "maybe" a stretch forward. We need post players, don't we? We seem to have half as many posts as guards. We need a Big to back up Kitley, but if she can't run the floor, they will likely not play much at the same time. Kitley needs help on the floor, in the paint. Somebody with an attitude. A slightly taller Baptiste clone would be ideal. Baptiste also had a good outside shot, to stretch the floor. I would want a true Center and 2 Forwards, then maybe a guard.

For whatever reason, women's basketball players seem to have more extended injuries than men's basketball players. If you just compare the two VT teams, the difference is jarring. Between the injuries and the quick transfers out, Kenny's teams have been short staffed for his entire stint here. All six seasons. Why not pack the team a bit more, and let the chips fall where they may? The disgruntled will leave anyway.

He doesn't even use walk-ons to get extra insurance in case his
short bench gets depleted.
