More later - But VT wasn't going to host because of graduation
and the lack of hotels. This is what the NCAA rep communicated. The committee didn't look at that in terms of seeding, but VT was denied the ability to host due to those factors. VT did its due diligence with the NCAA. Again, they 17 seed had nothing to do with the inability to host per the rep ** Edited by VAHokie89 at 5/10/2026, 8:37:04 PM ** Edited by VAHokie89 at 5/10/2026, 8:59:40 PM

Exactly. If we had been a 13 seed, they could have told us that
and then explained we didn't meet the requirements to host. Two separate issues.
MidloHokie MidloHokie

Well, shouldn't that been made public? Why leave it to speculation?

It was asked directly. And answered directly. It would be public knowledge

Because it's embarrassing and they don,'t like being embarrassed

Embarrassing to who? It's not the NCAA's fault we can't meet the hosting
criteria. VT knows the issue. They just have to decide how to manage it.

OK, well that makes me feel better . . . . . NOT. . . . .
I wonder how Pete handled that with the team? Imagine if we had won 5 more games (a distinct possibility) and been an 8 seed but get sent to an SEC stadium. This is the kind of thing that would make coach wonder if he/she is in the right place.

Pete just talked about creating a schedule that could lead to hosting
And how they will play anywhere. He didn't address it

Tonight?
V
VAHokie89 OP

Yes.
He said for the cameras that "we don't care where we play, who we play." He was not "disappointed." "Going into this season, he thought they had a really good schedule lined up. We got unlucky with the teams that did not do well. We had a projected RPI but you don't know what teams are going to be like." He was confident we had "a strategy to host here" when asked about the graduation thing. When asked about what the players think about not hosting: The players don't care. We play on the road more than at home, and we have to be good on the road.

Not surprised.
Wurthman pretty much indicated such when he was at the Blacksburg Sports Club meeting.

Thankfully it looks like the Regionals are a week later in '27.

Fortunately they have already scheduled it for Friday May 14, 2027.

But next year the Hoowahs have graduation the weekend of the regionals.
That might cause them some heartburn since they spread theirs out for three days. But Hooville might have enough “qualified” hotel rooms available at that time. Assuming they get to hosting level next year…… ** Edited by RJHokie at 5/10/2026, 10:16:27 PM

Turns my stomach to think they might host next year.

Agree, but they had the talent this year, but not the OOC schedule.
They faded down the stretch worse than we did this season, but might not do so next year.

I am not sure they had enough talent. If VT was not going to host then
certainly uva was not going to host.

The Hoowahs had their chances and couldn’t deliver.

Googling the dates shows that the 2027 regionals are anticipated to
start Friday 5-21-27 and end Sunday 5-23-27. Super Regionals are anticipated to start on Friday 5-28-27 and end Sunday 5-30-27.

So, they seeded and moved VT. No wonder the team looked pissed.

No. Vt was seeded 17. Regardless of the ability to host
TomTurkey TomTurkey

So, what did hotel availability have to do with hosting.
So we would have traveled at 15 or 16 anyway?
R

Most likely.
That’s one of the requirements.

Just so I understand. You don't know how the committee considered that info
So, we could still theoretically host the Super Regional

VT would play the winner of the Alabama regional. If Alabama loses, VT hosts the Super Regional.

How do the number of hotel rooms affect play on the field?
TomTurkey TomTurkey
2mo
Have to house 4 teams at about 30 per team, umpire crews, TV crew,
Announcing team, any NCAA reps, etc. Pete takes the team to a hotel to avoid distractions. I think the hotels have to be within 30 miles(?). VT graduates around 4,000 each year. That's a SWAG.
R
RJHokie
2mo
The host is required to have at least 30 hotel rooms in three hotels
available to the visiting teams, and I believe each hotel is to be within 30 miles. There may be other requirements as to the hotels as well, like food service availability, etc.
MidloHokie MidloHokie
2mo
Well, the regional dates have been known for a couple years. Was it . . .
. . . not POSSIBLE to work with a couple of hotels to guarantee rooms? It would've required some creative thinking and cooperation but seems possible. Booking.com is showing availability in Roanoke at a number of places.
King of Hokies King of Hokies

Of course it's possible! But the AD would need a "can do" attitude. And we
didn't have that.

Largely the fault of scar and auburn being worse than expected.
They tried to schedule good teams.

To schedule but… It helped mid-majors who scheduled competition.
