Stock Up: Virginia Tech
The Hokies found a way to win a pair of games against the Gamecocks in Columbia. The offense looks to be as explosive as it usually is, even with new pieces such as Nora Abromavage, Addison Foster and Gaby Mizelle stepping up.
The biggest question heading into the season was whether Emma Mazzarone could take on the ace role and based on this weekend’s results, she’s heading toward that. While the walks were a bit of an issue, Mazzarone throws with so much velocity and spin that it’s tough to square her up. Plus, she had multiple key hits as she potentially develops into one of the best two-way players.
Virginia Tech also had a bit of a surprise with a sophomore Bree Carrico. The righty who did not appear in any games as a freshman has apparently taken on a key bullpen role. She appeared in four of the five games, both against South Carolina, earning a pair of saves and allowing one run over 9.2 innings.

The announcer said she'd gained something like 6mph from last year. Announcer also said it didn't sound like much, but it is. I had to laugh. 6mph is a massive gain in a year. Credit to Bree. Sounds like she crushed the offseason workouts.

for Coach Pete sometime in the future. 3 would be significant and 6 stretching the limits of credulity. Whatever the increase might be I am sure her workout routine and other changes in mechanics would be of great interest.

I spoke with a Syracuse fan in Columbia who pointed out that the Cuse does not have an indoor facility. They practice in the football indoor.

Stock Down: South Carolina
It’s hard not to believe South Carolina should’ve won at least one of the games against Virginia Tech. The Gamecocks put together early leads, but one big inning in each contest doomed them. Ashley Chastain needs an arm to step up the way Sam Gress did and bear down in those tight moments the way she did last season. That didn’t happen this weekend, as no one stopped the bleeding. If the Gamecocks want to reach the heights they did in 2025, that has to change.
