The offense looks to be as explosive as it usually is, even with new pieces such as Nora Abromavage, Addison Foster and Gaby Mizelle stepping up. The biggest question heading into the season was whether Emma Mazzarone could take on the ace role and based on this weekend’s results, she’s heading toward that. While the walks were a bit of an issue, Mazzarone throws with so much velocity and spin that it’s tough to square her up. Plus, she had multiple key hits as she potentially develops into one of the best two-way players. Virginia Tech also had a bit of a surprise with a sophomore Bree Carrico. The righty who did not appear in any games as a freshman has apparently taken on a key bullpen role. She appeared in four of the five games, both against South Carolina, earning a pair of saves and allowing one run over 9.2 innings.
