When I played a lot of tournament softball I remember losing the first game in a double elimination tournament and ended up playing 8 more games that day before we finally lost. That was incredibly fun!!

aren't under much strain with their motion so can throw many more pitches in a day than Baseball. Makes for a great series to get the youngsters and backups in. Sounds good to me.

to allow teams to get multiple games in a short window both in terms of tuning up and getting a mindset for upcoming conference games in a 3 game weekend scenario. It is not a huge physical strain and fits the academic schedules pretty well also.

Doubleheaders aren't that uncommon to begin with and I assume the teams involved here would want to get in as much work as possible in early season tune up games.
Softball and baseball doesn't have continuous action that would leave most players gassed after one game. Pitching is an obvious exception, but you're already likely to spread doubleheader innings across multiple arms.

The field all that they can. They are also 18-22 years old. They recover very quickly. As a fan, I l love it as well. Another chance to watch the Hokies play.
