NCAA Committee Chair on Oregon’s selection as the final host
After the selection show, the NCAA held a conference call with the Chairman of the Selection Committee, Kurt McGuffin, who is also the AD at Tennessee-Martin.
A question arose concerning the last couple of hosting spots and this was his response:
"(The) 15, 16 (overall seeds) and then the teams that were right there (also in the running to host) probably took the majority of our discussion throughout the weekend.
"A lot of discussion … between Alabama, Oregon, Virginia Tech and some other teams. … There was probably a group of six teams for those last two (hosting) spots."
He said Oregon was helped by going 17-4 against the top 50 of the RPI, including five top-10 RPI wins. He noted that both Oregon and Tech had three Quad-4 losses.
"Virginia Tech did have five top-25 (RPI) wins but … just one top-10 win in there, while Oregon's had five top-10 wins.
"So it was really close."
Just sharing. Don’t shoot the messenger.

We know they got plenty of top 25, etc but how did they perform in the same metrics? Notice how all the stats being stated are for Oregon and favorable vs us, no talk of Bama #s or metrics.

It is one thing to lose a series to a FSU or Alabama...but to lose a series to Pitt and then have issues afterwards. That cost us the image we developed when we won 17 in a row. Lose one game to Pitt, fine. But lose the series?

walked batters scored when you had a 7 run lead and the game was basically won. You have no chance to get a batter out when you walk them. When the ump squeezes the strike zone you have to throw the damn ball across the plate.

Because the 1st game then wasn’t a fluke and we obviously lost the series.
Oh well. Let’s go win on Friday.

they will supposedly make a decision based on something else.

Take the Pitt debacle out and there wouldn't even be a discussion about VT.

They needed another west coast team for travel and TV so Oregon was going to get that slot. There’s enough between the three teams that they had enough cover to justify any decision they made…so they went with one that helped the whole the most and made things easier for them.
