For some reason, my DVR didn't record the game yesterday.
But I did get the overnight recording, and I'm watching the 5th inning now. It's amazing how the game turned after the check swing was NOT called the third strike. That one would have been the second out.

Well the BC coach waited way too long to pull the plug on the pitcher
As good as the Atlanta Braves are, their manager drives me nuts by sticking with their starter when he is clearly imploding..

Like a swing but TV replay slow mo it did
I think in real time which umps had to call it he saw same as me…Chatfield has some of the QUICKEST hands I’ve ever seen and her ability to stop the swing was so fast it helped for sure. To the naked eye it looked like she held up before bat got to her left hip but it was such a quick stop action nobody could see how far around she was

I checked my TV at the 5th inning and needless to say, I didn’t worry about what I missed.

Catches that very first line drive of the inning, it’s a completely different inning as well.
Momentum matters so much in college softball. They gave us a free out, we got a favorable call on that check swing and then boom our bats did the rest.

from so many throws to the plate. Think that one time she was aiming @VTChip in the front row. He was so loud!

Outthought themselves. Never pitch outside when the shift is on. SS and 2B
both playing up the middle. Just like executing a hit and run. Drag the bat head just a bit and poke it.

playing that way up to that point so they continued to do what worked for innings 1 - 4?
(In response to this post by HokieAllMyLife)
I thought they played straight up the 1st 4. I'm likely wrong though
Just ask my wife.

I've seen on the board some folks saying it was a strike and others arguing it was not a strike.
What do you think it was?

But thankfully the ump disagreed!

On TV it was closer, in my opinion, than those at the game were claiming.
One of those borderline calls that could’ve easily gone against us. Glad it didn’t.

I don't think she swung the bat over the first base line, which used to be the rule, and she didn't break her wrists. But I admit that I don't know what the rule is, or what is convention.
(In response to this post by Atlee Hokie)
Breaking your wrists used to be the rule back in the day
In the late 60s / early 70s when I played

Note: As a general rule, there are four factors when determining if a batter has swung at the ball or checked the swing:
(1) Did they make an attempt to hit/bunt/slap the pitch?
(2) Was the barrel of the bat out in front of their front hip?
(3) Did they roll their wrists?
(4) Did they swing through the ball and bring the bat back or draw the
bat back before the pitch arrived?
While at the game, I was certain it was a checked swing but after looking at it on replay, it certainly could have gone either way.
Regardless, I thought the BC coach really reacted poorly and her team reflected her frustration.

The ACC Network softball recap show 'experts' last night were adamant in supporting the BC coach. 'BC was CHEATED', said the talking head ex softball catcher....'So many bad calls went against them'. Can't remember one time an 'expert' expressed sympathy when the Hokies were left holding the short end of the stick. What comes around goes around.....

Did the talking head say that? Specifically in the 5th yesterday - Did the Hokies have anything to do with the right fielder over-throwing the catcher or making late and inaccurate throws to the plate, did the Hokies have anything to do with left fielder muffing a line drive hit virtually right at her, did the Hokies have anything to do with their pitcher throwing outside to right hand batters when the shift to pull was on.
BC must stand for Bull Crap. They got their butts handed to them.

bat on a right hand batter. If I don't see the round circle of the top of the bat, no swing.

The secondary debate is why have the 3rd base ump get the appeal (TT - unless 1st base ump was at 2nd base - I haven't seen the game).

not have a view to make the call. I looked at the edited video of the 5th and, for ball 4, you can see he is positioned between 2nd and first. I suspect he was also there for the contested call.
There is no video review on called balls and strikes. I think that is the key point - there wasn't any way to overturn the call on the field.
It definitely rattled the BC pitcher and team. Their pitcher was awesome up to that point.

Think you’re spot on. The 3B ump doesn’t have a good view of a RH batter
If the HP ump thought it was a swing, he would’ve called it a swing. So the fact that he didn’t kind of encourages the 3B ump to claim plausible deniability and just go with the original call since he does not have a better view in that case.
Same thing happened on Saturday, except it was BC that got the benefit of the 3B ump
not having a better view and just going w the HP ump’s initial call.

doesn't need help. I've had base umps who responded to the catcher pointing at the base umps wanting an appeal. That's a huge NO-NO. The plate ump asks for help - if the catcher points at the base ump, base ump better not move a muscle.
My beef is if he does ask for help and mechanics say he must go to third in that instance - that's a highly questionable mechanics. If the plate is supposed to go to 3rd asking for help because he's closer than 1st base ump - if closeness is deemed the primary reason, the plate ump is closer than anybody. Make a decision, make the call, you're the plate ump making calls on every pitch anyway. What's so hard about one check swing.
To say that would have changed how that 5th inning turned out is hopeful speculation by BC. The fact we did almost the same in the 5th inning the game before says more.

I had a good look and deemed no swing. The 1st base ump looked like he was itching to ring the batter up. Sorry, my call until appealed. And no swing! Not sorry!!

Chatfield runs to first base, and for a brief moment, you can see he was not positioned on the line.
