UVA to B10 is a ten times better fit than SEC,Va Tech is closer to AAU
membership than some here realize. I am not saying the B10 will take both of us, but it’s not as far fetched as some are making it out to be.

But the real answer comes by comparing VT to others who are also in the running. And the question is complicated when we look beyond individual programs and start to compare pairings or groupings of schools. Is UVa/Miami more attractive than VT/Clemson, UNC/GT? Will SEC and B1G fight over UNC/UVa? How many schools can be involved overall? Will the sequence of movement control the final outcome? That was the case in the death of The PAC 12. We all have our predictions, fragile as they are.
If you find yourself with time to ponder this subject: list all of the teams you believe are candidates. Include possible properties out west. Use whatever criteria you deem appropriate. (Don't try to be objective, not possible, that's okay.) I change my mind almost daily on my "Most Likely" result.
For a while now, I have been consumed with the changing/growing role of media companies asserting their fiscal muscle, particularly in college sports. It's too important to be left out of any realignment calculation.

Arguably it is what you desire in a school. UVa is small and almost private atmosphere. I am not sure VT name across country is not just as big. Both good schools. Both compete against each other with chance to win.

First VT graduates are averaging more in starting salary than UVA
Engineering; much Top 10 engineering
Data Analytics Top nationally
UVA key is business/commerce/Law/Medicine
VT graduates need to not accept their degrees are second rate and their school doesnt rank and have some swagger. VT does what VT does Major national Land Grant school , R&D Engineering and holistic pragmatic national programs.
UVA does a UVA thing. smaller school focused on a few things, embracing tradition and reputation of Mr. Jefferson. not a school about selfless service.

UVA isn't a better academic university. I would call it a push.

We’re usually better ranked in engineering, but even there, it’s not that much. Both are top 50: 14 vs 35 out of 210. Business and med schools rank wayyy better for them, and just having a law school moves the academic needle.
And here’s the link:

I don't buy the USNWR an effective measure on the quality of an education. I've seen other measures that put VT as the #1 university in Virginia. But I'm sure the Hoos don't think that's an effective measure of their school either.

part in the county, state, conference, or whatever. But at each stop, I enjoyed myself, made friends, and built my résumé. My kids and family members can’t tell the same story.
VT was one of those stops. But by almost every metric, UVA (and W&M for that matter) are better on aggregate. GPA, class rank, SAT/ACT scores, ranking services, AAU status, grant funding, you name it. It’s OK to acknowledge that, but also that you value the place and the time you spent there, whether it be for your own academic journey, the friends you made, or what followed.
I know what you mean about some of these ranking services. I don’t love them either, because they often overemphasize soft metrics such as reputation and diversity. But out of curiosity, I’d love to see what ranking system you can find that shows us as overall better.

I base a university’s prestige on their alumni in the workplace as the best metric. All those metrics like GPAs, SATs, etc that “make a school great” mean nothing until you’re in the real world. UVa alum are mostly oversold and am always left with that feeling like I just paid twice as much for a car than I should have. They’re not dumb but they’re not exactly the clever Mensa material they claim to be. I find many of them lazy because they go into the real world thinking they’re smarter than the rest and can get by on their wits. Only to find out that the Tech, VMI, ODU, VCU and JMU guys are every bit as sharp as they are. I’ve worked in Virginia for 36 years after college and I can say without any doubt that every “dream team” that I’ve worked with has always had multiple Hokies in that group. I have yet to have a Wahoo on a dream team. Most say I’m biased because I have a Tech degree, but Tech really is the best school in Virginia when you look at sheer intelligence and problem-solving abilities. UVa grads all want to manage people right out of college and I have to say their management skills aren’t any more stellar than any other school alumni.

it’s not close. I want both schools to make the P2 and I wish for the same P2, but the only sport that makes tens and probably a 100 million is football. Sports that lose money, as much as I love them really don’t matter.

credible sources indicating that VT has ever been considered by the B10. It’s only this board. We feel like we are a good fit for the B10. But the feeling is NOT mutual.
I had stated that VT’s only hope was to tag along with UNC to the SEC (and people didn’t like it, lol).
So far, no reporters or credible pundits have mentioned VT’s name as a P2 candidate.
The closest thing is this Flug’s YouTube video claiming that if UVa isn’t going to the SEC, VT has a chance, which is an exact scenario I had posted before.
Again, my view is this. I don’t see many ACC schools will be picked by the P2.
Not because the ACC schools don’t want the P2 membership, but because there are not that many valueable ACC schools for the P2.
And VT is not there yet in my opinion.

They think would be the most likely. Which have at best been influenced by other media who are guessing based on their own opinions as well. There's some decent educated guessing going on out there, but it's still just guessing and opinions.

that some won’t believe we have a chance to get into the P2. You IMHO underrate Virginia Tech both the football success of the last 35 years and academically (ranked about the same as Penn State and William and Mary now), but we will see how this goes the next 3-4 years. We are both taking educated guesses. I would love to know details why you rate Virginia Tech so low, beyond media people that haven’t written about this lately, unless you count Flugar who won’t reveal his sources.

But we should try to be realistic. The B10 is not a possibility.
Like you, I don’t trust the media, but we need to follow the actual reporting. If VT were ever considered by the Big Ten, there’d have to be at least some kind of leak or mention somewhere. I haven’t seen anything.
When UMCP got poached, there were murmurs beforehand. UMCP didn’t vote for the exit fee increase, which showed they might have had other options.
I also remember UNC, UVA, and even GT being mentioned as possibilities for the B10.
VT? Not a peep.
It’s not just late reporting. Since then, I haven’t heard a single thing about VT and the Big Ten.
The only thing VT had was reporting that the SEC considered VT as a partner for Texas A&M. VT didn’t pursue that avenue, and again, what I’m saying is that VT’s only real chance is with the SEC.
Even if VT becomes AAU, the Big Ten is still a very long shot.
Without AAU, zero chance.
Just my 2 cents.

and is based on the Media (not a peep from the media is your position). Your absolute no way Virginia Tech gets in the B1G more like a Rival fan than a Virginia Tech alumni. 🤔

But the B10 primarily looks at AAU status. We are not an AAU member.
Our biggest market is Washington DC area and the B10 already has half of it with UMCP.
Virginia as a state is smaller than Texas, Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina. Its population is similar to Arizona’s, but it’s no longer growing as fast.
VT’s location is hard to get to. Not an ideal setup for a nationwide conference.
It’s just logical for the Big Ten to look at other programs first. I think we are very low on their list, if we’re on it at all.
On the other hand, I think we are relatively high on the SEC’s list, probably higher than FSU, Clemson, and GT.
I’m a fan, but I also try to look at the situation objectively.
Sorry if I sounded a little harsh. It’s just my opinion.

In states with B12 schools, the state of Virginia's population size is right in the middle of the pack. In states with SEC schools, Virginia is above the middle in 5th place. So, those two arguments don't support the devaluation of the state of Virginia based on population.

like Alabama or Oklahoma have huge population bases, but they have dedicated fans, but more importantly, they are national brands. Out here in flyover, when KU basketball is playing, there is no one at Wall Mart shopping as an example. Not a very populist state by any measure, and the TV market is nothing, but they garner huge ratings numbers.
(In response to this post by Culpeper Hokie)

fact. I was getting the feeling that you think this is all stuck in one direction, and can’t change. I think a year ago when the SEC and B1G snatched the College Football Playoff from everyone else by saying we will do our own if you don’t give us majority control, it looked like it was going in that direction.
Now though ESPN/SEC and Fox/B1G are back to fighting again. I think ESPN/SEC want a P1 with Promotion and Relegation. Sankey recently said he read the book on it and thinks that’s the best direction for College Football. On the other hand the B1G is promoting the opposite direction with a 24 team playoff. They are starting to back down on Automatic Bids to get it too. Why is this important to Virginia Tech and Virginia?
Because it suddenly is about getting as many teams in the College Football Playoff as you can to get the most money. So having a rich state like Virginia that is in the top tier in size, wealth and academic standings, could mean two from one state. Virginia Tech will bring rabid football fans with Franklin and Virginia will do the same for basketball. It seems to be forgotten, but the best ratings are backyard rivalries. So I am not saying it will happen, but a lot has changed in the last year, and with the SEC/ESPN and B1G pulling in different directions right now, I would say both to one conference is possible. The Final Four is usually a time watch, things like UVA more interested in the B1G could easily be the beginning of some paradigm shifts.
PS I have spent a career doing things people said were not realistic. I think realism is all in how high you build your ceiling. Think Big and Grow Rich book has many examples of that.

them to be. The Big 10, distributing a reported $100M per school is a pretty high price to pay. If it pencils out however, why not go to 24 schools - or higher?
The problem, is that it just doesn't pencil out.

it's pretty commonsensical. The current membership of the P2 will never vote to make less money. Currently, ND is the only school not in the P2 that makes that kind of money. If the make of of the B12 (as an example because of my moniker) was worth that kind of money, and got those ratings, they would already be making that kind of money.
When Utah (not UVA) believes that they are Big 10 material, then they are saying that they should make the same money as Ohio State and Michigan. Any objective observer would never put Utah in the same class as OSU and Michigan. Would you? USC, yes. UCLA as a travel partner, yes.
When Texas Tech (example) says that they should be in the SEC, would anybody put them in the same class as Alabama, Georgia, LSU and others? Of course not - but Texas and Oklahoma was worth it.
Using football and ratings as the metric, There are only about 3 or 4 schools that are worthy of being in that class, and only one that would brings even more value. None of those teams are in the B12 currently, so it is the top of your conference and ND.
I'll be the first in line to congratulate this board if there is a P2 invite in your future.
Details? Like others, I have my opinion.

fans and schools are. I will find it very interesting just how the ACC distributes that money, especially to the basketball schools that routinely make the tournament, and garner national eyeballs when they play key regular season games in addition to sweet 16 type numbers. Will it work to keep the conference together? It might, if the FSU's are satisfied, and are making the playoffs.

the P2. FSU, Clemson, and Miami have the national football brands and viewership, and one could argue that they are worthy of a P2 invite, or at least, make the same type of money.
We have all seen the viewership numbers of the schools in the B12 and ACC. Not sure most of them will ever get those types of numbers in the short term, no matter how they perform on the field - Including UNC and KU.
