Would you do this deal to make ND the 18th team in the ACC?
1. Allow ND to keep and continue to make their own TV deal.
2. Allow ND to pick its own 8 teams to play to be one of the two divisions in the ACC. These can be the same 8 teams permanently, or they can rotate some or all on or off.
3. ACCCG would be ND division winner vs. Non-ND division winner. So ND would have access to play in the ACCCG and win the ACC.
In the past, I thought no way would ND do this. And I still seriously doubt they would today. But if you look what is happening to them. No more USC. No more Michigan. No more Michigan State. WADR to BYU, they just aren't cutting it as a big time opponent for the Irish. And they were hurt this year in the CFP by not playing on championship weekend. Plus, they now have game options in California and Texas in the ACC to give them a more national schedule.
I wonder if ND would take this deal, which opponents they would choose to play annually or regularly in the ACC? Would they make their division easy or hard? Are there teams they would choose to never play?
If rivals (such as UVa and VT) were not in the same division, they could play a 9th game either "OOC" or, to count in winning percentage in the standings. Teams could even schedule a 10th game if they choose.
Anyway, I thought I'd revisit this since much has changed since we last talked about this long shot of ND ever joining the ACC.

If ND keeps its own media deal, there’s no huge monetary increase for the ACC.

I was against it from the start. But to answer your question in the here and now moving forward, what the ACC would get is at least a little bit of stability and a legit blue blood, an area that the ACC is in need of.
BTW, in the original deal, I will say this. Even though I think it diluted the ACC, at least one could argue that it kept ND from going to the Big Ten. I think all other parties, including the SEC, BigXII and ESPN are happy about that. But again, I never liked the looks of it.

ESPN would have to pony up $50 million a year extra to ND just to make ND whole, just to break even.
How much more would ESPN pay over that to provide more money to ND and the other 17 members?

There brand is independent football, and they are doing financially very very well. There is no reason for any change.
There will always be schools that would be willing to play ND at any cost.
ND other sports need a conference and ACC fits. ACC simply agreed to allow them to join for all sports except football on the contingent that 5 ACC teams get to play ND a year. Simple as that.
For everybody else, its not good they get special treatment, but guess what they can due to the national brand and investment that media has in ND. Simple as that. And also if conferences decided that only conference members are allowed to play in the tourney. that is set up for a MAJOR lawsuit.

Notre Dame is not joining the ACC.
The ACC as we know it will not survive the next round of realignment in about a half dozen years.
We need to stop talking about things that have no chance of happening and talk about ideas that just might work.

begrudge ND their independence and long ago moved on from any fight to change it. However, that does not mean they have to accept unwarranted favoritism shown to the Irish or the pathetic whining of the ND AD when he gets his shorts in a wad.

in the ACC, but I also don't want the incredible favoritism that they receive. I also don't like that the ACC Commissioner is basically a puppet for them, in spite of their misdirected outrage over Miami that beat them instead of the SEC's 5th best team that got boat raced by FSU in the beginning of the year and Alabama the day before the selection. I am just waiting for them to try to get out of the exit fees early and not pay them, and then do a 5-6 game agreement with the SEC or maybe both SEC and B!G, while putting their other sports back in the Big East.
PS If the Mag now I believe 8 (GT is 8 IMHO) leave the ACC, the ACC and Big East will merge what is left, that is basically basketball schools first.

Just be independent and place their other sports in some other conference besides the ACC. I’m tired of being in two consecutive dysfunctional conferences and cleaning their jocks. Or better yet, take all that ND football money and go independent with all their other sports if independence is that important to them.

And I would not blame them. The ACC is a zombie conference. It’s already dead as a power and everyone knows it. No chance that ND would choose to join at this point in time knowing that teams like FSU and Clemson are going to bolt the first chance they get.

Either they have to be all in or all out for me. Luckily for all involved, the ACC will either be gutted or turned into a G5 conference which will make ND bolt elsewhere which is probably the Big12 (assuming the Big12 is still a power conference in the future). If not there, ND will go groveling back to the Big East for their other sports. I think ND should be honest and go independent for all of their sports if independence is THAT important to them. It’s the whole cake and eating it thing I guess.

Look, ND is not going to be interested in this or any other such scheme.
But, the deal is that not many can pull off what ND does.
Almost none could make independence work; they are afraid to try, or they make too much money in a TV collective called a "conference".
ND has been able to pull off football independence and put its other sports in a collective.
The Irish are not going to give that status up. Sorry. It took a lot to build that structure.

but it falls on deaf ears for me. They’ve conditioned most of us schmucks that they’re special for so long that most people accept the unfairness. My take is if you’re so special that you must remain independent in football, just bite the bullet and go independent with all your other sports. It’s the pure definition of hypocrisy. Otherwise, play nice with you ACC conference mates because they gave you a home.
