SMU, I just want to say I am glad SMU is part of the ACC, I struggle with
the Pacific Coast schools being a part of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Not that they aren’t phenomenal schools, but I actually think about Olympic Sports and the travel knowing they pretty much all will need their education more than anything from their college experience. That said, the people I have met from SMU were awesome!! Down to earth and friendly and respectful and just nice people. You have been very respectful when a lot of people in the ACC have struggled with the coast to coast expansion, and that is fully appreciated by me. I have family and friends in DFW, and have had a lot of good times there, especially in the Stock Yard. πŸ‚ Cheers 🍻 my ACC brother!!

FSU sued calling Stanford out
They said Stanford lowered the ACC strength of schedule in the suit. How is that working out for FSU? I'm no longer a fan of FSU. Glad the Hoos beat them earlier this year in C'ville. ** Edited by HOO86 at 10/19/2025, 8:31:32 PM ** Edited by HOO86 at 10/19/2025, 8:34:55 PM

I was a big fan of Bobby Bowden
I wanted UVA to beat him, and we did a couple of times. I liked Jimbo Fisher well enough too. FSU coaches aren't the issue. The Board of Regents is stacked with former Bobby Bowden players that have an inflated view of themselves.

Bowden could have taken FSU to the SEC but chose the ACC.
His initial contact with the SEC was met with a snub and to add salt to the wound the SEC brought USCe to the fold. Later when the SEC suggested the conference would be open to the Noles application for admission, Bowden basically showed them his middle finger.

Those types of insults stick around.
I still remember the insults from UNC's faculty members, thus I absolutely loath UNC.

It might be costlier to keep him
That fanbase will revolt if they don't can him. It's over for him. They've invested a ton of money in stadium renovations; they can't have that place half full next year

They have incurred alot of debt
Total Renovation of the Stadium...... 8-9 figures, then cost for suing the conference. While the teams they opposed, just win... no empathy here for FSU

They will keep their head on a swivel, if they lose to Wake Saturday 180
could happen again.

$100 million to buy him out and the 2 coordinators.
We'll see. Since FSU pleads poverty.

And pay the buyout of the coach they hire
Unless they hire one of the coaches that has been fired, but I don't see their fanbase being happy with hiring someone who just got fired from a prominent head coaching gig.

Would be a startling number, especially since they want to pay ACC exit fee
most likely.

Don’t think that was always the case, but might be so w/ their recent moves
I think the B10 was honing in on them, but their putting out vibes they really want the SEC, and the lawsuit, and the collapse on the field, some B10 Presidents aren’t going to like it. They are the ones with the votes. Plus Miami and South Florida are already in the AAU too, so they have two other avenues to get into Florida.

It's telling that the actual reason SMU doesn't belong in any power-
conference is always ignored by the SMU/Calford pushers - if the idea is to get the maximum number of people watching your conference games, SMU is literally the exact opposite of what you want in every quantifiable way. It's a tiny, private institution with zero fan base. SMU could go undefeated every year and would still be the 6th or 7th TV draw in their own state, never mind anywhere else. I guess, if you're an SMU person, on the bright side, your program will probably be the top dog in the new-look G5 ACC once the conference implodes into a shell of itself here in a few years. I would advise developing a heated football rivalry with Wake Forest ASAP.

They are at a good location to increase their fan base.
And with the financial support they have, they can put a decent team on the field. In 2024 their attendance went up 44%. They averaged 32,700 in a stadium that has a 32,000 capacity. They have expansion plans to go to 45,000. Being in the P4 conference, and if they continue winning, their ceiling will be higher than that. How much higher I don't know. But they are making efforts to Target And connect to their their substantial community. At least they're trying with real effort, which is a lot more than many ACC teams are doing. I'm glad to have them on board in the ACC. They're an asset. They're putting forth genuine effort to build a good football program. Other ACC programs could learn from them ** Edited by wwhokie1 at 10/21/2025, 12:59:35 PM

The only way anyone is going to be a fan of SMU is attending school there-
which 99.9% of people cannot afford, because it's a tiny, private country club for the children of Texas' oil money and idle rich. It's universally acknowledged on here that TV money and the networks continue to ruin college football, which I agree with. So, just ask yourself - if it made any financial sense at all whatsoever to have SMU anywhere except where they were, don't you think they would have already been in the Big 12 or elsewhere? SMU had been actively trying to financially brute force their way into a "power" conference since the 1990's, to no avail. Why? Because nobody cares about or watches SMU. Even if/when they're good, nobody cares. They're entirely an afterthought in their own state, never mind nationally. So, sorry, but you're wrong. They're the opposite of an "asset." It doesn't matter that they "try harder" than Boston College, because they're just another tiny little private school in the ACC that doesn't move the needle, which was already the big problem facing the conference in the first place.

Its a different world now. All that money is gonna buy some good players

Again, the point remains - it doesn't matter.
I'm not sure how to make that anymore clear. If you think the ACC needed a new member to come in and win all their games, you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what the primary problem facing the conference was/is. The ACC didn't need a program to come in and win all their games. It needed a brand name that drew eyeballs. SMU is literally the exact opposite of what the ACC needed to address its biggest problem. All SMU coming in and winning a bunch of conference games is doing is making it a whole lot easier to make jokes about how the ACC sucks. There was zero reason to expand when the ACC did. Less than zero. It was just another in a long line of mind numbingly stupid mistakes by the conference. Imagine if the problem at your party was that the punch wasn't getting anyone drunk, and nobody was having any fun, and instead of spiking the punch, you took a big, fragrant piss in it. That's what adding SMU and CalFord did for the ACC. ** Edited by Baltimore_Hokie at 10/21/2025, 4:33:49 PM

Not so sure, if a team wins, a lot of people want to jump on that bandwagon
Look at a team like Miami, when they were competing for championships, a lot of people started watching their games. Don't underestimate the power of bandwagon fans. People either love a winner or hate a winner, but either way they watch. ** Edited by wwhokie1 at 10/21/2025, 8:09:53 PM ** Edited by wwhokie1 at 10/21/2025, 8:11:01 PM

If Toledo went undefeated for 5 years straight, it might slightly bump-
up the number of people watching Toledo games, but it would not significantly change the fact that practically nobody watches Toledo games unless they're tuning in to see the other team. The exact same principle applies to SMU. Comparing SMU to the University of Miami is like comparing green beans to Snickers bars.

Wait, Toledo did go undefeated for about that long. Didn't even
get them a decent bowl opponent.

Toledo is not in a P4 conference. There's a reason SMU pushed hard to be
In the ACC. Instead of comparing to Toledo, consider what would happen if Pitt went undefeated for 5 years in a row. They certainly wouldn't turn into Alabama, but they would receive more than a slight bump. Winning the ACC 5 years in a row, is very different from winning the MAC 5 years in a row. Completely different level of competition. As I pointed out, their first year in the ACC saw 40% increase in attendance, which maxed out their stadium. Not just a slight bump. And it's not just about the size of your fan base, it's about the number of people wanting to watch your games. And when teams are winning, people tune in to watch. That's why so many ACC fans spend more time watching SEC games than ACC games ** Edited by wwhokie1 at 10/22/2025, 10:57:50 AM ** Edited by wwhokie1 at 10/22/2025, 11:04:10 AM

I don't participate in circular arguments.
You clearly are unable or refuse to understand anything I'm saying, and can only reply with, "NUH UH!" If you want to ignore all available evidence and choose to believe that SMU, the 7th best college football draw in Texas, that even people in its own state of Texas would only watch if there was no Texas, TAMU, TT, Baylor, TCU, or Houston game on, that literally no other "power" conference wanted for 30+ years, was all of a sudden a solid value add for the ACC, as opposed to a panicked addition by incompetent administrators fearful they were about to take a massive pay cut, then that's your prerogative. You will get no further replies from me on this thread. I hope you have a great day.

Explaining the difference between Toledo winning in the MAC, and SMU
Winning in the ACC is not a circular argument. And it certainly isn't saying "nuh uh". I understand what you're saying, I just disagree. I'm not saying SMU is going to be the equivalent of FSU or Clemson, but they have shown the ability to be far more than a Toledo or a Boston college. And the viewership interest has reflected that. As I pointed out, they maxed out their stadium attendance in their first year in the ACC, and are planning an expansion. That certainly reflects interest. They have the money to produce a winning team. Winning in a power 4 Conference gets attention. We just disagree, that's fine. But to suggest that I'm unable to understand your arguments, or engaging in circular arguments, are just responding with "nuh uh" is not accurate. Time will tell if SMU was a good choice or not.
