USF
I have been saying USF would be an acceptable addition to the ACC if and when Miami or FSU leaves. I’m glad the Big 12 chose UCF over USF. Adding USF would be easier and cheaper than adding UCF (and USF fits better!). The Big 12 made some shortsighted choices. They took WVU instead of Louisville. (let’s be honest. olther than nostalgia, Louisville is a much better choice). Getting Houston was also questionable. I understand why they chose Houston over SMU as TCU already covers Dallas for the B12 (but SMU fits better for the ACC!). Yormark would have chosen UConn over Houston in my opinion. The B12 already covered Texas without Houston. Adding UConn means they are getting into Northeast.

The Big12 should've taken both WVU and Louisville
But a bad WVU team still rates better than a good Louisville team. SMU doesn't fit better in the ACC. The ACC had to settle for the leftovers after the Big12 grabbed the 4 corner schools.

USF is an AAU school. Chew on that one as ask why they are ahead of VT

They are in a major market that supports the attraction and retention of
top research staff. That is probably the factor that hurts us the most in regards to AAU status. Research professors are probably looking for markets that offer outside research income opportunities separate from their primary job AS WELL AS job opportunities for their spouse.

Can't wait to see USF in the G5 ACC.
Those USF-SMU and Memphis-Wake Forest games are going to be absolute television blockbusters. The conference office will be printing money. The Big 12 is running scared.

As good (bad) as UCF-Houston and Cincy-Memphis blockbusters
By the way I don't think the ACC will ever invite Memphis. Their best chance is with the Big 12, as it has already made an offer to them.

They may have no choice - they're going to have to backfill under panic.
I know you probably think they'll be bellying up to the Big 12 like a buffet and taking who they want, but, as you're aware, we very much disagree on that. I think the more reasonable likely outcome after the 100% imminent implosion will be the ACC plucking up whatever American and Sun Belt programs they can to go with UConn.

The mass exodus from the ACC that you are anticipating will NOT happen.
But let's continue to agree to disagree.

I suppose we will have to. You're the only person on Earth that actually-
believes that, if you actually do believe it, which I kind of doubt, because you do seem reasonably intelligent. I still think you're primarily running some kind of influencer campaign here, otherwise you'd probably be a paid subscriber. But, I recognize you've denied that several times. That's enough for now, though. Have a great week!

actually
USF,WVU, UCONN and Cincy should be in Acc. This east west coach stuff is not good. Keep ACC regionalized and go at it. If others leave. Build on core you have left. I do not desire VT student athletes traveling in Big 12 country.

Unless you are the SEC, the trend is to become a national conference.
I expect this will continue unless the P4 joins forces and get into a TV deal as a package (super league)

The ACC is always 1-2 steps behind, they should take USF immediately, but
they will do the opposite. Why in the world wait until FSU and Miami leave, it looks so weak!!!

They made a run to the Sweet 16 several years back. The nickname they
were given was Dunk City because they were dunking on everybody. Pretty impressive run as a 15 seed.

I don’t think we need a third Florida school that isn’t UF. I also doubt ESPN would approve the expansion.

Won’t be the 3rd Florida school for long, and give them SMU deal & ESPN

The USF Dons have more football pedigree than the USF Bulls (IYKYK)
....And the University of San Francisco Dons don't even have football any more. I don't think pedigree is everything. But it matters. USF has no real football following. They are a geographic irony (Tampa is in South Florida?), and their branding looks like a made-up football opponent in a cheesy movie. OK, Great. They are 2-0 with two ranked wins. If only we had relegation and promotion so they could win their way into the big time instead of us having to debate over non football related criteria.

Yes the ACC should invite Connecticut now.
They are not here already because BC wants to be the only New England team. I disagree. And at the time the FSU/Clemson group wanted Louisville.

If the ACC invites UConn now, then they are basically waving the white flag
to the idea of the ACC being a power conference and G5 conference in football. It might even be the catalyst for schools, who are serious about DI-FBS football, to leave the conference for a conference who is more serious about DI-FBS football.

I don't think that's truly the case
Most of the ACC has already been scheduling football games with UConn. UConn beat UNC in a bowl game last year. They are playing Syracuse and BC almost every year. Pitt just signed a home and home with them coming up. NC State just finished one. Clemson had them in Death Valley recently. Louisville had them too. UVA and Wake did home and homes in the past decade. Florida State just signed a Women's Basketball home and home with them. I think that the ACC is quite familiar with UConn, and we can probably get them at a discount like we recently did with our recent additions. UConn in independent in football, and is now able to get out of the Big East because it's been over 6 years and their exit penalty is much lower. They would make a good pair with USF. I would hope the animosity over the lawsuit in 2002 will have ended as most involved are now departed from the ACC and from UConn. The FSU and Clemson's of the league need a place to go if they want to leave.

It doesn't matter if the ACC schools think they are a quality football
program. How does ESPN and the rest of the country feel about UConn football? If people don't care about UConn football, then they won't help the ACC with ratings. ** Edited by VTHokie2000 at 9/13/2025, 9:10:16 AM

I for one, am also glad we took UCF over USF. A
couple of wins, or a couple of seasons will not make the difference in the long run. BTW, the ACC has not added USF, so I'm not sure where the comparison comes from. West Virginia was the better football choice, and the only reason that Louisville is not in the B12 is because Texas didn't want them. Has nothing to do with the new and current B12. BTW, if a Louisville as an example makes significantly less money in 2030 than they do now because of the uneven distribution system the ACC is implementing, I don't think they will wait around until 2036 to make a decision if one is to be made. TCU is by far the best football brand of the thee Texas schools you mentioned. I tip my hat, as SMU does fit better in the ACC. Another small private that gets no ratings however, doesn't do the media contract thing much good. Also, looking at Houston, they have a pretty decent basketball program, and will bring in a lot of NCAA units to be distributed in the future. I'm not sure why you continue to compare the ACC to the B12, as at the end of the day, it will be the P2 that determines whether or not the ACC continues as they are, not the lowly truck stop B12.

To each their own.
No need to be defensive. If you're happy with WVU, Houston, and UCF, I'm happy for you. I would take Louisville, SMU, and USF, though.

I'm surprised the Big XII didn't take both schools when it had the
opportunity. I get the Big XII only needs 1 FL school, but adding both makes sense in this regard. 1. Having 2 FL schools gives the other Big XII schools more opportunities to play games in that state (if you subscribe to the philosophy that it help in recruiting...think all sports). 2. UCF and USF could develop a nice rivalry which can help with content. 3. UCF and USF are probably the last valuable DI FL schools that the P4 conferences may want to add given that FAU (FBS), FIU (FBS), Stetson (FCS), Jacksonville (non-football), FL Gulf Coast (non-football), Bethune-Cookman (FCS), Florida A&M (FCS), and North Florida (non-football) are the only ones left to pick from (assuming the conference wants a member from that state). 4. UCF and USF could become a nice travel partner for the now coast-to-coast Big XII (think all sports).

Their biggest mistake was
not taking Louisville along with WVU. The ACC would have been forced to take someone like UConn when UMCP left.

At the time, I don't believe L'ville was highly valued as an expansion
candidate. Plus, as a state the Commonwealth of KY is valued less than most of the states with the 14 ACC schools. I suspect the only reason the Big XII added WVU at the time is because it was expecting/hoping a more valuable ACC school would become available to "pair" up with WVU. You might even make a case there isn't much difference in valuable between Cincy and L'ville. Cincy may even have a slight edge when it comes to comparing the states. If we are talking biggest mistakes, then the Big XII's biggest mistake may have been not adding Cincy, L'ville, and Memphis when it added WVU.

At the time, USF was not making the
investments in their athletic programs that UCF was. Since UCF was added, they are now building a new stadium (pretty cool), and are working to upgrade a historically dismal basketball program. They would be a fantastic travel partner for UCF, and depending on what transpires with the ACC, they could be added in the future. UCF, like WVU was for decades, is out there on an island. Skipping past all of the click bait projections, they seem to have gotten the message on investing in their athletic programs. I think they would be a good add to either the ACC or the B12.
VTHokie2000 VTHokie2000

I probably would have still taken the risk at the time and tied their
payout to the level of investment USF made to its athletic program. Then again, I have never been a fan of having a school on an island because of the impact it can have on the non-revenue sports. So I try to look for ways to minimize the problem (i.e. make the island bigger by adding 1-3 more schools or connect the island to the mainland).

I agree on both counts. At the time, the B12
added Four schools, and I'm not sure the existing contract at the time could have absorbed more. When the new contract was negotiated, the 4 corners became available, and changed the dynamic of the conference. Without pure speculation on what I have read, I'm not convinced the current contract allows the B12 to add anyone they want without the networks coming up with more money. USF, even now, would be a tough sell. B12 hopes beyond hope that Miami comes available, but that is a completely different speculation and discussion.

Living in SWFL now allows me to disagree
First, whoever in the non-P4 that is having a good year always seems to float to the top of fanboard conference addition ideas. But it rarely moves the economic gauge and if it does at all , only for short term. I can also say the community interest level, passion , support , and pedigree of USF as opposed to a WVU pales in comparison. And let's not even get into non-football. And these days it is less and less about cable boxes in a new big growing state. So the economic argument IMO isnt good. I dont ever see a path for a USF - even should the bigger guns leave the ACC- much more viable for the existing B12 and ACC to get rid of a bit of deadweight and merge about 16-20 schools.

True that USF and UCF are not as valuable as
say, the four corner schools, not to mention FSU or Miami. However, I think Florida is just way too important for the ACC. If FSU or Miami leaves, USF is the best candidate. This wouls be similar to what the Pac-12 tried to do. Southern California was too important for them, so when USC and UCLA announced they were leaving, the Pac-12 wanted to invite SDSU. Reminder: Every P4 except for the B10 has presence in FL and TX. So does the AAC.

I believe they certainly are a better academic school than
UCF, and is a great fit for the ACC in those regards. The only way they would be on the radar for the ACC is if an only if the P2 comes knocking on the door, and takes some ACC schools with them. When the B12 lost Texas and Oklahoma, there just are no replacements for those blue blood football programs. No one comes even close except maybe USC, ND, and maybe FSU. Oregon and Washington are good programs, but even they do not replace a Texas and Oklahoma. It would be like the BIG losing OSU and Michigan. The blue bloods drive the money, like it or not. If the top 3(4) of the ACC leave, there is no combination of the top B12 and ACC schools that will be able to match the P2. Even with ND.
