The following conference really isn't too shabby...
FSU, CLEM, MIAMI, VT, UNC, NCSU, UVA
Yes, this is likely the magnificent 7, and you still need the media dollars... but it would be pretty darn entertaining football, lock up the mid-atlantic, and only have 7 mouths to feed. There are no bottom feeders like other conferences have (eg: no Vanderbilts, Northwestern's, two Mississippi schools, etc)
If you could add Notre Dame, or even West Virginia, that would be great as it just adds more football inventory.
If you really want to make it spicy, you could create a relegation system that is based on attendance, tv ratings, and record. You could almost assuredly guarantee your most valuable brands stay in the top each year since even a bad FSU team has solid attendance.
TIER 1: FSU, Clemson, VT, Miami, UNC, NCSU, Notre Dame, plus let's say 2 to 4 more rotating spots from Tier 2.
TIER 2: UVA, GT, Pitt, SU, BC, WF, LOU, STAN, CAL, SMU.

yeah I know it isnt happening- but I would think the payouts to PSU and UMD wouldnt be that much lower than B1G -and some or most of those two fan bases (definitely MD) would gladly do it. It would make too much sense- so no way.

playing FSU, MIAMI, VT, UNC, NSCU, UVA, WVU, GT, CLEMSON.... and maybe ND in some capacity.
They give up Michigan and Ohio State, but it's a pretty good upgrade not having to play Indiana, Northwestern, Illinois, Minnesota, Purdue, Iowa. They are probably fine playing Rutgers.
But I guess they do get to play USC, UCLA, Washington and Oregon... which is pretty darn attractive.

That is their #1 requirement, and really the only one they really care about. They have their NBC contract which brings them up to P2 money...actually B1X money which is at least $10M/year/school more than SEC money.

You need GT for the presence in Georgia, and WVU because the fans care about football. Notre Dame would have to be in the mix, and any other school that was interested could be non-football members.
That football league would have, on average, more compelling football matchups than the Big Ten.

what the heck - I'd take it. But it seems nobody that matters or who has sway wants a regional collegiate athletic conference anymore. It makes way too much sense which is why they are a thing of the past - like many other things that make too much sense going by the wayside.

also, during UNC Board of trustees meeting, there was an intent for UNC to maintain rivalries with Duke Wake
So VA VT, UNC State Duke Wake GT Miami (maybe clemson)... and get the ACC share divided by only 9 only, old acc. I dont think WVU would jump, big 12 been good to them, they feel appreciated, and stable. Something new like this group, would still be shaky.

That has been and will continue to be the main problem for the ACC.
This is the main topic that I repeat myself on constantly. Nobody cares about the small private schools (with only two exceptions, ND and Miami. USC is the only other private of value but they are large size). That fact will always exist across NCAA football. And the fact that private schools make up over a third of the ACC is just guaranteed weakness in ratings and respect.
