Suppose in an imaginary world UVa had a choice of being part of a conference that followed the traditional amateur athletics model and included schools like Duke, Notre Dame, Stanford, Cal-Berkeley, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Georgia Tech, maybe one or more of the service academies, maybe Syracuse and/or Boston College, maybe Tulane and/or Rice. Maybe one or two others of that ilk that do not immediately come to mind. Would UVa choose a future in an 8-12 school conference like that, accepting that its football program will never compete at the highest level if the alternative was the Big Ten? What if the alternative was the SEC?

do what's best financially. Lacrosse doesn't pay the bills. Football (and basketball to a lesser extent) does.

UVa is already making enough cash to win natties in tennis and lacrosse and so forth. It’s not like those sports are exceedingly expensive to fund, and UVa is not going to make appreciably less money so long as it is competes in a league that is close to on par with the current ACC. Said differently, Michigan and LSU are not suddenly going to start pouring disproportionate amounts of cash into fencing and diving and golf just because football money is coming in by the truckload.

and I'd say schools like Michigan and LSU have already been pouring money into non-revs because of truckloads of football money. If some other school (e.g., UVa) loses some football money, then "disproportionate" might happen without Michigan and LSU starting to pour. Also, while no individual non-rev is expensive to fund, 15 of them are...losing ground in football might make picking and choosing where you want your competitiveness more of a necessity/reality The other thing is that there's really no advantage to going into a "traditional amateur" league, is there? Other than being self-righteous and saying "we won't stoop to the SEC/B1G level!"

as a Republican, but he was very bipartisan. He created a lunch with all the Congress Men and Women of Virginia and the Senators that happens every month. It was originally put together to make sure we were united on Defense issues and protect Virginia's interest for Defense. I've talked to people on the Hill from other states, Virginia is considered the Gold Standard for this . However, it is used for other interest too. One of the other big things is taking care of our State Colleges and Universities. Consequently, Virginia and Virginia Tech work together and have for decades. Carla recently took a hit from some Hoos, when she said, Whit speaks for me. The truth of it is, they work things out together and approach it as one team. She didn't feel the need to add because she and Whit had already worked out their position. Believe me, when I say so many great things have come out of this for the state of Virginia, and we should thank our lucky stars...or really John Warner.

...practically mirror each other since what's good for UVA is also good for VT, and vice versa. We have far more in common between our universities than either has with universities outside of the commonwealth.

We are not texas with winning and losong between universities . Dr sands and rhe president of uva are tight as well as their deans as well. We collaborate together alot. While some silly fans augue and get energized and push each other button . The leadership does not do that. Keep telling the story

without any baggage. If anyone gets an invite, they will. UVA's prospects are no more certain than ours.

to go anywhere...particularly UVa. And I don't know why UVa would stay on a sinking ship just because UNC is on it. Not that I think there's any chance UNC wants to be the last one...no one would want that.

Maybe UVA and VT

And UVa and UNC have been in the same conference for 70 years, and have the oldest rivalry in the South among other academic similarities. I'm sure UVa would like to have all three together in the same conference. Just not sure that's a reality in this era.
