If this is still relevant, list of TV audiences for bowl games
All From Sports Media Watch. It's amazing that the overall non-CFP bowl viewership was up this year. Betting interest I suppose.
"Minnesota-Virginia Tech Duke’s Mayo Bowl averaged a 1.8 and 3.38 million viewers on ESPN — down from last year, when the game took place before New Year’s Day (West Virginia-North Carolina: 2.0, 3.84M)."

Answered quite a few questions Ive had. Notably, attendance will not be that important going forward.

In the future, they might be playing games in TV studios.
Or perhaps, they could play some bowl games in high school stadiums.

The Cure Bowl generated higher ratings than ESPN's average rating, and had a higher rating than the 10th ranked network, The CW, averaged.
The Potato Bowl beat every network's ratings except for ABC, Fox News, CBS, NBC, and Fox.
The K-State/Rutgers Cactus Bowl rating was only surpassed by ABC's ratings, and that was boosted by the Pop Tart Bowl, Pinstripe Bowl, and Alamo Bowl.

That a game kicking off at 10:30pm EST will get higher ratings than ESPN's average rating.
Plus, no event in Las Vegas is going to get a start before 7pm PST.

...an earlier time.
Guess that's based on actual data obtained this bowl season.

The Las Vegas Bowl had the tie in with the PAC12, so scheduling the game at 7:30 PST is a favor to the west coast cable companies so that they can maximize their ratings and revenue.

Also, For team like VT 6-6 coming in and a 7=5 minnesota, I think that is pretty good. Also, Its interesting during the christmas holiday, the ratings were strong (simply nothing else to watch).....
We hear the narrative that Bowls dont matter. For a pure content purpose its perfect for the networks, good solid ratings during a gap between basketball and football. We need to get off the win and lose and allow it to be what they are. scrimmages like spring game and serve as an end of year celebration.
