I don't disagree that seems to be where Hokie Ventures gets its value.
Will it always remain that way though? For example, VT has a large alumni base in NOVA, 757, and Richmond area. If Hokie Ventures decided to relocate the team to one of those locations within VA, then would those fans suddenly stop attending games just because the games are no longer played in Lane Stadium? Plus, if "big time college athletics" continues to inch closer to being more pro-like (even if it never technically ever becomes 100% pro league), then it is entirely possible Hokie Venture could develop fans in places most Hokie fans wouldn't think is possible.
For example, even though the DMV is pretty much Redskin/Commander territory, you will find a good percentage of Cowboys, Eagles, and Giants fans living in the area even if they have never lived closed to their favorite NFL team. The same thing could happen with Hokie Ventures or any of other similar entities if they decided to truly embrace being an "athletic club." Most people know FC Bayern Munchen as a professional German men's (and women's) football (socccer) club. What most people don't realize is the club also actively sponsors handball, chess, bowling, table tennis, and basketball teams. Also, it used to sponsor baseball, ice hockey, and gymnastics teams at one time, but has discontinued those programs for various reasons. In fact a lot, maybe even a majority, of these pro soccer teams, do sponsor other sports. A few of these pro clubs are even directly or indirectly owned by a university. The ones that are indirectly owned were originally apart of the university and then later spun off as an independent organization with the president of the university usually having a seat on the board.
