I agree, but i don't think
going to the past is the answer, as it's what got us into this mess.
After this all shakes out, and the BIG and SEC have most of the best football teams. maybe instead of waiting for them to break off and form their own league, the PAC, ACC, and other FBS programs scrap the existing conferences altogether, form a new association, and pool their resources to negotiate the mother of all media contracts.
Break off into 8 team "conferences" based on geography, have two OOC rivalries, and the last two OOC games are determined by a committee, matching the top schools that year with the other top schools creating really good matchups that any college football fan would watch. The top 6 conferences get auto's, so 4 playoff slots are guaranteed, and with the strength of schedule by matching two games every year, would create the SOS for a non conference winners to get some of those invites as well.
Do this scheduling for football, and a form of it for basketball. All other non revenue sports compete locally, except for a few games or matches each year.
Let the schools that make the postseason keep their money, give bonuses to teams that are in prime TV slots, reward teams with a tough SOS, and reward teams that fill a % of their stadiums. Otherwise, every team gets the same base amount of money.
Equal opportunity, but not equal outcomes. The schools that have/are invested/investing in their programs will be successful, and those that don't? ...
