For the P2 that will be like owning two playoff games. That gives them three huge games each championship game weekend. I can see why they want that. The play-ins also mitigate the situation when #4 is not very good, like Alabama last year. They get an boost in the polls if they win their play-in, and if not, some other "boosted" P2 team gets in instead. No risk of an obviously weak team getting in.
