I no longer support Va Tech because of the envigro dog scandal. How could a Vet school condone this activity. Thanks for commenting if you feel like it.

This was because I designed their first logo, wasn’t it?
True fact. The school was started when I worked at VT media services and I was picked to work with a committee of 10 or 12 to make a nice pretty. It was grueling work and I always feared it would come back to haunt me.

expecting perfection is a sure way to disappointment.
The Vet school saved my cat from certain agony and found a new cure for a dibilitating disease. I'll bet for every mistake they have made their are 10 stories of good. Now if they persistantly make the same mistake, that's a good reason.

I will forever be thankful to them for the 5 extra years with my labbie
He nearly died on the table when I first arrived and required surgery to remove a tumor from his pancreas. Not only did he receive great care but the staff of students and vets kept me informed with a call everyday while he recuperated. This was after multiple trips to our local vet and even a local specialist that were unable to diagnose him. He lived a full life to 15yo

Good service
I too had a good and a bad experience with the vet school treating my animals. The good experience was a 16 Year old weimarner that had a her back parlazed and they operated on her and got her back to walking. The other was with Weimarner that crawled into the waiting room and I was to late to do anything that day since they were closing. He died during the night. Honestly cannot blame them for his death. I had a 3 hour wait on Christiansburg mountain due to the expanding to 3 lanes wide up the mountain and detour you had to take up 460.

yes Five years ago. But as some of the posters say they do not know about this. Cystalcovehokie what is your feeling about this?

I think that VT should have had a stronger response once it learned….
of the circumstances. That said, it is really hard to say where the responsibility was for this issue. So in my view the people at the company should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. At VT, if there was a blind eye turned, there should have been penalties imposed, including firings if warranted. I’m an animal lover so I have no use for abusers. I don’t believe that the fact the victims may be dogs or cats makes it somehow ok. Thus I have no sympathy for Mike Vick and his punishment. On the other hand, I think eternal blacklisting of VT based on this episode is a bit much.

I'd like to know exactly was was VT's alleged "crime" in this circumstance?
Taking 10 dogs from that facility and testing out a new flea and tick preventive on them before finding them a "forever home" is one thing, taking 1000 dogs and cutting their eyeballs out while they were alive is another. As someone who has lived in the area for the past 30+ years and consumes print/internet and broadcast news every day, I find it hard to believe that there is any widespread systemic abuse going on. Nobody gets the word out like PETA....if there was something significant here they would be on campus protesting and mailing people fliers.

Thanks! Is there anything in that article that concerns you?
It sounds like the Vet School sourced animals from an accredited/licensed vendor, treated them well, and adopted them out. I have zero point zero issues with that. Should they have better vetted the source? Eh, maybe? But again, that's not their job. The facility WAS vetted by the appropriate authorities and apparently passed. How is that on VT? ** Edited by JoesterVT at 9/24/2025, 10:39:01 AM

It may not be…..
The abuse seems to be documented. I think that IF VT knew about that and ignored it, there is an issue. I’m not making a case that VT committed some crime. I’m saying “IF” in response to the OP’s question of what I think. I do think VT could have been a bit stronger in its statement.

If you know, tell me. If you don't know...exactly what are you upset about? How can you personally be so enraged about something you no ZERO details about? Why isn't PETA on campus right now? For the record, I have a close friend on the faculty in the AG department. The university has a panel that oversees all research involving animals. This panel is extremely tough to get any experimentation approved...to the point of frustration to the faculty. To paraphrase his words, the panel goes way beyond "animal welfare" and well into "animal rights" when making decisions about research proposals. In other words, (arguably) over the top on the side of the animals.

The Envigo dog scandal involves Envigo, a company breeding Beagles for research, which pleaded guilty in 2024 to violating the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA) by neglecting thousands of dogs at its Cumberland, Virginia breeding facility. The company faced a record $35 million fine, including criminal fines and payments to support animal welfare and environmental projects. Violations included unsanitary conditions, lack of veterinary care, wire flooring injuries, euthanizing dogs without anesthesia, and improper wastewater treatment contaminating local waterways. Envigo has since closed its facility and forfeited over 4,000 Beagles to the government. Virginia Tech was implicated in the scandal because it sourced dogs from Envigo for research purposes. The university has faced multiple violations of the Animal Welfare Act over several years, including incidents where animals suffered or died due to inadequate care. In 2024, Virginia Tech was fined for repeated failures to comply with animal welfare requirements. The university opposed legislation to restrict breeding and sales of research animals and has been criticized for lack of transparency in reporting animal use. Animal Rights groups have highlighted ongoing violations at Virginia Tech, including failures in veterinary care and poor animal transport conditions. These incidents are part of broader scrutiny on taxpayer-funded animal testing at Virginia Tech. In summary, the Envigo scandal centers on cruelty and neglect at a large dog breeding facility, with Virginia Tech implicated as a major purchaser of dogs from Envigo for its experiments, facing its own series of animal welfare issues and fines as a result

According to my DIL who is a vet in WI.....
......about every vet school in the country got their test and research beagles this way. BTW she has seen a lot of things in the vet industry/university research that are pretty heartbreaking.

teeth cleaning, that kind of thing.

I went to the VCU Dental Clinic from 1987 until the pandemic
Students cleaned my problem calculus coated teeth, filled cavities, installed crowns, and a performed a double root canal through a previously installed crown. By the time I was no longer contacted to be assigned, "my" first students were retiring. They needed live practice and I saved money. Licensed faculty oversaw the whole operation.

It is good that you got your problem teeth which started with your taking Calculus. I too was in trouble when I started the deriviations of math. A double root canal is unheard of now by a dentist. In my area they send you too a dentist who only does them there root salvation treatments. Yes the students at the vet school that I saw were genuinely interested in the animals they were treating. Hope you have a wonderful day.

a problem. I would hope that has been resolved, though.
